The movies, in my opinion, exceeded my expectations were Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Inside Out 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022).
CODA rocked. Last Christmas we had a huge family night, covering all the generations grandparents nieces nephews. Kids, teens, all ages. Barbie came on NO ONE WANTED TO WATCH, including me. A couple weeks ago I was looking and saw Ariana Greenblatt was in the cast, I just saw her in 65. SO figured I would give it a few minutes, then watch something else. Wound up watching the whole thing. Surprisingly good once you make allowances for and over look the ridiculousness. Rhea Perlman as the ghost of Ruth Handler was the crowning touch.
Part 2: Matilda the Musical and Abigail. Featuring the Jekyll and Hyde performances by Alisha Weir. They hinted at a sequel for Abigail, which they better get to it, Vampires don't age.
GOTG 3.
With all the painful stuff the MCU has been putting out, it really scared me that the Guardians last movie would do them dirty so much.
Instead, thanks to James Gunn and the amazing team surrounding him, this movie had me laugh, cry, and leave with a good smile
He made all of us cry and sheer at the theater for sure
to be fair, a lot of ppl didnt really like that movie and most keep saying that only the first movie was fantastic.
How do you make a surprising movies list without M3GAN? That first trailer made it seem like a really bad Fantasy Island style horror movie, yet it ended up being really clever, really funny, and actually tense, with an instantly iconic horror villain
Whole list is terrible
Super Mario brothers movie made billions of dollars
I know right why they won't acknowledge that movie anymore?

The Mario Movie was EXPECTED to be great, though. It was far from the sleeper hits on this list, imo.
Encanto & Puss In Boots were good movies. Oh by the way did anyone get the Peaches song stuck in their heads from the Mario Movie or was it just me?
"Elemental" was able to be a box office hit despite a disatrous opening. Now it has a following. Love the characters and romance.
Sorry, but the movie was still a flop not matter how much people like you and the mainstream media including Disney themselves try to spin it. And the reason why it underperformed was because it's LAME and FORGETTABLE. It's one of Pixar's WEAKEST films and that's a fact.
@@1992disney "Fact" only in your head, bro. You must be male, white and rich if you think the movie is lame.
I didn’t expect Puss in boots 2 to be good at all 😹😹. Now it’s my top 5 animated movies
The following seven movies have achieved $1 billion at the global box office in the 2020s (so far):
- Spider-Man: No Way Home
- Top Gun: Maverick
- Avatar: The Way of the Water
- Jurassic World Dominion
- Barbie
- The Super Mario Bros Movie
- Inside Out 2
Top Gun: Maverick took me by surprise by how great it was, especially considering how long the sequel was to the original. 🎉
@tylergoodman3560 A remake of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and original Top Gun meh.
@tylergoodman3560 A remake of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and original Top Gun meh.
seriously not putting Elemental in honorable mentions despite putting it at the start??? Trailer seemed mix of Romeo n Juliet and Meet The Parents, but it was a severe misdirection. It is a heartfelt immigrant struggle story.
They should have put five nights at Freddy’s, I mean yeah it wasn’t a great score in rotten tomatoes, but it had a good score at the box office and in audience reviews.
I like THE INVISIBLE MAN and I love ENCANTO, PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, and the honorable mention of WONKA.
Fun Invisible Man fact. This would not be Elisabeth Moss first time doing a invisible man like story. One of her first things she worked on was as a kid doing voice work on Batman The Animated Series in a episode called See No Evil where her character a child has a gangster dad that comes into some tech of invisibility cloth who not suppose to see his daughter plays an imaginary character to her to lure her away from her mom.
That's hilarious in hindsight.
Elisabeth Moss, not Kate.
@@heymistercarter. thanks
I'm pretty bais for Godzilla Minus One here. So Yeah Godzilla fan speaks out! Also want to give a shout out for 2020's The Invisible Man that movie was scary as hell. Great job.

@heartfiilaxserena1111 Quite a few of the comic book films and two action films.
Can't forget THE WHALE with Brendan Fraser,
Top 10 best uses of the phrase "Don't tempt me."
Prey - yes, it's straight to streaming, but the unasked-for umpteenth Predator installment was FAR better than it had anyone expected it to be. A genuine classic. Also, Scream VI had absolutely no right to be that good.
For that claim that Hollywood might never replicate the barbenheimer phenomenon? It is in the the midst of doing so right now this year. Inside out 2 has made over a billion dollars at the box office and it is still counting, despicable me 4 has just made a strong box office debut this week and has already broke even, and the Deadpool 3 film is sounding very exciting for MCU fans to go and see it
What they may mean by the "Barbenheimer Phenomenon" is an example of counterprogramming: their tonal difference became part of their box market appeal. Now if everyone starting doing double features of Deadpool 2 and Despicable Me...that would be something!
but none of the three movies you mentioned co-operated in their marketing, like barbenheimer did...so not, it didnt replicate that phenomenon at all?
Godzilla Minus One is a future classic.
I feel like Sound of Freedom should've been an honorable mention, not because it was a critical hit, but because it was a massive financial hit. You have a controversial independent Christian film, that had no major distribution to it's name - was technically owned by Walt Disney Studios at one point - come out and make $250 million, making it one of the most successful independent movies of all time. Probably the definition of a SMASHED Expectation.
They didn't include that because it's a movie that both Hollywood and the leftist media including Mojo themselves despise for obvious reasons. 🤷♀
Wtf? What about avatar 2 and minions: the rise of gru?
They were what we all expected.
Some others that could have been on here:
Avengers Endgame
The Dark Knight
Kung fu panda
Avengers Infinity war
Kung fu panda 2
Spider-Man No way Home
Shrek
El camino
They talking about movies that came out in the 2020s
lol wonka? No. Bad boys 4 life? Yes!!! Lived up to 1 and 2
Metalocalypse Army Of The Doomstar (2023) Great movie excellent finale to the Adult Swim hit I want more Adult Swim movies
Forgot Elemental and Inside Out 2
Sonic, being in honorable mentions, made me wanna watch that movie multiple times. 😮
I’ve only seen Civil War, The Invisible Man, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Barbie, Godzilla Minus One, Top Gun Maverick, Wonka, Bad Boys For Life, Sonic The Hedgehog and Everything Everywhere All Once.
Godzilla Minus One was definitely a great movie and not your typical Godzilla movie. It had some extremely emotional scenes.
what about Pinocchio 2022 gellto deltoro
No inside out 2. It was the highest grossing pixar movie ever.
completely agree about the top three! But - i think you're lying about #1. Most people didnt watch the movie until they heard the hype - so they already expected it to be fantastic. So it didnt really smash expectations excfept in the minds of those of us who saw it before it became famous.
I wasn't expecting to love "Everything Everywhere All at Once" as much as I did, but it really resonated with me, and I felt emotional at parts.

@CharlieHepp Top Gun Maverick was a remake of Star Wars the original one and the first Top Gun.

I tend to like older black and white horror but the newer invisible man blew everything out of the water
American Fiction should've been on there. It was storytelling MASTERPIECE. It got several academy awards.
Didn’t you say this is rent in all of the remake or something?
Inside Out 2, the movie was great and is breaking records. The expectations weren't that high considering Pixar's previous movies
Not great
Sonic the Hedgehog not only exceeded exceptions, it redeemed Jim Carrey's career, which he was great as Dr. Robotnik.
Jim Carrey was already a legend. Why would his career have needed redemption?
Encanto no way didn’t even make that much money.
“That ugly initial design is now a distant disturbing memory.” Yeah um what about Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers?
I have a suggestion for a video floating, said no longer seen their iconic songs sing
How many pointless comments you gonna make?
I’ll always take _Oppenheimer_ in the Barbenheimer debate, being someone who likes history. I’ve yet to see it, but it’ll keep my attention.
It's kept your attention so much you haven't watched it in over a year?
My Top 10 Movies That Smashed Expectations This Decade So Far For Me:
1. Saw X (2023)
2. Anyone But You (2024)
3. Dune: Part One & Two (2021, 2024)
4. The X Trilogy (2022-2024)
5. Thanksgiving (2023)
6. Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)
7. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
8. Bad Boys for Life (2020)
9. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
10. Bandit (2022)
@JSPokemonYT Dune films yeah…., but Top Gun Maverick and Spider-Man No Way Home were overrated. Sonic The Hedgehog and Bad Boys For Life watchable.
That’s so impressive!
CODA , by the story i heard here it seems like remake of an older Indian movie "Khamoshi : The Musical"
It actually is the remake of 'La Famille Belier'.
You forgot Inside Out 2
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
8. This is exactly why we need bad taste humor more than ever.
So glad you didn't put elemental. When first seeing it on here I thought you guys were going to say something. I didn't think it was anything new. It was a cut and copy paste of zootopia and probably a lot of other movies. Glad Encanto got the mention. I swear Disney seems to drop the ball when it comes to hispanic theme movies. They don't do much promotion to them, I remember very little promotion of Coco other than "Come watch a Frozen short before the movie" which felt like they didn't have faith in it.
I loved Wonka and Barbie and Kung Fu Panda 4
FNAF???????!!!!!!
It’s sort of nice people probably have truth or dare
Not sure I agree with the Bad Boys entry. That movie was super forgettable
smashed expectations.. a couple good a few ok the rest.... and civil war what a load of nothing 15 minuets of action the rest of it was nothing, saw an ad for a children hospital before the move,,, it had more depth and action then that waste of theater
Encanto? Really ?
The French (and original) version of Coda is way better
İ don't understand why people like everything everywhere all at once after 1 hour İ got very bored and went out at the cinemas never to watch again
I heard there’s a sequel, I think
Guess I will WAIT till 2028 till MOJO comes up with something NEW ! Just awful !

Sound of Freedom not making this list is absolutely wild.
And why do you think that is?

The only ones I disagree with are Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, CODA and Encanto. Because the first Borat film is still the best, The Power of the Dog should've won Best Picture Oscar rather than CODA and The Mitchells Vs the Machines should've won Best Animated Feature Film Oscar rather than Encanto.
No way home should've been no. 1
Civil War sucked, also why the hell is there a disney movie on here

They where on tract to win awards maybe barbie because it was a chick specific flick but openihimer

@Slayde.Wilson True.
Are you talking about Joe Biden or Donald Trump?
I knew nothing about Everything, Everywhere, All At Once and it's now my favourite movie of ALL TIME. That's how good it is, people

@osculim It was a bit overrated.
@@josh72456 Nope. You have no Idea how much people wanted this movie. I assume you are pretty young ? I am an 80s kid and and I can promise you a big part of the success is because of us gen-x folks going to watch it. This is a sequel we been waiting for 3 decades and we were not disappointed.
The Borat sequel DOES NOT deserve to be in this tier list Jesus
Yeesh, least you got 2 out of 10 movies a non-white lead and cast 🤷🏿
It was stated previously that Civil War wasn't trying to paint the president as Trump, I don't know who's getting worse at being politically biased you guys or Kripke
Hello good afternoon ❤❤
Top Gun stole the plot of Star Wars (1977). I'm not sure why everyone thought it was so great.
@bradyhoward7398 It was out when COVID was still that’s mostly where the success came from but maybe just maybe they never saw Star Wars.
*Civil War was cringe and gay.*

@OscarMPG1 Number 2 was not that original.
@@josh72456 It was GOOD and people liked it. That should count as a best picture
@OscarMPG1 Oscar's are quite complicated yes an mass amount of people liked it, it doesn't mean it was bad but narratively it was Top Gun meets Star Wars. Let's not lie also COVID was still around when it was out that's where partly where the success came from I do not deny the impact because of that partially
