Over his career Bill Mahr has said many things that bug me ,many things I've agreed with, and a few things that made me laugh. People aren't just one idea or one moment in time. Cancelling is moronic and censorship (barring a very, very few examples ) takes us that many more steps towards tyranny.
Not generally a fan of Maher, but I remember thinking back in '01, "They're cancelling this guy's show for expressing an uncomfortable opinion?"
Yup… The Bush years. Remember back when if you ever suggested you’re against the Iraq war they all called you “unamerican” and “siding with terrorists”.
So it’s exactly like it is now except that the untouchable subject is different. 😕

I would say the Smother's brothers were the first to get cancelled because of their political satire.
They were awesome. I caught the tail end of their act but I remember, as a child I enjoyed them.

True Howie Mandel story: around 1985? I was homeless in LA, hanging around UCLA campus alot during the day. One night I sneak into a building, fall asleep under a covered folding table, most likely in a Xanax stupor. I awake to deafening roar and hand clapping....it was a Howie Mandel show, I'd never heard of him, he was so funny. I recall him doing crowd work, he asked some dude what he did for a living, the guy replied "nothing", so Howie asks him, "then how do you know when you're done?"
I’m don’t agree with Mr. Maher and a lot of things but I think he has the same right to talk crap as anyone else. If I don’t like it I just personally won’t watch. Also Ann Coulter said she sat next to him on a plane and said he was really nice. That scores high marks in regards to the complete political dichotomy between the two. I respect Mr. Maher.
She's been on his show a bunch. Both politically incorrect and his show on hbo. They are actually very good friends

I watched PI on Sept 10 2001, then as I did every night, I put my VHS of Simpsons episodes on and went to sleep. My VCR, once the tape hit the end, would rewind and eject, so it did that and started playing ABC. I was awoken by the TV and looked at the news coverage that was now everywhere, planes were hijacked. That's how I learned about 9/11. Also that day, around, I'd say 11:30 at night, it slowly dawned on me that Letterman probably wasn't going to be on...
Wonder if Howie's daughter knows what a hard day's work is like. Must be nice.

Loved Politically Incorrect when it was on and got so excited when Bill went to HBO. Every episode is great.
I disagree with Maher on some things, but lets face it, he has been screaming about the system since I can remember, long before me or the people at like CNN or MSNBC were screaming.

I've often disagreed with Bill Maher, and he still makes sure to get his digs in on "the Right" on his show, but I'm from the "I disagree with what you say but I'll defend your right to say it" debate club.
It was so ironic that a show expressly named "Politically Incorrect" could be canceled for being... politically incorrect!
This is often our issue today, attacking & cancelling someone that takes a differing stance, it makes me crazy. You can turn the channel in disagreement but silencing them goes against everything we stand for.

Yeah, Charlie Chaplin, Lenny Bruce, The Smothers Brothers and, later, Dennis Miller. But Bill's comment about our military is what led to his cancellation. Not his agreeing with Dinesh Souza.

Maher is still being dishonest about what he said that got PI cancelled. Dinesh said that the terrorists weren’t cowards. Maher agreed and then added that our soldiers WERE cowards in comparison.
Dinesh didn’t say that. That was all Maher, and THAT is why his show was cancelled.
Now you're the one being a little dishonest. Yes Bill did continue on from Dinesh's point but he said it's cowardly to fire missiles from thousands of miles away. At no point did he say soldiers. Even he would know you don't denigrate the soldiers.

Important to note, I’ve only seen clips of BM, never liked the guy, never watched the show, never listened to his take on the news, or his “comedy”.
I don’t get this “canceled” BS.

2. If anyone says/does things we absolutely find deplorable, are we supposed to just keep watching/listening?
Bringing something to the attention of others is exactly what BM does when someone does/says something he find offensive/bad/wrong, but it’s not okay when someone else does?
I’m a Berner, through and through, dyed in the wool, since 1984. Trump is evil, beyond words. I’m not a right winger, I’m not a bot. I’m so far-left I’m even left-handed. BM is a centerist, if not a long mile far-right of center, so I don’t listen to him, because I find everything he says… off my center;
However, if I had been a follower, and found him saying things I disagreed with, I’d stop listening, as anyone should.
In my research I’m finding that a lot of the “popularity” some of these controversial people have isn’t actually fans, but people who disagree and follow to grab the worst clips to show others the true colors they are seeing.
Their “followers” list is full of haters following. As example, do you think everyone who followed trump on social media loved him?

Was he really canceled by the mob? "The show went on for another 9 mths." I love Bill Maher but I feel like he is slowly evolving into Rogan's move to the right. Lately he has been repeating talking points that are birthed from Fox. Usually, one at a time and lazily doesn't give any pushback or determine that they are not true. In another clip from Howie he is discussing CRT without ever saying CRT and has no idea he is puking out the same points that Rufo used to redefine CRT. I still enjoy most of what he says. But find it odd he can be so insightful and then spin White Privilege into something else and then contradicting himself at the same time. White privilege is basically "ability to talk about racism without ever experiencin it". To mention white guilt and say I probably got a gig over a black comedian because I was white really insults the whole Graduate level program taught in law school. He dumbs it down so far it is like saying the drummer for Rush "kept the band in time" or "the cell phone is an improvement to the cordless phone."
I love it when people get mad just because one of their sides political commentators stops being hyper-partisan and starts pushing back on their wacky BS ideas.

Maher’s opinions are on tape going back 20+ years. His positions have been very consistent. It’s the left thats shifted. CRT is a great example. 20 years ago the only people that cared about “critical theory” were the neck beards in liberal arts departments that were too scared to say “marxist”. Now mainstream libs act like it should be taken seriously, despite it’s obvious deficiencies. Don’t even get me started on this fanciful language around “privilege” it’s just a linguistic trick to shift the blame from the perpetrators of racism to an entire demographic group - a trick of pure racism which sits well with concepts like “the curse of ham”. Lazy, dishonest and obviously contradictory thinking.
