We are joined by Conservative Councillor for Scotton and Lower Wensleydale Tom Jones who gives us the lowdown on the conference, why prominent Tories have been seen at the event and why it won't catch on in the UK.

as a gay man, the discussions around 'family first' policy by conservatives sets alarm bells screaming
they quite clearly stated at the conference that the 'nuclear family' or the desirable model for national conservatism was a union between a man and a woman only
Yes, it didn't take the Tories long to revert to type.

Australia’s conservative government tapped the trans panic well which they thought would be an election winning strategy in 2022. It wasn’t the only reason, but combined with various corruption scandals, wrecking international relations with France, China and pacific island nations, gaffs, Christian morals posturers being exposed having affairs, utter failures dealing with natural disasters and numerous other scandals (I imagine all that sounds very familiar), they suffered their biggest defeat in decades. They suffered one of their biggest defeats in a very safe very blue ribbon seat where their candidate ran the hardest on transphobia which went to an independent progressive.
They ran a transphobic campaign in Western Australia and lost 23 of the 25 seats they held.

What's national about an English national conservativism conference when its funded and written by Americans?
It's because they wanted to play up their Nazi associations.
Quite scary actually. A movement that cares about economics, is anti-austerity, wants to build infrastructure etc but is also deeply socially reactionary, could be a real problem. I don’t think Starmer’s Labour could deal with that, not even close. Glad to hear this “movement” is currently incoherent and full of random weirdos, but it’s still worrying.
The Tories never change. They are no more anti-austerity than the LibDems were anti-student fees. Don’t confuse the amorality or indifference of individual Tories with the nature of the beast itself.
The Tories have always been socially reactionary, but pragmatic about whatever face they adopt - Cameron was like Johnson, someone who simply had mo convictions about anything. He joined the party as a younger person at a time when it nonstop monstered young people. But Hug A Hoodie played well in docus groups, and so did some sort of green gloss. Remember that?
He didn’t care if gay people could marry. If the big pressure had been to make being LGBT illegal again, he would have gone for that.
from what i've seen its tied up with christian dominionism and marrying church and state, so that might work in our favour in the uk, as our christians are less politicised than in the states?
I'm dreading the Eco-Fascists of the 2040's. or even sooner.
@@andrewtregoning Yuck. Most of UK society is secular, and absolutely would not want religion to have more of an influence on our politics.

Helping people to build up stable families, if that's what they want, sounds entirely a good thing to me. Insisting that gay or single people build up "straight" stable families, no matter what they themselves want, on pain of legal and social sanctions, sounds very harmful.
I love this podcast so much, really speaking for the younger Brits. Keep doing what you're doing!

It’s a funny thing being one of “Thatcher’s children” - one of the one in six, back then, we populated places like local libraries, where we found out one day we had a higher chance of developing diabetes than getting a job.
Now sandwiched between the boomers (and our privileged south-eastern peers of that era) and younger people, it makes me powerfully aware of how squashed we were in our youth, completely unable to speak back.
We read about ourselves daily as “dole scroungers” and quasi-criminals just for being “yoof”, we were ALWAYS framed as being “a problem”.
We were subjected to a huge amount of monstering and social control via compulsory work-fir-dole schemes. Even the people we worked beside hated us because every workplace was looking at a dozen kids who had just replaced fifteen people made redundant.
I myself was made redundant three times before age 21: we were bombarded with propaganda to make us thunk unemployment was always only ever a personal failing.
How I wish the internet and access to it had existed then. I believe this country would be very different.

I’m glad it’s been taking off, as soon as I heard the rebranding a couple of weeks ago I’ve been trying to hammer it in, they’re loud and proud Nat-Cs
The N.N.C. (Neo-Nationalist Conservatives) really seem to be an extension of the 1930's religious right-wing Italian Police State of Benito Mussolini.
They really hate being called fascists but that should be asked every time how exactly they differentiate from the F word. Italy's fascist party (Meloni) renamed itself as national conservative, and no should fall for it.

We've got 5 different flavours of it here in the Netherlands and together with the literal neoliberal party of our PM Mark Rutte and the Christian Democrats who are a Christian neoliberal party they control 85/150 seats in the 2nd Chamber of Parliament and the 1st Chamber of Parliament might be more fractured but it leans rightward. In other words we're pretty f'ed.

I saw Sexual Chaos play live in the 1990's, great band. The support act Restrain Yourself were good too but very different to the main act.

Really enjoyed the conversation with the Conservative Councillor I think this across the isle content with people that are intellectually intelligent is actually really valuable and it shows how much the old right/left divide in politics needs to change.

Nothing makes my heart sink more is when I hear the words "National Conservatism Conference" - if I attended, I couldn't control myself at the utter bull crap spouted by them. I would simply blow my top.

Not necessarily the equipment. Sounds like they put the gain all the way up because they are speaking away from the mics, so peaking at the slightest thing, atrocious!

The mics work fine but the sm 7b is a dynamic mic that relies on close proximity. If you run the gain too hot you’ll get a mess. They need lavs or shotguns in this situation. Or at least that’s how I would do it.

I'm 36, and as I've gotten older, I've geared much more to the left. I think a big part of it as the rise of the Internet now you don't buy propaganda newspapers you literally see the damage done by right-wing policies all around you. I own my home, but many my age just cannot dream of ownership the government have failed massively.

The Conservative Party knows exactly what it is, it just can’t say it aloud. It’s a party for the rich that needs to come up with enough culture war and other such issues to get a big enough number of people to vote against their own interest so that they can gain power.

I think it's something wrong with TH-cam at the minute (assuming you're getting the same issue as I am). I seem to be getting a lot of pops and sudden sync issues recently with different content across TH-cam. Haven't changed anything this end and it doesn't happen with anything else so can only assume it's the service at fault.

The audio is so shit it manages to be both clipping *and* low 😂 perhaps caused by gain staging?

Everyone moaning about the audio not realising that time is better spent constructively in the pub. Also, US evangelists have realised that spending lots of money on politics has worked really well over there, so they have now exported it over here, and it's working really well. I worry for the future, but this is just yet another problem we'll have to deal with.

Good analysis of the UK tax/cheap debt situation…how come the Tories are now willing to squeeze the middle when that’s been their traditional base?
