  • “The American Revolution was not revolutionary.” Since the colonial rebellion maintained the same slavery, wealth inequity, and power of White elites it had under Britain, was it just another war?

It was an incredible and genius revolution that led to revolutions, democracies, and republics the world over. At the time of the US revolution, nearly every government on earth was a monarchy. After it and today, the opposite is true, nearly every government is a Republic/democracy. As Tocqueville said at the time, America had adopted the government of the future, and nations the world over would be following suit. And they did.

Your dialogue is not intellectually honest, aggressively dumbed down, and geared toward a young and naive audience that grew up on TH-cam. If you don't think the American Revolution was a revolution, then you don't understand monarchy and the British Empire. For more clarity regarding chattel slavery, see all peoples and cultures in the history of the world. Since you like the 1700s, start with the continent of Africa. You can learn a lot about slavery, including modern-day slavery, there. Fortunately for you, you live in the U.S. You are right regarding the Civil War. All civil wars are nation-altering, including the ones taking place today. That being said, civil wars don't begin a narrative, they add to it. For the record, Haiti is a failed state that can only reasonably be described as trash. No offense to individual Haitians, some of whom I personally know and like. Fortunately for them, they were smart enough to get to the U.S. as fast as they could when they had the chance. Happy Independence Day, all!...💯

you wanna talk about intellectual dishonesty but say haiti is a failed state all by itself and not directly orchestrated by the states. and also slavery in africa is directly due to western imperialism.

@@elisapetafiaola2318 And is Haiti not a failed state? A country ruled by gangs, barely able to form a government, and nearly 60% of the population below the poverty line, according to UNICEF. Haiti, by all measures, is a failed state, and the fault is entirely their own. And I hope you realize that slavery was not some EVIL Western invention, but rather a system that has existed in all parts of the world for centuries.

    This is amazing.
She actually says "revolutions by definition must include complete structural change for the benefit of everyone particularly those most in need"
And then they include a definition of "revolution" that says nothing of the sort. that is cognitive dissonance right there

Then she lists Haiti as a perfect revolution, but then goes to list the American Emancipation proclamation and 13th,14th, and 15th amendments to the United States of America's constitution. Currently in the US we are in a place to have these conversations, whilst Haiti burns to the ground.

Yeah, no, putting aside the fact that revolution and rebellion are often optics terms determined by who wins, the American Revolution did achieve major social change in creating a representative government that wasn't answerable to England. That it was not perfectly equitable is irrelevant. No society is perfect and by that standard there have been no revolutions since every revolution has had oversights and oppressions and the two other major revolutions often covered in textbooks: French and Communist, had astronomical levels of oppression attached to them.

we are so tired of hearing the myth of American exceptionalism. you cannot just look at the evolution of humanity and technology and give America all the credit. just like we cant give all the credit to china and I doubt you'd give any credit to the USSR. and on peace- how the fuck can you thank America for that? the military industrial complex has basically been the root of all conflicts for at least the past century and don't just take my word for that, decorated war hero Major General Smedley D. Butler who served in 5 wars for America including both world wars wrote the book "war is a racket" in 1935 after serving for his final time, this time instead of in the ground, he was in a military warehouse where he realized just how much money was wasted for war materials over purchasing. basically weapons companies lobby politicians to create wars so they can sell more weapons. not to mention the neocolonialism and imperialism of invading, couping and intervening in other countries particularly in the middle east, south America and Africa, corrupting their governments to steal their resources. so no the world is definitely far worse off thanks to the existence of America.

This is naive Fukuyamianism at best and a dangerous simplification of misunderstood history at worst.
While there is certainly no disagreement, that the American Revolution did not make the lives of BIPoC or women (or for Catholics, Jews,... ect.) in the new US better, it misses the point to discount it's ideas as a revolutionary concept.
There were many achievements made, that improved the lives of those groups, the revolution was by and for. As it is for all revolutions, the group that has the power to carry out that revolution will make the new order if successful, and that they had their prejudices and flaws of their own does not make it less of a revolution.
The danger is thinking 'Revolution' is some kind of omi-benevoltent force, that brings humanity ever forward. We can see many examples in history, in which a revolution made lives worse for all but a select few or that eats their own ideals in the end - think the English Civil War, the French Revolution, the Russian one, or even the failed Revolution of 1848 - probably after the french one, the second most significant revolution for our modern world - that (in a roundabout way) strengthened the middle class to a never seen degree, but arguably laid the foundations for the middle class/working class conflict for the late 19th and early 20th century.

This video is wrong. The American Revolution chamged life in the US for all people. Often completely overlooked are the free Blacks and enslaved Whites. The revolution greatly improved and empowered all free people, including Blacks, and began the long work towards the complete end to slavery for all (which really doesnt end until the end of coal mine towns).
Until the rise of the Democrat Party Blacks had all of the rights as Whites. There was little discrimination. Slavery became less and less with restrictions on slave trading and the US would end it faster than many other slave economy countries (and much faster than Africa and the Middle East).

    • @catherga
      @catherga 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

This is a wild take. The Revolution definitely changed the fabric of society in the US but the impact on the overall black population was negative. The Constitution written right after the Revolution explicitly protected the Transatlantic slave and rewarded slave holding states with more political power for each slave they had in their territory.
By the 1860’s, out of 4.5 million black people, only 500,000 were free. That means only 11% of black people had access to the rights of citizenship before the Civil War.
