Great video. One tip is to use a spread plate on the inside of the door, since it is a single wall attachment. Washer and bolts can be moved with pry bar. Spread plate makes it extremely difficult.
Great idea - Do you buy a spread plate at the hardware store or just take a solid plate the size of the front hasp plate and drill the 3 holes? Thank you kindly.
Pretty sad when you have to put a lock like this on your work van. I am getting ready to put this type of lock on my shed today. As they say locks only keep the honest out!
Watched a guy here in New York install these just like you did. In less than 10 minutes he got robbed. Lost everything he had. He installed the same lock setup on his other van with a backing plate and installed higher. Dented the hell out of the steel, but they couldn't get in because he installed it higher.
I wish I took a picture of his door when it was dented all to hell. Even the owner thought it was funny. If idiots really want to get in, they will somehow :(
Nice video and good info about the locks. I agree that a backplate would make them much more difficult to pry off, but short of that some big fender washers would provide some additional security.
On Amazon you can get a set of 3 and 4 keyed alike. Which I would have installed theses before my van got broken into last night and ALL my tools were stolen.
Those are general deterrent locks to most thieves who when seeing them will move on to the next target , but you should use some 1/4" plate steel behind the panel to make them really secure as i have seen those locks attacked with a jemmy bar and the bolts just pull through the van skin very easy
I like those but I hate the fact that you have to drill into the body. It ends up leaving a rust stains all down the side of the van. I just installed the puck style locks that use the existing door hardware. I don’t think they’re as secure as what you have but I like the fact that you don’t have to put any holes in the vehicle and you can remove it and put it back to factory
good video thanks, but in my opinion three things are missing 1- a rubber, urethane or water resistant gasket between the door and the lock to avoid water and moisture. 2- Paint the holes with anti-mold paint (steel fence paint) 3- a metal plate (making a counter plate) inside the door using the broken bite. bigger better for greater resistance. if the lever the lock tears easily and also has a rubber gasket inside the door *-cut the excess screw. Optional
nice video Greg, just past my contractors test, thank the lord! Just waiting for the license. really enjoy your videos and how you do buisness. May start a channel for oklahoma.
4:15 Hi. Thanks for the video it given me all the answers i needed. However i believe if you put a back plate with matching holes, will make it more rigid and stong. I would do back plates to both doors. But thanks for the vid,
Most insurance will not consider master lock as a secondary security item (like other locks or alarm). Master lock has had a design flaw for about 20 years that allows you to open their locks with a nail, paperclip, zip tie, toochpick, etc in less than 10 seconds. No nedd to pick them when they have a bypass built in. They also moved to cast zinc that can be defeated with a simple plumbers torch. Master lock has tried to sue many people for showing this but never won. Insurance got wise to why so many were being defeated and under writing started excluding them.
@@onlineshopper2510 I would recommend watching a few videos on puck or storage locks by "the lock picking lawyer". Some very competitively priced units out there.
Thanks for sharing . Good point : doing one side first then lining up and marking the remaining 3 holes. I was about to drill them all on my wooden lock-up doors but your way is more sensible!:) Thanks for that!
Thank you for a great video. I did not come here to tell you some ridiculously made up negative story. Just want to say thanks for making the video. I found it helpful.
that lock takes less than 30 seconds to pick, but most thieves can't pick. Also, don't compare master locks to just any lock. They are that number one practice lock for newbie lock pickers. the plates are great, the lock sucks!
I wish I could upload pictures to show how easy it is to pry that thing out, it just happened to me and it sucks, maybe if you put a bigge plate on the back to reinforce it.
You can just put it on the inside cause it will be protected so no one unlocks it but if its inside it would be hard to open back up if its inside so do what you want
nice locks, I guess u need them there in cali, most of a time I don't even lock my van where I leave lol, the lawns looks very green, do people own lawn mowers there?
There is a locksmith tool you can buy for around $125.00. It looks like a steering wheel puller. Just hook it on your club, turn the handles and it pops your club in half in under a minute. Doesn't even touch your steering wheel.
Steel plate on the back of those carriage bolts would make it way stronger against crowbar attacks. They would have a bad time trying to pry them bolts through those thin sheet metal walls on that van.
Noticed that @ 7:15 it doesn't look spot on in line with each other, how much leeway is there and would it be possible to drill the holes while both clasps are locked together also I noticed you have left a slight gap between the two clasps how much gap do you recommend and is there a large tolerance. Thanks for posting I am going to get two of these as I like hiking and often leave the campervan unattended for long periods so this will giver me a bit of peace of mind.
Of course the best defense against thieves is a justifiably rigger happy armed guard. Next is a really good vehicle burglar alarm with radar motion detection and owner notification.
Those are good locks. So what were some of the main reasons that you trader your service truck for a van and are you happy with your decision so far?👍😎
HVAC/R Junky yes very happy with the new van. I got it because it was getting hard to do installs out of the back of a pickup. that is the main reason. the other reason is because I had had stuff fly out of the back of the truck three times. big stuff! once was a dolly! once was a roll of bubble wrap. which seriously puts a wrench in your heart when you see it flying out of the truck. no more! the other reason is the rain soaking everything in the back.
A full-size van is the way to go, I started last year in a crew-cab 3/4 with a work bed, glad to be in the van now. Everything stays dry and secure - my boss got mine used - fortunately already had the puck locks on it.

@@bct321 best I can explain is that you might have to use a piece of cardboard as a template. Then you trace it on to stainless steel wire mesh. You might need an angle grinder to cut the mesh. You can't" just pick any lock " that's a myth. You'd have to cut a hole in the van to gain access those locks are pretty decent.it would of been better to put them higher to prevent peeling of the door.
i went to buy these for my Van. some boxes had the same key code, meaning they would open each other..is that right? or have you paid attention to that?
Why isn't there a template you can download and simply print to check the layout of the holes? All van doors widen in a slope away from the lip of the door. This clearly appears visually to be right where the bolts need to go. I don't want to blindly buy this without knowing how I can make the bolts fit... Even a well taken direct on photo could let someone scale it to the right length to get some idea, but it seems like an obvious thing to have a .PDF to download and print a template... MasterLock? Buehler?
Can i just not order one of these from ebay and use the key that came with my lock to open your van? So in theory a thief would just need to have 1 key for all locks right?

Useful video, thnx! One tip to prefent rust or such damage; put a little bit of silicone kit around the hole before u thighten up the bolts.
That’s exactly what I was thinking while watching the video.
Another tip: put duct tape on the back of the plate before you permanently mount it. This helps with less rusting behind the plate.
