59 police officers were killed in the line of duty from January 2021 through September 2021.
This includes two special agents from the FBI’s Miami Field Office.
Of the 60,105 officers who were assaulted in 2020, 18,568 (30.9%) sustained injuries.
44,421 officers were assaulted with personal weapons (e.g., hands, fists, or feet); 25.8% of these officers were injured.
2,744 officers were assaulted with firearms; 6.1% of these officers were injured.
1,180 officers were assaulted with knives or other cutting instruments; 9.7% of these officers were injured.
The remaining 11,760 officers were assaulted with other types of dangerous weapons; 16.8% of these officers were injured.

As a black man from who lives in a 80% white community. I never once have even worried about police harming me or even thought about having any disadvantages compared to anybody else.

I was a college professor that served on many hiring committees - the last thing you would want to be as an applicant is to be a white male applicant. So much for privilege. Race and gender also played a role in grading. No professor wants to risk being called racist so they over compensate by making sure no minority will have reason to complain. The word “privilege” is associated with being born with a silver spoon in your mouth and being a legacy applicant to Ivy League schools and things like that.
Advantage is a much broader term, and at the same time is also specific.
Privilege suggests you are part of an elite class.
Agreed. Note that specific instances spelled out by Bill could also be applied to other races. Advantage is a much better term, because it speaks to a specific situation. All races and types of people have certain advantages and disadvantages. Some they are born with, others are given to them by the state. Calling this a generic privilege for a specific race really makes the situation worse.

@@TheBluCannon semantics are important when you’re talking about two words with very different connotations. It may not be important for strictly academic purposes but if ‘white privilege’ would be better accepted as ‘white advantage’ it’s an important discussion. I personally have always found ‘white privilege’ to be a bit of an uncomfortable term, not because I don’t understand what it’s trying to get at but because it doesn’t quite convey the point appropriately, as bill outlined quite well.
Whatever you call it, is of course, in the ambit of the majority. The majority has the total authority to define the minority, including what we're called and how that name identifies us. Think of why Irish-Americans are just White and Mexican-Americans are called Hispanic, Latinos - we don't decide on these names for a reason.. They ensure our distinction, otherness if you will from the ruling majority. We cant just be what we collectively decide to call ourselves. The US Census, linguistics do that for us. Um, we never had a Zoom call to vote on it, lol. In any case, Bill Maher makes some good points about his life in the 80s as a comic - but I surmise, his career trajectory didn't include overt discrimination based on race - if so, there would be a lawsuit, right? Bottom line as he sits now, a white male billionaire, life is pretty damn good. He prefers black women, but I dare say, he can get whomever he wants. It's a matter of money and affluence now. It's an undisputed fact, race and ethnicity are inherently tied to class and well, poverty.
Another minor point, one tactic employed by the majority with respect to their own personal experiences of societal "disadvantage" is to point to a single incident when a minority seemed to get an apparent, unfair advantage. For example, in law school in Seattle, the overwhelmingly white students would point out the Latino Microsoft millionaire's daughter who got into the law school, apparently based solely on her ethnicity. How they surmised that, I'm not sure. But I do know that a millionaire anything by default has a charmed life. And of course, all of the white students got in solely on merit - even if there Dad is a Superior Court Judge, Grandpa is a founding partner at a major law firm. Whether you believe or not in collective guilt, surely, collective benefit is a nice perk. It's interesting how Bill Maher seems less forthright on calling out illogical disparities in this case, as he did so fervently with religion in his documentary. His hesitance comes perhaps, because in the latter, it hits a personal nerve as white male. I believe he was raised Catholic, but is non-practicing. Easier to joke about something that exists outside yourself. I think he's smart, funny at times. But if I were a black chick - I'm a Latino gay man - watch out. Lol.
I'm white and back in the 70's my parents had "the talk" with me about being pulled over by the police. According to these people, I guess I was the exception.

You know something Social cover, it appears you guys want other groups to have a thick skin when certain comments are directed at them. However, When the comments are directed at guys like yourself, you get highly offended. Example, Hillary Clinton called "half of Trump voters "deplor%%%%%". Obama made a comment that certain conservative voters "cling to guns and religion" when they don't understand certain occurrences. Both statements were completely true. I find PC attitudes and 'wokeness' usually ridiculous. However, with that said, I have a sneaking suspicion that a whole lot of people that spend tons of time *harping* on those two things do it because it gives *their* regressive political and social views *cover*. Yeah, there.... I said it. That they've created a two headed bogeyman (PC'ness and wokeness) to rail against that gives *them* cover to turn the clock back 30 years. A lot of these folks might have been anti-civil rights movement back in the '60's if they were there. I'd never claim there hasn't been some unfair treatment of blacks, but if you weren't a Mayflower descendant just about everybody's dealt with something. The reality is most from anywhere are treated better here than their country of origin. The squeakiest wheel gets the grease though doesn't it? Wow, never, EVER thought I'd see the day when I would agree with Bill on ANYTHING, but god damnit, the point he makes here is statistically and absolutely factually correct.
He started to have the facts right but also at the end caved a little too much before getting to the root cause. Pølice ínteractions are directly related to críme ràtes and deàdly ínteractions are specífically related to víolent críme ratès. The argument with poverty being the cause of críme has some truth to it BUT not when it comes to víolent críme. That’s a culturàl phenomenøn and the culturè ítself needs to change.
The stat is half, half of all víolent críme, year after year, is commítted by our Błack populatíon. That’s not a racíst talking poínt, that’s a DØJ/FBÍ stat. People almost always błame pøverty for this stat but there are plenty of places throughout the gløbe that are completely safè and very pøør. The issue of pøverty needs to be addressed but so does the cułture of víolence…

I don't know what you guys were hearing! Howie never said there are more black killed by the cops than white people! It's Maher who cut him off before he could make his point! Howie was pointing out the fact that black men have to be extra diligent and black parents have to have the kind of conversation than white folks don't have to worry about. That 's a fact which Maher ends up agreeing with. Howie' argument was not about stats and he was in fact talking about people he knows. How many time do you think Maher has been unnecessarily stopped by the police?
Growing up as a lower middle class white guy, my dad absolutely gave me the whole “don’t talk back to police, keep your hands visible, no sudden movements” conversation multiple times. I totally agree that blacks have to deal with police bias, but I’ve always found it weird that people act like the basic guidelines of police interactions are somehow exclusively applicable to blacks. Every parent regardless of color should teach their kids those precautions.

It always seemed like common sense to me. A person I may not know with a beltful of weapons who doesn't know me is walking up to my car, especially at night. Common sense would seem to dictate that getting mouthy, getting out of the car on them, moving around a lot or giving the impression of reaching for something or hiding something is not a good idea and won't work out well for me. I live in the southern U.S. and like some of the other posters have commented, almost every house and many of the people and vehicles have guns, so you really can't blame a cop for being aware of that and cautious of it.
Black people arent dealing with police bias theyre commiting crimes at a higher rate and being treated kinder than whites.
You need to look at crimes commited to get a full understanding.

I agree that it shows a higher rate of violence among blacks, but police/judicial bias is a factor as well (particularly noticeable in sentencing). I have not seen any data to suggest that blacks are treated better than whites. Feel free to point me toward any data/studies I may have missed.

Most white people did not have ancestry linked to colonialism or slavery (Polish, Hungarian, Irish, German, Swedish, etc.). And yet there are many "Hispanics" that do have ancestral ties to slavery and colonialism. They're "Hispanics" with Spanish Ancestry. You'll know it when the media will label them "white Hispanic". . .as it's not meant to demonize the "Hispanic" part but just the white part. 50% of Mexico is comprised of Spanish ancestry.

As a white mom, I coached my son how to act on an encounter with police: put hands on steering wheel, don’t make sudden moves, be respectful etc.
Yes I’ve also done that as a white father. That’s just how I’ve always handled being pulled over and it goes a long way. It amazes me when I see people arguing with cops, pulling out their little cell phone and filming then or just being confrontational. Are you trying to get arrested??

That's awesome. No one taught me, I just put two and two together: I don't want to be suspected of trying to harm the police officer and starting some misunderstood altercation, so I keep my hands visible at all times. Nothing to do with race.
And that applies to all races. The unfortunate reality is a lot of people, particularly black kids are falsely told the police are out to get them, which leads them to fight and get in more hostile encounters with them which just perpetuates the rates of police shootings and incarceration.
Wow, I'm white and my dad had "the talk" with me about dealing with COPs. I'm 60 so it has always been a problem. He told me to be polite, do as you're told (defend your rights in court), move slowly and keep your hands in sight and mostly on the steering wheel. You'll also notice both agreed you should respect the police. That isn't true across the board with all groups in America.

Yes, I am 63, white and have always respected the police when I get stopped. I am polite, only respond when spoken to and remain calm. I might still get a ticket or perhaps a warning if I’m lucky but I don’t become insolent ever. And I taught my three kids to do the same. BTW, they’re all white.

The problem I find with the term 'white privilege' is very much that privilege is a word with many connotations a lot of regular people don't want to be labeled with. Privilege suggests power, status, wealth, elitism, the upper class and comes with an implication that one should feel guilty for having more than they deserve. Most average working class and middle class people are gonna dislike being called privileged, especially if they've had to work very hard to get by and have gone through their own problems in life.
To address the systemic inequalities that poc face we have to get more people to understand them, but you don't achieve that by telling working class white people they're privileged, that just pisses them off and drives the towards people like Trump.

Howie, I had that exact conversation with my four boys while teaching them to drive and we are white. To teach them proper etiquette when getting pulled over to make sure everyone goes home safe is a conversation every parent should have with their child and is not exclusively black or white. I am a Bangladeshi living in the US. I never felt underprivileged due to being a brown Bangladeshi guy. It never crossed my mind. People have group identities and it is easier to work closely and efficiently when people share the same group identity.
Immigrants do better than the native population due to “brain drain”. It’s the ones with degrees like doctors, engineers, etc. and a waiting job that are accepted as legal immigrants, not the uneducated. They don’t have the same history in this country as black Americans whose ancestors were brought by force thru slavery. Nigerian immigrants for instance, are doing great in the US, while the native black population have a low average income, high school graduation rate, and college acceptance rates.

My friend with MS is 60, has had it since he was 24. He works hard to make a living, walks with bent legs. He was told he is where he is because of “white privilege.”
He has a disadvantage sure. But there are two problems he won’t ever have (assuming he is a white male) to worry about is being a woman and the terror of being black. One disadvantage doesn’t negate any advantages or privileges. I have nice teeth privilege and it has helped me get jobs, make good first impressions. But that doesn’t negate the hell that is living as a black woman. Many things can be true at the same time.

I, as a white male was taught the 2 and 10 rule when dealing with police. I was taught to give them "no" reason to feel that they had to defend themselves. I was taught to be respectful and non-confrontational. Each person has individual experiences, so to put people into a categories based on something they have no control over is reckless and irresponsible.
Well I'm white, and my dad gave me that exact speech when I first started driving. Puts your hands on the steering wheel, don't reach for anything and just be polite and do what they ask. It hasn't let me down yet. It's the ones who didn't get that talking to growing are the ones disrespecting cops and getting there faced shoved in the ground. If you do what I just mentioned above regardless of races, and you aren't doing anything illegal. I guarantee you, you'll drive away safely and not get shot. But maybe a ticket for whatever they wanted to give you one for. You don't dispute it there, you dispute it in court.

I lost a job to a less capable black guy. The boss told me he was "Required" to interview a black candidate, and if he was a technician of any ability, the boss would have to hire him. I am not sure where my white privilege came into play.

I do think the distinction between advantage and privilege is an important one, a privilege is a special right, meaning that it’s something that’s granted to you where as an advantage is something that you might experience but isn’t necessarily bestowed upon you. Privileges are something you can give up which implies that people who experience white privilege are taking a voluntary role in doing so, where as an advantage is something often unchosen, natural (we don’t say LeBron Jame’s height is a privilege, although it’s obviously an advantage), or earned if it’s worked for. You can observe an advantage and then take steps to try and increase the likelihood that all people, regardless of group, will experience said advantage, but privilege, has to be given.
An advantage is contextual. Being white and going up for a spot at a mostly white comedy club is an advantage, just as being black and going up for a spot at a mostly black comedy club is too. A privilege is much more absolute. If you're privileged, you're going to come out ahead regardless of the context. America being a mostly white country means that white people are going to experience more advantages overall than black or brown people. That's just a factor of demographics and in-group preference, in the same way that Japanese people have more advantages in Japan than white people do. Just a fact of life and no amount of shrill moaning about it is going to change human nature.

A privilege is an assumed and, often, unearned advantage (like race or wealth or title), especially when it is merely perceived to be an advantage without any objective reason. So, Maher is wrong. "White privilege" is more accurate because "whiteness" is both a built-in, unearned advantage _and_ one that, traditionally in _this_ culture, is perceived as superior, safer, or "normal" without any real justification.
People like Maher get confused because, like you said, context matters. Being 6'8" is an advantage in the NBA but a deficit if you're a jockey. You can have "white privilege" in 90% of situations but be subject of shortness prejudice or age discrimination in others. A black female millionaire can experience prejudice in situations where a working-class white male experiences privilege. It doesn't mean you feel sorry for either or guilt for being either just recognize in some situations some people get to swim with the current and some against the current.

The whole point of these expressions like "white privilege" and "black lives matter" is to make an impact and drive the point across on issues of social injustice. If it makes you uncomfortable then it's probably working.
I will have that discussion with my kids when they're of driving age. When you are a cop any person you pull over is a potential criminal, and helping the cop to get past that mental incertitude is something I want my white kids to practice
I don't know why any person of any color wouldn't teach their kids how to interact with police. You're also not going to win an argument on the side of the road with a cop as a rule of thumb.

If all of these black men getting shot by police have had "the talk" why, in all of the body cam footage of black men being shot by police are they not complying with police? Oh, but they've had "the talk". I haven't seen one black man killed by police that was complying with the officers every word. These liberals are full of horse crap.
I remember having an annoying leftist roommate who would proudly proclaim how his parents never had this kind of talk with him about being pulled over and that it was probably because of skin color. One time his parents came to visit and I challenged him to ask them why they never had the talk with him. The dad chuckles and says, "I figured by the time you could drive you probably already knew not to make armed cops nervous without me having to spell it out."
The other thing is that these cops are on a higher alert because (sorry it's facts) there's a higher probability of a dangerous situation with black vs white

The leftist commie answer is that white people have oppressed them into such privation that they have to run drug gangs to feed their families.
Again they’d say that it comes down to the poverty and lack of good education…which they’d blame on historic racism. Never mind that brilliant black people, who made good choices in life, and who worked hard enough to rise above their peers, grew in such places too. One of the main factors in their youth was the decision to reject the culture of that community, or at least to grasp onto or find the good culture that may exist within the communities.

David, you need an understanding of how neighborhoods are zoned for particular school districts and how that directly affects opportunity.
Schools districts are very much segregated in the 21st Century and because property taxes pay for public schools, you might begin to connect the dots.
