The central French region of Allier is peppered with over 500 castles. These historic buildings are difficult to maintain in good condition, but the owners can count on the support of local residents. At the Château de Fourchaud, for example, some thirty enthusiastic volunteers are busy cleaning and repairing the monument. Prince Charles-Henri, a direct descendant of the Bourbons, appreciates their efforts.

Exactly what I was thinking 😂 But in his defense, he has "ownership" of the taxes and fees that comes along with owning that property. Nobles don't live for free!

It's a worthy endeavor to save and preserve the past by preserving architecture. Without tangible objects to remind, stories are lost.
It took a lot of work to build them and they should be preserved. I love taking care of my home. The prince deserves a lot of credit. 👏👏

He is not rich. The royal family lost all their property in the various revolutions. He is not poor by most standards, but the castle restoration is beyond his means. Many castles are crumbling away because their owners cannot afford to maintain them.

Volunteers find it enriches their lives. Volunteering is a lot of fun. It can be hard work but you get to meet new people, find out about new things, learn new skills, make new friends. If you live alone & have the weekends free it makes them much more interesting. If you are retiring it can bring so much to your life, no need to stay home bored. I have had the most fun of my life volunteering & met great people.

I inherited 2 castles and land during my childhood in the 70s, in fact a watchtower against invasions and a ruined fortified castle, many members of my family had already lost their land and other property due to the weight of taxes, to preserve my assets I gave the usufruct of these assets to transfer these charges without having to lose all that.
My property is managed by the usufructuaries like tourist sites.
Nobody in my current circle is aware of it, besides nobody would believe me because I kept secret my noble origins.

@@sonicdeeofficial8925 If you have not already, go to: " Chataeu Diaries" Stephanie owns this lovely Castle and has been doing it over lovely." It is being done much like it was 'originally' and she has people who volunteer and some who work there all the time, and she is friends with them all! They work there and also live there and have dancing, and parties and so much more and it is on TH-cam. Very talented people and she is as well. Taking acting and artist work and her dad was a painter and they both ( her dad and mom owned a huge mansion which was restored years ago into a home for those with mental illness as they both were psychiatric nurses. Her mom lives there part-time as she remarried after her husband died * after they both the Chataeu * well Stephanie bought it really* and her mom goes to S. Africa to see her husband Percy when she can and her daughter stayed with all her friends. The home is also a Bed and Breakfast. It is in France. She has done very, very well and it is perfectly done, but she does have a youtube video out 'telling how expensive it is to keep running.' In this way, people would not get any wrong impressions as it looks easy as you watch the videos with all the fun they have even while working. She opens gifts on Sundays for those who would not mind watching and they et gifts for this lovely Chateau from all around the world. People love this program as she has a better site than TV could ever do. She is honest and looks like a Princess. She has always wanted to own a Castle and this is living her dream. I truly think you would enjoy it and she loves people coming to visit and staying at the Bed and Breakfast, coming as volunteers or to work. She welcomes all. This home was owned for hundreds of years by a marquise family and once someone from there was asked (that lived in this castle at that time) by 'King Louie the sixteenth 'to go and get 'Marie Antoinette', and the rest is history! She bought it from the last family of the marquis that owned this home. ( They also do come back occasionally to stay when the pandemic is not a problem anyway) She said " She knew she wanted this Chateau before she ever got into it to see it!
To understand exactly what I am talking about and to enjoy these videos as am sure you will and see how she has restored and made this work and maybe you would be able to visit her at the Bed and Breakfast and I am positive she would be honored to meet you, as she has French Chefs come to visit and many others. They even teach the people and everyone on Video how to make special pastries or a meal of some special kind. She does alot of searching and reading in order to make sure what she does at her home is done with the artwork and the beauty that the home deserves. She also can make the curtains and do over furniture etc.
just check it out and see if you like it and if not you can always just leave and never look at it again! But think you may truly enjoy it and relief she is someone easy to reach out to or just enjoy the videos? She knows it is not easy to keep the castle going financially, and will understand what you have gone through too, if she ever met with you personally. ( But the Sunday ones are usually opening gifts sent) Otherwise, there is much more activity and various things going on that are very interesting. Sorry, this is long but I am excited over the video and am not alone. I wish the owner of this Chateau could reach out to Stephanie as he too would love meeting someone like her they would have much in common I am sure!! She reads all the things people say on her videos but it is harder to answer them now. She even has answered ME in the past.

Well, I don't know that anything built in the 19th century can really be called a "castle", but for any building with clear links to French national heritage, the people converting should be given genres tax incentives to do this work...
Tax changes in 2014 (?) shifted personal taxes to assets rather than income, forces MANY people to abandon these beautiful homes.
I hope elegance makes a comeback across the country, to stay.

The government can’t afford them, there’s about 7000 chateaus in France, half will cost millions to restore and will cost hundreds of thousands a year to maintain.
For the gov to restore all these it would cost around 30 billion, and cost around 4 billion a year in maintenance,
This isn’t even considering the cost to buy them, some of the ruins might be donated but the ones in better condition are peoples houses,
Let’s say half are donated, the other half are bought for an average of 3 million, that’s another 10 billion,
So 40 billion and another 4 billion annually...
I’m sure the French tax payers will be Pleased...
