High and Low Carburetor Adjustment on a Stihl Trimmer

  • The carburetors on trimmers, blowers, weedeaters, and other small engine equipment, have several adjustments screws. If your equiment won't stay running or isn't running correctly, you may be able to adjust these screws to get it to run better. The high adjustment screw should be adjusted at full throttle. The low adjustment screw should be adjusted at idle. The idle adjustment screw should be adjusted at idle and is basically just adding or releasing tension to the throttle cable. If your equipment dies when you release the trigger, try adjusting the idle adjustment screw first, so that it adds tension to the throttle cable. If this adjustment doesn't work, it's possible you need to adjust the low adjustment screw. If your equipment lacks power and the rpm's sound too low or if it sounds like the rpm's are revving too high, you may need to adjust the high screw. This video shows how to make those adjustments on a Stihl FS-90 trimmer.

I adjusted my fs 90 with no problems after watching this video. Thank you. I noticed I had a missing nut holding on my carb which I replaced and that was probably half my problem with it not running right. I was able to set the high speed adjustment so it spins like it should at full throttle and I was able to adjust the idle so the head doesn’t turn anymore when it is idling. I was just about ready to buy a new weedeater. Thank you

I have to check I have the big 4 (stroke or whatever) Stihl whackers that die intermittently. Will work for half a day perfectly, and then die out, or it will die out at the last 100 foot section of an acre property. 2 stroke trimmer with problems of super high pitch while full throttle. Not good. Hopefully this is the fix after no restults from spark arrest and air filters and carb cleaner.

The way you showed how the T screw simply pushes the idle resting stop to hold the throttle butterfly more open is gold. Along that same line, am I correct to say that clockwise rotation of both the L and H screws reduce fuel delivery through their respective passages? I can see how you want to run a little on the rich side, to avoid a lean seize situation. When running a little rich, increasing fuel even more will slow rpm.

Great video! I found it because I didn't know what the H and L adjustment pins on my trimmer are. Mine look like pins, not screws, so are those just the caps and the actual screws are underneath? The other issue that brought me here is that the engine is leaking at or near the muffler. I can't tell exactly where but it seems to be spurting out in that area because it splatters on the inside of the housing in the area of the muffler/spark arrester. Not only spurting out, but also enough to where it's dripping. The make/model is Stihl KM56 RC. I'm not sure if it's worth disassembling to look for any glaring damage/breakages to fix that or replace the carburetor. I don't see you responded much to comments, but I'm hoping you could hook me up with a little input from your skill and knowledge base. I really don't want to buy something new if I can fix this and I would always prefer learning how something works so I can fix it, rather than trashing it, and 2-cycle (or any for that matter) engines are definitely a knowledge gap for me. Thanks for your time! 💯

  • @davedangerous

Generic adjustment is usually 2 turns out from stop on the low side adjustment screw. Readjust when the brush cutter warms up. i.e. if the adjustment is lost for any reason, lightly screw the low end adjustment screw all the way in till its stops then screw it out 2 turns. This is an about or approximate adjustment.

@@6atlantis that's making the assumption he's running a stihl, they use a 1 1/4 set point but many do not. I have some that are 2 1/4 +or- and on some the 2 screws have separate settings.
Best thing to do if you don't know (and can't find out) is to let the machine set and be cooled. Start with both screws at 1 1/4 turn out. If the machine doesn't start within 2-3 pulls go up in 1/4 increments til it does start. Tune it up and then let it set a while to cool down and try to start again if it doesn't start within 2-3 pulls you need to retune or figure out what the problem is- bad filter, line, dirty carb, or a vacuum leak. 1st thing I always check is for the leak when a machine I tuned doesn't wanna run right after I tuned it.

Still doesn't say where a good starting point is. As-in how many turns out for each screw for initial startup. Everybody knows what the screws are for...
Locating the “hi” screw, proceed to turn it counterclockwise exactly one turn and a half. You will need to turn the “Lo” screw one complete turn in the counterclockwise direction. Now locate the Weed Eater choke and pull the cable out to start up your engine. The engine, at first, may sound rough when attempting to run, but you need to keep it running. This can easily be worked by using the gas throttle. In order to make a proper carburetor adjustment, the Weed Eater engine needs to be warm.

No doubt, He says nothing in this vid. Factory settings are, turn both high and low in clockwise till it's seated, don't crank it in, just resting, then turn both out counterclockwise 3/4 out. With trigger pinned turn high in or out till you hear top revs, once there turn down just a bit. On low, don't touch trigger turn in or out till you get a low idle speed. then the screw on the bottom is your head spinning, turn either way just to where the head just stops spinning on idle. After a while you will have an ear for it. If you have plastic restrictor caps on the screws, they just pop off
