  • “We have an obligation to expose our history to everybody, especially to kids,” says Valeria Howard-Cunningham, president of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo. In an interview with The Emancipator, she shared the impact the rodeo has had on her life and the lives of everyone it has touched.
The Bill Pickett rodeo was started by Howard-Cunningham’s late husband, Lu Vason. “He realized he didn’t see anybody that looked like him in the rodeo, and he wanted to know why,” Howard-Cunningham said. “At that time, like everything else in this country, Blacks were not given the opportunity.”
Thanks to the rodeo, generations of children have been able to embrace their heritage as proud Black cowboys and cowgirls.
