I think it started with frustrations about not loading the brushes up correctly, but then the sky and clouds came together. Then I messed up the mountains, but some trees made it look alright. Then I messed up mixing colors and got really bummed and kinda started that part over. Then I finished up with a few more plants and it made the whole thing come together in a super satisfying way. As a resident of Muncie, Indiana I just want to talk about Bob Ross’s house for a minute since I’ve drove past it a few dozen times. It’s a small house, but you can only see half of it. That’s because it’s surrounded by happy little trees. I love that you selected to keep the painting off the screen and your motivations for doing so. While us, the audience couldn't see the painting, we were able to see the emotion of what that painting means to you, which is, in my opinion, more important
Bob Ross purposely didnt want all the hoopla to be about him, which is why he did very few interviews. The majority of his time was spent doing painting workshops, filming the show and living a quiet life. It is a shame that the people who own his likeness (The Kowalski family, specifically Annette) refuse to allow his work to be sold or displayed (outside of a few pieces on loan to the Smithsonian), but they are following Bob's wishes. They have been interviewed several times, most recently for a NY Times piece in 2019, and have been steadfast is keeping Bob's personal life private.

I was really skeptical when you announced this video a while back. I've been watching NerdSync for years and have always found your deep dives equal parts interesting and informative. Having watched the whole thing, I can safely safe this is my favorite of all your videos, Scott. Your heart and soul is on complete display and shines through so strongly. Please keep taking swings like this. Your ability to dissect topics and grapple with complex ideas in an entertaining way is so much more than just comics and movies. Watching you grow as a writer and producer has been delightful and inspiring. Please keep it up
Bob Ross reruns on my local PBS affiliate has be keeping me sane EVERY DAY thru this pandemic. So I was a little worried about what I'd learn. But other than the hating the perm and the gravestone thing, I'd heard most of the facts already. So you DID NOT ruin Bob Ross for me, you only managed to highlight my existing dislike of capitalism, and for that, I thank you, and agree with your withholding of the reveal.
In the world of TH-cam where you HAVE to create a new video everyday to stay relevant, Scott releases 2 awesome well researched 30+min long videos a year and I just love it.
I've never seen an episode of The Joy of Painting before in my life. I've just barely heard of Bob Ross at all, and what little I do know mostly comes from an overabundance of merchandise and extremely nostalgic parents. But this video gave me an understanding and appreciation of Bob Ross I didn't expect. (I mean, to be fair, by this point I probably SHOULD have known that this video would make me care, considering that's what happens EVERY TIME a new Nerdsync video comes out, but oh well.) Scott, I know you put a lot of work into this video, and I think it REALLY paid off. I'm blown away. Great work, great message, and great insight.
Over an hour long? Christmas came early! You are one of the few channels that I’ll automatically know without watching that it’ll be quality content. I’m already setting aside some time to fully enjoy this video.
I’ve never been a fan of Bob Ross, but I am glad he brings so many people joy. Painting (either minis or portraits) always drove me up a wall with “antsiness” for some reason, I could never find the zen of it. Yet I’ll spend hours writing or creating code and be happy with it.
This video genuinely made me shed tears. Not just from Bob’s words but also yours at the very end. You enjoy that painting YOU created, Scott. Thank you for this video.
Hi Scott! Just read your latest community post. Right now, it hasn't hit 1000 comments, so... here I am! Been a fan since I watched the "Superman's New Power" video. I'll admit, it was very clickbaity. But if it weren't for that video, I wouldn't be subscribed to you for almost 5 years. Ever since then, I binge-watch all your Comic Misconceptions and pretty much everything else. And even though we're not getting as many videos as we wish, the love and passion you pour into these videos, comic book or not, is just incredible. Watching you feeling passionate about topics and subjects that you love is always fun and exciting to watch. I wouldn't mind waiting months for your next upload, because I know what you make will always be worth it. I just recently bought your shirts a few days ago. I wish I could buy more stuff, but my country's exchange rate is ridiculous. Still, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on my fist TH-cam merch. I will wear them with pride. Keep doing what you do, Scott. Your wonderful nerds aren't going anywhere.
Even though I’ve been watching this channel for years, I’m still blown away by the quality of work that is put into the videos. I was only ever mildly interested in Bob Ross but this video has me coming back over and over to replay certain sections. Great job as always Scott! Can’t wait to see what comes next
@@NerdSyncProductions I actually did watch the ASMR part twice! But mostly because it creeped out my boyfriend and we had a conversation about what he felt vs actually watching that section.
I got to say after binging all your stuff what made Bill Alexander so enjoyable to watch is similar to why you're so enjoyable to watch. Just the enthusiasm and joy you have covering topics and in your videos is very entertaining
This has been the best, most satisfying denial of a payoff I've ever seen a video pull off, because it resonates that well with the message of the video. Like, yeah it felt disappointing to not see the painting you were teasing since the start of the video... It felt disappointing for like, a second until it dawned on me the meaning of it. Very well done, Scott!!
Not gonna lie, I think this is your best video; the comedic timing was great and the internal narrative was well done (although I was excited to see the painting, ngl). This was really great!
I would like to say that as an art major who just recently took a oil painting all of the actual painting parts are so relatable. The confidence meter was so relatable to my final project process. I still often hold paint brushes in my mouth I refuse to learn my lesson. And I too have no idea how paint got on that shirt. Or the dog.
Thank you for this lovely video, Scott! I also am very happy to recognize Jessica, voicing one of the painters. As one of the peeps who can't support you on patreon, I'm happy to let all the ads run fully, now thinking of it as my way of showing my love, rather than something annoying that must be skipped. Happy new year Scott!
I was so sad when I moved to japan and realized no one here knows who he is... makes sense but still saddens me. Also I genuinely love these videos so thank you for brightening my day.
@@Niop_Tres I guess it’s been forgotten here because on Halloween I dressed up as him and everyone I talked to asked me who I was and had no idea who he is even after showing some of them videos. I guess at the very least he hasn’t retained popularity here
This was absolutely beautiful, genuinely. As a musician and arts type, sometimes it’s hard to remember that we’re doing this stuff because we love it. I love music, more than anything, I could never ever see myself not doing it.
I am so frustrated by this fact that you have such a great video on your channel with 500k+ subscribers and it's already been 5 days but the views are seriously low. I am really sad to see this. People really don't know what the real content is. You have a fresh hour worth of content on your channel for ending this year. It's really great. I am gonna watch it again sometime in Jan 1st week or maybe new year day itself. Bye Scott and hoping for a great year for you & your channel. Happy New year Pal! 🥰👍🤗
Here's the thing, "real artist" of the time called Norman Rockwell's oil paintings cheap and called Norman Rockwell a hack. But original Norman Rockwell oil paintings are in the Smithsonian and sell for over Two Million at auction when they're put up for sale.
Popularity creates marketability, it does not define quality. Rockwell was part of a machinery of industry that many artists are not. I'm not here to change your mind, I don't have strong feelings about Rockwell as an icon, one way or the other, but I do think we should think critically, and not confuse arguments. Take a step back from it for a second: Rockwell utilized methods that would be despised by predecessors and discarded by successors while overshadowing many, many equally, or arguably more talented contemporaries. Considering his fame and wealth I don't think the criticisms were unfair in his time, and it would probably be fair enough to take some of them to heart today.
@@futurestoryteller Nope, like a lot of art critics, there is always a level of jealousy and envy that drives opinions among contemporaries. And no one can deny, "Art is Subjective".
I'm not denying Norman Rockwell as a painter but Norman Rockwell is also known as an illustrator he Illustrated the Saturday evening post those covers were commissioned artwork
I'm not denying that Norman Rockwell was a painter I am just noting that he is also known as an illustrator all of the paintings that he did for the Saturday evening post were commissioned by the paper and there are several other commissions for his artwork to illustrate certain articles through his time on this Earth
Hey thank you Scott for making this video. I'm an emerging artist and I wanted to dip my toes into oil painting. I'm actually about to paint my very 1st oil painting when I'm done with this comment. I was thinking of posting my oil paintings on my platform, but this video is making me rethink that. I wanted to make oil paintings for the sake of making them and not for content. You not showing your painting at the end was a powerful message and it has affected me. Thank you Scott all the content you have made over the years, but this video was the one that hit me the most and I just wanted to let you you know that you inspire tiny content creators like me to create for myself and my community. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
This is one of your best works! That you managed to tie together a full story about a man whose estate has done everything to obfuscate his past his a credit to your effort and research skills. I’m honored to call you a friend.
The passion you put into this video is so evident it just pours through the screen. It makes me so happy to see people doing things they truly love even when others might say it’s not the most prudent thing. I hope you continue to do so I’ll watch every step of it!
As a person with anxiety myself I fully understand why you kept your painting to just you and your family. To submit something you made to the world of criticism, I know you are no expert in painting, possibly better than myself. I would like to share a bit a knowledge I like to share, critics have pointed out the flaws of Michelangelo's David, but Michelangelo saw David in that marble and chiseled away one of the most famous statues. Please share your painting with people you know love you for you. People who knew you during the research phase, and paint buying phase, to your editing phase. Enjoy your painting and it's future siblings.
No, it's not weird, a lot of people are made vicerally uncomfortable by mouth sounds, personal attention, whispering etc. While I personally do experience ASMR and enjoy it i can understand why one wouldn't.
You, kind Sir, are awesome. You’re so respectful, even when you are still left with questions. I love how you have realized that you have the ability to both explore and pay tribute to the “greats-of-olden-time.” It’s so empowering to make something just for yourself. On a personal level: the things you make yourself are masterpieces. Be that videos, posts, or paintings. They are genuine, and no one can say otherwise. As your audience, it’s a wonderful thing to walk through your thoughts alongside you. We don’t have to see every little thing. Just watching you find a little happiness with the results of your hard work - THAT is good enough for me.
this man is a legend, i love this man. you're the second-best scott and the best scott has "the Woz" at the end of his name so that' s high praise. thank you for your content scott :)
Your closing point is something that means a lot to me. I'm an Outdoor Instructor with a fairly wide range of qualifications from Canoeing to Rock Climbing but there are some activities that I've intentionally chosen not to become a guide in because I want it to stay my amateur hobby and I don't want to turn it into a job.
I took several days to get around to watching it, and had to do it in a couple sittings, but it's still a great experience. Also sometimes 'not having the attention span to' is hard to distinguish from 'is unusually deeply affected by', so that might be part of it as well. Even if not, whatever gets you through it, this stuff is at least worth putting the effort in however we can.
This video has a lot of effort and love put into it and I just want to thank you for bringing us this during these trying times. Forget the metrics, forget the negativity. You are awesome Scott! Never forget that. And I hope that just like Bob Ross your work lives on forever.
*Fun Fact:* Whenever I board a plane and see they have movies, the first thing I do is see if they have Bob Ross. If not, I usually can't find anything else decent to watch.
I hope you're fulfilled and continue to be going forward. I don't really know what to say, but I hear boosting engagement is good so here's my poor man's support
bruh, your niche vids are what made me find you and stick around. I tend to scroll past those generic clickbaity "is comic book character xyz?????" thumbnails with only a six minute runtime. but show me a thumbnail about Cap punching nazis with an hour long runtime or an analysis of Hamilton with a twenty minute runtime and I am THERE, BABY!
I'm at a loss for words to express how beautiful this episode is, so I'll do my best. I slowly became invested in the man who was Bob Ross and I ended up embarking on an emotional journey by the end of it. This episode of NerdSync has been by far the most impactful one for me because of how honest and genuine it all felt. This episode was simply amazing! Hats off to you Scott for creating this masterpiece!
Hi, coming back after seeing the tweet to say this video is good as hell and somehow more than lived up to the substantial hype. I don’t know why I didn’t try your videos earlier but over the past few months I’ve learned that was an absolute tragedy. Keep on keepin on, man :)
Patton Oswalt's stand-up material regarding the duo of Bob Ross and William Alexander, specifically the oceanic divide between their respective vibes, never fails to crack me up. His impression of Alexander as he raved like a mad prophet shouting "I WIELD THE WAND OF ODIN!" is hysterical.
I’m 34 years old and was somehow miraculously blessed with meeting him not once but 3x as a young child. He made an appearance at a local art supply store where he talked with me and signed my book which is one of my most prized possessions. Then I got to see him do 2 demos at the local cable station my aunt worked at and pulled some strings to get me a floor seat... among my fondest memories!!!
Anyone else get heavy-lidded during the ASMR portion? Great job on this, Nerdsync! It’s informative, inspirational, and down right motivating. I wanna go paint some happy accidents, now.
Came here because of Quinton Reviews! Great video, Bob Ross was someone I had never looked into the history of and after watching the whole vid...I have very complicated feelings about him and his business. I like that you tried to leave nuance in the ending, that you didn't 100% condemn anyone with the limited info you had but tried to present what you had found and how you felt about it.
This is so cool. I loved to watch Bob Ross more than 25 years ago. And I usually did this: come home from school, put on the show, get comfy in my dad’s recliner and doze off while watching him paint. It was so soothing.
Thank you Scott.... I've always been a big fan of Bob Ross... And you too !!!! It's been a real crappy year...And I havn't forgotten a promise I made to you some time ago, about supporting the channel... You'll be hearing from me soon. Keep up the good work - Gernard Howell
Gosh darn it, why do you always have to make me cry? Thank you for not sharing your painting. I hope it really brings you joy, and even more I hope it's something that gives you some space outside of your public life. My great uncle paints, and has his paintings made into Christmas cards that he shares with his family. It's my favourite card to get every year. If you decide you want to share your paintings, maybe do it just with your family? It could end up being deeply meaningful to one of them.

Glad that I didn't actually ruin Bob Ross the man, just Bob Ross the corporate brand haha
Have been told to comment. Blood for the blood Good, comments for the algorithm God!
Bless you 🙏
"I've only been oil painting for 10 minutes, but according to my expert level knowledge on how it works--" Me too. Me too.
You're the best buddy. Awesome job making this!
Thanks, man! I appreciate it!
"Unless 2020 is hiding an extra four months"
Does that mean we can expect the next video in 4 months?
In the world of TH-cam where you HAVE to create a new video everyday to stay relevant, Scott releases 2 awesome well researched 30+min long videos a year and I just love it.
Scott, this video really hit the spot. I got teary eyed at the end, and felt a palpable sense of dread for that poor, white, button down.
And god came down and said “and may nerdsync post again”
Over an hour long? Christmas came early! You are one of the few channels that I’ll automatically know without watching that it’ll be quality content. I’m already setting aside some time to fully enjoy this video.
Scott: 4:15- Maybe get your paints out!
Me: turning this on while painting my Christmas gifts: *shocked Pikachu *
I’ve never been a fan of Bob Ross, but I am glad he brings so many people joy. Painting (either minis or portraits) always drove me up a wall with “antsiness” for some reason, I could never find the zen of it. Yet I’ll spend hours writing or creating code and be happy with it.
31:39 OH MY GOD I thought you meant "I havent [kicked a dog around] yet, I should try that"
"Just beat the devil out of it."
🤣🤣🤣
I'm really happy you didn't show us the painting, it wrapped up the message of the video perfectly
fun fact: Willian Alexander was the basis of Patton Oswald's performance when playing the character Professor Dementor in Kim Possible
This video genuinely made me shed tears. Not just from Bob’s words but also yours at the very end. You enjoy that painting YOU created, Scott. Thank you for this video.
Out of all the things I've seen this year you not showing the painting is easily my favorite ending
I’ve always seen our generation as having only five truly wholesome legends:
Mr. Rogers
Steve Irwin
Jim Henson
Stan Lee
Bob Ross
I agree with everyone on this list.
I posit that you add Weird Al
@@nickolasanderson5044 i agree Wierd Al is also a great human being.
What I'm getting out of this is that you know absolutely nothing about Stan Lee whatsoever
@@einootspork Yeah, I'm sure Kirby and Ditko are probably like _"Bruh...."_
Everytime I watch another NerdSync video Scott crushes my expectations you keep out doing yourself HOW!?
I'm so interested in what sections you watched twice! I can almost guarantee it's not the ASMR bit, haha. That part has proven to be polarizing.
@@NerdSyncProductions I actually did watch the ASMR part twice! But mostly because it creeped out my boyfriend and we had a conversation about what he felt vs actually watching that section.
1:03:41 I love the implication here that even in death he still keeps changing his logo every 3 years.
The one dislike is from Bob Ross Inc.
I got to say after binging all your stuff what made Bill Alexander so enjoyable to watch is similar to why you're so enjoyable to watch. Just the enthusiasm and joy you have covering topics and in your videos is very entertaining
Well done (as always), Scott!
Hey, thank you!!!
We could all use a little more Scott in our lives.
This video rocks Scott. I know you decided to not make videos like these next year, but I'm really proud of you for making this one.
Scott, that ending with the painting reveal had me in sudden and unexpected tears. Thank you! Amazing video as always! Much love! ♥️
Not gonna lie, I think this is your best video; the comedic timing was great and the internal narrative was well done (although I was excited to see the painting, ngl). This was really great!
when he said "i should try that" i thought he meant kicking puppies at first
I would like to say that as an art major who just recently took a oil painting all of the actual painting parts are so relatable. The confidence meter was so relatable to my final project process. I still often hold paint brushes in my mouth I refuse to learn my lesson. And I too have no idea how paint got on that shirt. Or the dog.
I've just realized that the first time I watched this, I fell sleep when the ASMR part started. Thanks, I needed a good sleep.
Glad you enjoyed it! Jessica is a delight! And thanks for sitting through the ads!
No problem! I acually wished to get those long ads, so I could do some subtitling (a project of mine) meanwhile😅
I share in your frustration but I'm glad you at least liked it, Priyanshu!
@@NerdSyncProductions thanks Scott😍👌!
Literally thought to myself that Bob Ross had a very ASMR feeling. Cool to see you mention it ✨
Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Norman Osborn - wait hold up, I haven't heard anything bout that in my art history courses.
Scott, this isn't a video. This is a documentary manifesto. 👏👏👏
@@myrtlebeachairbrush Norman Rockwell wasn't an (illustrator), he was a painter. His medium was an oil medium.
I've been waiting for this for ages
This is one of your best works! That you managed to tie together a full story about a man whose estate has done everything to obfuscate his past his a credit to your effort and research skills. I’m honored to call you a friend.
Thank you so much, man! Bob Ross the man seems nice, but Bob Ross the brand is a little much for me haha
Cheers bud. I've been trying to find a Surf Shark code. Really happy it's on your vid so you get a couple of £ for it.
Your thoughts on this don't really coincide with his reasoning.
That was a truely moving feel good video,I think you really got something from Ross
is it weird that i ind asmr profoundly uncomfortable? like it literally has the exact polar opposite effect on me.
No, it's not weird, a lot of people are made vicerally uncomfortable by mouth sounds, personal attention, whispering etc. While I personally do experience ASMR and enjoy it i can understand why one wouldn't.
It sets my teeth on edge. It's like my brain is itchy.
I hacked Scott the Woz so I could become the best Scott once and for all
Your closing point is something that means a lot to me. I'm an Outdoor Instructor with a fairly wide range of qualifications from Canoeing to Rock Climbing but there are some activities that I've intentionally chosen not to become a guide in because I want it to stay my amateur hobby and I don't want to turn it into a job.
I feel bad it takes me so long to get through these videos, but I don’t have the attention span to watch an over one hour video in one sitting.
You know, I think I love the fact that there's a Bob Barker video that's over an hour long.
What a lovely way to round off the year, thank you Scott.
Wait is that mr heeeey brother himself
bruh, your niche vids are what made me find you and stick around.
Scott Niswander is a wholesome man who discusses topics that are both non-wholesome and wholesome at one time! Thank you.
Thank you so much, Mahad!
This episode made me cry, bro. I grew up with Bob Ross.
The care & quality you put into your videos is recognized & appreciated.
Anyone else get heavy-lidded during the ASMR portion?
Great job on this, Nerdsync! It’s informative, inspirational, and down right motivating. I wanna go paint some happy accidents, now.
Most of the comments about the ASMR portion are about how they hated it so I'm glad you at least liked it haha
This the best biography of Bob Ross I have ever seen and it so unique
I just wanna let you know, this video is great and you're undervalued. Hope it explodes on reddit one day for you. You do great work.
