- The Mercedes Unimog is the ULTIMATE off-roading machine. No matter the job, no matter the location - the Unimog will get it done. There are a gazillion different ways to spec a Unimog. The army use them. It's even been a bloody Transformer on the silver screen.! This really is the Swiss Army Knife of the off-road world.
Both the 7.7lt 6-cylinder and 5.1lt 4-cylinder engines produce MONSTROUS levels of torque (1200nm and 900nm respectively). One can even be used as a TRAIN, able to tow up to 1000 tonnes. These German beasts are seriously impressive, both as an off-road vehicle and a dependable workhorse that is as efficient as it is capable.

Unimog - possibly the greatest workhorse ever
I bought one, a 1978 U1300L Just for 4 WD fun in retirement in the deserts & mountains of Southwest US.
Got yourself a classic there! Bet its great fun, can't be too many of that vintage in the US, did you have to travel to get it?

1960's UNIMOG 411.... wonderful machine for forest work and just having a fun time.
You used to be able to get surplus Unimogs from S America for pretty cheap (as mogs go)...
Fab machines. A welsh farmer family friend had one when I was a kiddy and loved em ever since :-)
I wish Unimog start making a travel version of this unique vehicle. That travel version should be simplified modification without many hardware. One long cabin with rear window capable of opening and conjoining an additional stretch; and also without tire inflation on-go.
The tyre inflation is standard equipment but not much else is. The list of available extras is an 80 page book.
There are a number of companies in Europe who modify Moggies into anything you want like expedition vehicles or luxury mobile homes.

Yeah the Unimogs are damn great, I own a older Model from 1992 and it is simply a masterpiece of Engineering. IMHO nothing compares to driving one of these. It is so versatile that it is a workhorse and a fun-car at the same time.
UNIMOG on Duty clearly a big Mog fan! what do you use for?
Guys That Drive I mostly use it in the woods to take care of the forrest, pulling out trees infested with the bark beetle. And for some other agricultural tasks like mowing grass and transporting stuff. For me the comfort is still great it already has a cab suspension noise reduction and it travels with nearly 50mph. So what could I wish more. It is so robust I never had any serious problem with it.
It probably suits your needs more than a Hagglunds BV206 but the 206 is a more capable ATV. The 206 doesn't have a snorkel - because it doesn't need one.
Total madness and makes every other 4x4 irrelevant. I've recently gone from a U1250 to a U2150 as a truck camper platform. Ludicrous capability, surprising economy and totally the most impressive way to make approaching Defenders or white vans cower at the side of the road.

Liked your video, but at 9 Ton its a pussy weight - but it will go pretty much anywhere. Knock that up to 16.5 Ton with a monster crane then its a whole new ball game, even more so when Mercedes don't have a tyre that can cope off-road with that weight. I know, coz I've struggled for the last 2 years & spent in excess of £20k on tyres and rims just to do my work...

Sadly, not the ultimate off-roader. An ATV like the Hagglunds BV 206 would drive over a Unimog.

The crazy thing is that the ones they drove, the U400/500 are the "implement carriers", so actually not the most capable. The U4000/5000 series trucks designed to traverse offroad and carry much heavier loads, go on expeditions etc make these look like amateur hour. It's honestly crazy, and I want one so badly haha.
but the U400/500 are legally classed as tractors so no GVM or GCM laws apply in other word you can tow as much and you want. where as the U4000/5000 are legally classed as trucks to there's a limit to how much it weighs and if i am not mistaken in the UK there's a limit on how long a truck can be.

@@AbcdEfgh-sq2tf No, it can't. That's a specific feature of the implement carrier. The 4023, 5023, and 5030 are much more standard in the cabin. Somewhere between Actros and U500.

Everything else is a toy.
The Unimog won the Dakar rally 5x on the trot without even competing ie they were entered as support vehicles by teams running cars.
If only we could get these into the states...

Based on the driving capabilities of the guy when there were 3 of you in the Unimog, I have one question - has he a licence to drive a car ? The Merc-man seemed to have quite a bit of additional input to the controlling of the vehicle !
