Hi Carolyn, tbh I have never read any Alice Oseman book's before and I watched the netflix show just on a wimp, but now I am like obsessed and fixated over it. I read all four volumes and I have rewatched it like three times and when you admitted that you have rewatched it like 6 times, my heart glowed(atleast I feel like I am not the only one who has gone nuts over it😍). I really hope they will renew it for second season, I have so much trepidation over how they will portray the serious topics that are discussed in the fourth volume but since Alice is involved, I am hoping for the best.

Just found you. Excellent reviews of the books you read, and most importantly, I appreciate your honesty in that you read "only" 13 books. So many booktubers are willing to make the most outlandish claims about the number of books/pages they read in a month. Your total of 13 is just over two a week. That's about what I'd expect from an avid reader. I'm subscribing and checking out your old videos!

When Heartstopper popped up on Netflix as a recommendation I dismissed it as a teenage story. I thought I’d give it a go after your glowing review and omg: I absolutely loved it. For every episode it grew on me and I was left with craving for more after the last episode yesterday. I am by far not a teenager anymore but it brings back bitter sweet memories and now being a mum I loved Olivia Coleman and how loving she was to Nick. I’m SO going to watch it a second time - and yes I understand your crush on Kit Connor. Thank you Carolyn for this recommendation❤️

Thought I was the only one obsessed but OH MY GOD this show was such a comfort for my heart. SO beautifully written with such good actors, I NEED to read the books

In case you didn´t know, the books are actually available for free online.
Although I still recommend the physical versions for some nice bonus content.

I love Heartstopper so much! I also get obsessed with things I'm super excited about. The graphic novels and the show are perfection. My mum is not a fan of graphic novels in general but she loved both the books and the show as well!

I feel the same way about Heartstopper and the show, YA, etc. and it’s truly an obsession 😆💕 I can’t imagine someone not liking it! I’m also happy that we have you on Tolstoy’s side for the Dickens vs Tolstoy debate. He is my favourite writer as well and although I don’t think those two short stories are his best, they are still wonderful if you read them with the right lens, disposition and understanding. I gave them 4 and 4.5 ⭐️

I also read The Death of Ivan Ilyich in April (while our book club also reading Resurrection) and it had profound impact on me as I can relate to it so much at current stage of my life and looking forward to your next Dickens vs Tolstoy discussion on this book.

Love your Heartstopper rant. I haven't read the books or watched the show but you make me want to haha

I´m definitely also obsessed with Heartstopper. The show was just perfection! Already rewatched it multiple times, and I let it occasionally just stream on mute while I´m doing other things just to inflate the streaming hours so Netflix is more inclined to give us more seasons.
I didn´t know about the graphic novels before, but now I already read everything currently available.
And despite the novels being available online for free I´m still planning to buy them physically (when I manage to find them since the volumes seem to be on pretty high demand right now)
I just need more of this. Also already planning to jump into everything else Alice Oseman has written, but especially Solitaire, Radio Silence and the novella´s since they are directly connected.

I’ve always loved the old man and the sea so A farewell to arms is calling me too 😂 in April I read First Love by Turgenev, the picture of Dorian Gray, a manga called Parasite in love, and Terre des hommes by Saint Exupéry !! I loved all of them !

I have the same Kanken! If you look inside the inside pocket it explains the bag was originally designed for Swedish students who were having back problems due to carrying around so many heavy books. So that's why they are so perfect for the book lover.

very glad you liked SL-5, which is one of my favorites too, tho typically I think of Billy Pilgrim in his kitchen during a family gathering just slipping away as some memory patients are prone to do. They slip away and they come back and we don't know what to do, and we can overlook that even between those moments of clarity they're still people with value.

The HarperCollins edition of Great Short Works of Leo Tolstoy is a book I've had with me everywhere I've gone over the last 35 years. Master and Man, Ivan Ilyich, Hadji Murad, The Cossacks and The Kreutzer Sonata are all masterpieces and represent, for me at least, the best that fiction has to offer.

That Beatryce book looks lovely! In the historical book I have been reading calligrapher and illustrator monks feature throughout, and indeed our dear friend Tolstoy who it seems was a great admirer of Dickens. So who knows, maybe he did name Dolly in Anna Karenina after Barnaby Rudge's Dolly?😁

I really don't like putting star ratings, it feels very pointless to the way I read personally! All the complicated feelings I have about a book really don't translate to a ranking cause sometimes I might be super impressed by a book but not feel strongly about it otherwise or it may have affected me in a number of ways and it's really all too complicated for that! And I only really see how much I care about a book after some time has passed, too! I of course Could come up with a way to rate books but I really don't see the point for myself at this point in time so yeah I really get that!!

  • @rossetarwen

I totally agree with you about using stars for ranking! First of all, it seems so particular to the individual doing the ranking. Like some people are assessing the writing/communication/ideas and some people are using it to answer the questions "Did I like it? How much did I like it?". And either is fine, but then the cumulative star ranking meaning is unclear. Providing a star ranking feels completely wrong for something like "The Diary of Anne Frank" or even for the final work of an author. I remember I didn't like "How it All Began" by Nikolai Bukharin, which is also just known as his 'prison novel,' but it felt very wrong to give it any sort of star ranking on Goodreads because he didn't even finish the novel before his execution.

I read in our time by hemingway a couple of weeks ago and I tought it was so weird 🙈 Maybe it was because english isn’t my mother tongue, but I didn’t like it at all. Maybe I will give it another try someday. I really liked the old man and the sea and also the short stories I read by him though 😊

I just rate my books by MY level of enjoyment..but they are rather arbitrary between different people as 1-5 means something different for many. Mine is simple..1 is I hated it..2 is poor, 3 is good , 4 is very good and 5 is excellent . It’s all subjective however as to enjoyment for everyone. I on the other hand like Tolstoy but I LOVE Dickens…to me no one writes characters like Dickens and I’m definitely a character driven reader more than plot.
