  • Classic piece taken from Orff Schulwerk Volume 1: Musica Poetica.
Personally, I believe Gassenhauer to be one of the greatest life pieces ever created and I always feel like taking a really deep breath and running around the world when I listen to it. I hope you all feel similar when you listen to it and please feel free to comment on your feelings when you listen. Enjoy!

This piece makes me want to dance. It carries hints of any number of folkloric styles, Andean and Central American in particular. To me it feels gentle, flirtatious, cheerful. It makes me think of sunlit spring festivals, smiles, ruffles flowing through air, green branches and rippling streams. A tune about the sweetness of life.

    I really like this :)
I'm german as Orff and for everyone who isn't familiar with our language a "Gassenhauer" is a word for a easy song sung or played on a street. Just to enjoy the audience for a short while. And I think that little piece achieves that. Orff was a music pedagogue and that song for sure made some kids happy again :)

The true origin to this number is Ein Alten Gassenhauer ( An Old Street Ditty) made for the Lute by Hans Neusiedler in 1536, would you believe. If nothing else, this is a wellproven hit from the renaissance. One good version is made by Ronn McFarlane on Between two Hearts, Dorian rec (DDOR-90225) ´96...

Gassenhauer is probably my faviorite piece by Orff.. Our local classical music station in DC played it as the beginning of one of their segments. Gassenhauer is part of his Schulwerk, which is music for children. I think it's a brilliant piece for children.
If you listen carefully, you hear a single note; then additional notes are added until the entire orchestra is playing.
I attend performances of Carmina Burana every time it's performed at the Kennedy Center here in DC... I will never tire of it.

I would've never heard this had it not been for "Badlands" with the beautiful Sissy Spacek. It was an addictive movie because of both main characters and the music score.

Playing this song for a middle School project, and I love it. Amazing song, with enough parts for the 30 of us.

First heard this on Finding Forrester in 2008. I was going through a box of stuff, found the movie. I watched it last night and decided to look up the song. Glad I did.

Teaching an 8 year old girl piano I taught her to understand chords, and to compose in improvisation before teaching her to read music. Obviously one must speak before one learns to read, and write. I used this as example of variations on a theme. I had her playing, and composing like a pro in 10 lessons. Must be why Orff included it in his schulwerk collection.

This music was used as the score for the classic American film 'Badlands'...and is used so eerily and effectively. The film is about two teenagers who go on a senseless murderous rampage across the badlands of the midwest. The dark content of the film contrasts brilliantly with this piece which was originally intended as an ode to childhood innocence...

As a long rime classical music player and fan, happiest and best piece ever written. That includes all the old great composers, for none could outdo this.
