Most efficient way to fit as much iron ore as possible into the maximum dimensions for a Great Lakes ore boat. Speed isn't the issue (all the lakers are slow), maximum throughput through the Soo Locks is.

Next morning woke to 8" of powder on the deck, then it sleeted and froze on top of that. Great Lakes ain't no joke! I've seen the crabbers on TV up in the Bearing, but GLs are a close second in my chart book!

@@alaricdogface why a bulbous bow is not necessary at all on a ship unless it’s part of the design. I’ve been master on many ships with no bulbous bow. I would like to see one these big great Lakers. I’ve been up the St Lawrence as far as Contrecœur on a ship which was a amazing passage up that river.

maritimefreak it varys throughout the ship the hull is called shell plate and I believe was all of a inch thick with the side plate being thinner the hull is thick because the ships are designed to break through ice on their own to a certain extent as they ride on top of the ice and brake it up buy their weight
It's by no accident that there hasn't been a freighter sinking since the Fitzgerald. That was a wakeup call that resonates to this day. No captain will challenge mother nature the way they used to. Also, if any ship at anytime needs structural repairs, they do not put it off like they used to. Is it possible to lose another ship? Sure. But it it happens, it'll happen with a ship going hard aground somewhere and losing complete flood control. It almost happened with the Roger Blough a few years ago. They actually evacuated most of the crew due to the unstable nature it was in after hitting the shoals at gros cap, st. Marys river. Plus, the 1000 footers were truly designed to bend but not break so the engineering that went into them were extremely well thought out

All the ships had similar types of bows in the past.
The blunt bow is because of the lake ice that forms in the winter. A normal narrow bow just gets stuck the wide bow immediately pushes the ice aside.

Well the channels are 27 feet deep in the iron-ore route channels, and 20 to 23 feet in the inner channels so hopefully less than that.
