I appreciate you taking the time to share the best you know Mike. I was able to pick up an 09 500ho for cheap. Needs a little work, but not bad. So I find myself poking around TH-cam n I come across this. You got yourself a new subscriber. Keep em coming! ✌
I'm late to the party but I'm poking around for maintenance vids for my 2013 Sportsman. You got the thermostat changed before the snow melted off the clutch cover. I'm impressed and I subscribed.
Nicely done video! Thanks! I am heading to the garage now to get mine replaced. Had to do a starter swap last month. That was a pain. I think I will remove the airbox and carb next time I have to replace the starter...go straight down instead of from the side behind the clutch cover.
You really don't have to remove the hose to take a Thermostat housing loose and remove the Thermostat. Just take the two bolts out leaving the hose and housing together.
Mike watched your video very helpful. Here’s my question my 01, sportsman is running hot . I replaced the water pump along as the thermostat. The previous owner removed the thermostat I don’t know why. My fan seems not to be working either I also replaced the Censor by the radiator. I jumped the wires by the fan and it will come on . I took the 😅 out the new Thermostat
Sorry for taking so long but the temp sensor on the head by the thermostat is the one that tells it if it’s overheating and they can go bad and say it’s hot when it’s really not or they can go bad the other way, I would replace it to be sure
Thanks for this, I had just this problem the weekend with the same model ATV, I bought a replacement from the A store and will try to install it this week and see how it goes, I did have one question though, does the fan need to run all the time or only when the thermostat kicks in?
There is a temp sensor on the side of the head that makes the fans come on and go off and the temp sensor goes bad allot I actually put one on that Polaris a month or two after the thermostat and I’m starting to think it’s best to do them as a pair
Hey sorry it took so long to get back to you but yeah the new thermostat has a rubber gasket on it and no need for silicone, also there is a sensor on the right side of the head that is a temp sensor that makes the light come on and turns the fans on, I replaced it on the same 4 wheeler a month later
I have rebuilt.my water pump, changed both sensors, and changed the thermostat... My fan still won't turn on(I can jump it and it will run so I know it is good) and still over heats... Any thoughts?
@@holleyoff-road3554 thermostat is for heat to a car.and oil to get warmed up in winter.dont think you need a thermostat for an atv.less problems to go wrong, and better flow for the rad, winter time just warm it up before you blast away.

Sorry for the late reply TH-cam has a hard time of showing me peoples comments the day they get posted
Did you replace the gasket or use any silicone? Thanks!

Do you have to disconnect that hose from the joint seems like you can unscrew it whole
Yeah you can do it either way it’s just easier to clean the thermostat housing with it off
We just rebuilt the water pump on a 2003 sportsman 400.
Freaking AWFUL! Spring loaded device was seized into housing. Took me 2 hours to get it out
Oh yeah they kinda suck, I replaced one in a Honda foreman 500 that fried my nerves!
Do you have a link for the water temperature sensor?

Replace the temperature sensor next to the thermostat
Did this repair actually fix the overheating? I must have missed that part
If your having high temps and no fans running it’s the temp sensor on the left side of the head
Is it necessary to put gasket sealer on thermostat?
No the thermostat has a rubber seal made on it
I took the thermostat out and ran it still get hot all so replaced the water pump any help would be appreciated thanks Tom
Make sure the fan is coming on and if it is not replace the temp sensor they go bad often as well
Can you tell me what the 3 bolts next to the thermostat housing are for? I accidentally took that cover off and now I can’t get it to seat properly
Camshaft access port
Thanks for the info buddy
I don’t see the video of the seat cover
We unfortunately never recorded it, I regret it too because the seat cover came out really well😬 I’m terribly sorry.
Do we really need a thermostat in an atv??
some rigs don't have them. if it was built with one from the factory then yes, it has to have a Thermostat.
