I believe the message of this song is to not leave this earth a minute before your time, but when your time does finally come, "Don't Fear the Reaper". I was afraid of death for most of my life, and I won't pretend that I don't still have some hint of fear. But four years ago I had a "windowmaker" heart attack, and based on various aspects of my particular case I only had about a 3% chance of survival. A nurse burst into tears after seeing my ECG results and ran out of the ER. I had every reason to think that I was about to die, and I really knew that death was by far the most likely result. And I have to tell you that I was as calm and at peace as I have ever been in my life. I suffer daily from panic disorder, generalized anxiety, and depression. But when I thought I was dying all that fear was gone. I can tell you that I lost maybe 90% of my fear of dying after that day. It took nearly dying to teach me this message: Don't fear the Reaper.

It's my understanding that Buck Dharma, the lead singer, was diagnosed with an arrhythmia and began to think about dying young. Of course, he's still alive, but he wrote this about eternal love that goes beyond physical existence. I've always loved this song and now that I'm older I can relate. I worry about leaving my children too soon as well. I think that's natural.....but still scary.

As a combat vet I will tell you that those who accept and don't fear death are the ones most likely to survive. I gave up thinking I would survive half way thru my first Vietnam tour when I learned that and and I am convinced that got me thru my 2nd tour. The real killer was coming home and finding out nobody cared. I was just different from everyone around me except other vets and I still am. Some say, man that was over 50 years ago. What they don't get is that it was only yesterday.

I've had the pleasure of seeing them live twice.
My favorite BOC song and always will be.
The beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994 and best version) features this as the opening track.
Some folks back when this was on the radio every day thought it was encouraging suicide but deep down it's a love song.
"The love of two is one".

I saw the Black and Blue Tour in Baltimore- was it 1978? I don't remember many details except for once I was determined to hold on to my Black and Blue T-shirt FOREVER. I mean I went to maybe 400 concerts in the 70s & 80s, always bought a T-shirt & they all disappeared eventually. But not this time! So anyway I think my ex-wife stole it when we split up, she probably uses it as a dust rag, oh well that's rock n roll! But was that the best name for a tour ever or what? Goes together like bacon & eggs...or PB&J if you're a vegetarian. It's little "hey I remember that!" moments that make these reaction channels so much fun...thanks for reminding me of that special concert!

"Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is a must-listen. Also, the symbol the man on the album cover is BOC's symbol, which alternatively represents the mythological titan Saturn or the alchemical symbol for lead.

  • @truckrboat
    @truckrboat 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +61

The name comes from a producer of theirs and Black Sabbath who wrote poetry and in it talked of aliens hiding what was happening on earth as the blue oyster cult. The symbol the character on the album is pointing to was the bands symbol they used and it is the alchemy symbol for lead as in heavy metal! The song was written by band member Buck Dharma after he was diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia that made him think about what would happen if he died young. Song was released in 1976

Came the last night of sadness & it was clear she couldn't go on / The door opened & the wind appeared / The candles blew & then disappeared / The curtains flew & then he appeared / Saying, “don't be afraid”-& she had no fear / And she ran to him - then they started to fly / They looked back & said goodbye - she had become like they are / She had taken his hand - she had become like they are
This song is a masterpiece. It’s strange, intense, unique & beautiful.

I have always loved this song. There is just something about it.
As I have been watching music reaction videos, I am brought back to my early childhood through college. This song, based on the title, gives a creepy, fear factor vibe. But now that I am 56, a pharmacist in hospital working with cancer patients, and hospice patients, I think that life experience has slightly changed my reaction to this song. There are so many people with cancer, some fighting, some feeling hopeless and giving up, some holding on for a specific event to happen, or family member to come, some whose pain is so bad that you really have to go big guns, and high doses just to help them find comfort (and when they are finally comfortable, they let go and leave us behind). With that experience and reading the lyrics with the song playing, maybe I was always supposed to work with cancer patients. I can relate, because my mom had leukemia at 54 (and survived another 27 years). But, with all that rambling through my mind, I like the message of don’t be afraid of death. It is kind of like the reaper is there to take your soul to its next great adventure.
I like your interpretation, not word for word, but I took from you … don’t let the fear of death keep you from living.

Three more Blue Oyster Cult songs that I think are absolutely outstanding.
"The Golden Age of Leather" which if you read the lyrics appears to be about a pact of veterans who became a motorcycle gang for a final, self-destructive night, "Veteran Of the Psychic Wars", which seems to dig deeply into how PTSD would feel to a science-fiction or fantasy veteran, and lastly, just for the sheer, lumbering monstrous fun of it, "Godzilla"

Blue Oyster Cult are one of the most underrated and criminally overlooked bands in history. Most people see them as a band with 3-4 radio hits and nothing else but their discography is HUGE and they were all musicians of the highest caliber. And yeah. People mistook this as a song about self-harm or somesuch but the actual meaning is more hopeful. It's the idea that when we accept that we're not caught up on how limited our time is, we can spend that time on the ones we love and enjoy it to the fullest. The "hooked cross" is the band's logo and it's based partly on the alchemical symbol for lead or the planet Saturn.

Three people: Producer Sandy Pearlman, vocalist Eric Bloom and guitarist Doug Roeser (Buck Dharma) were primarily responsible for the sound of Blue Oyster Cult. Pearlman was a mystical visionary, which is where the cultish symbols appear on their albums. Originally the band began as the Stalk-Forrest Group with Electra Records in 1970 and an album called St. Cecilia (get it if you can find it). The Producer, the late great Sandy Pearlman had this concept that weaved together the numerous Blue Oyster Cult albums with the Imaginos character who traveled through history making significant alterations and changes to human history. The band had originated as "Soft White Underbelly" in 1967 but went through several names under its creative director Pearlman. In later years, they would play small clubs using the original moniker. Fans in the know knew the special treat they were getting. The song "Astronomy" appeared on an early BOC album and was rearanged on the Imaginos album, which Pearlman envisioned as being made into a full rock opera or epic movie. However Imaginos divided the band, with Eric Bloom departing and Buck Dharma handling the vocals. When Pearlman died, apparently the Imaginos opera and film concept may have died with him. Perhaps some BOC fan into films will revive it, afterall, BOC was about life, death, resurrection and sanctity.

    The meaning of the song
It's basically a love song where the love transcends the actual physical existence of the partners." - Buck Dharma, lead singer. The song is about the inevitability of death and the foolishness of fearing it, and was written when Dharma was thinking about what would happen if he died at a young age.
BOC has several great songs. Burning For You, Veterans Of The Psychic Wars, Take Me Away, Joan Crawford, Shooting Shark, Godzilla to name a few.

    - the weird cross is the symbol the Blue Oyster Cult (BOC for short) uses as an insignia, it's on all their album covers somewhere.
    - SNL did a skit about this song, look up 'SNL More Cowbell' if you're interested.
    - Yeah BOC formed in the last 60s and got big in the 70s
    - other good songs by BOC include 'Godzilla' (inspired by the classic monster movies) and 'Veteran of the Psychic Wars'

I have seen BOC at least a dozen times. One of my all time favorite bands.
The name Blue Oyster Cult came from their original manager and rock critic Sandy Pearlman who wrote poetry and short stories on the side. One of the series of short stories was about a group of Aliens that were undercover on Earth and were influencing humans. They were called the Blue Oyster Cult. His poetry was also used as lyrics in some of BOCs earlier songs.
Check out "Burnin for you", "Astronomy", "Shooting Shark", "I love the Night", "Tainted Blood", and many more.

One of the best things about being as old as dirt, is that I got to see great bands like this in their prime. I saw them live in 1980, during the "Black & Blue Tour" with Black Sabbath, in Hempstead, NY (where the concert film was made), for my 24th birthday. Still one of my greatest memories BP. 🤘😜

The name is from a collection of poems that the founder and manager of the band wrote called “ The Soft Doctrine of Imaginos” . Their 1987 album called Imaginos is based on this story. These poems were also bases for many of their songs. There are two songs that are based on the band name. The original one is called “Subhuman” and the other is “The Blue Oyster Cult “ both are similar but the latter is a reworked version of the first.
