Education is important and needed in society, unfortunately we have passed the threshold of the idea of “education for all.” Education has been become too expensive. People like you, Clara, bring back education for all. Thank you for giving back to humanity.

I am SO THRILLED for you. Truth be told, my impression of you from this channel has always been "She's so cool and down to Earth... How does she teach at RISD?" My limited experience as a continuing ed student at RISD has led me to the conclusion that the best reason to go there is the material resources and the name on the transcript... But the INSTITUTION? The PEOPLE? The HEIGHT of elitism. You have invigorated the student, hobbyist, and early professional art community with all the classical technique and rigor of formal art education with NONE of the attitude.
Rhode Island will miss you, but you've got more important places to go!

Oh dear, well I'm only 6-7 months late, but looking for Art Prof videos I hadn't watched yet I came upon this one and as soon as I heard "adjunct" I had to comment. I've worked at a state university for years and have learned that the use of adjuncts has grown along with the financial difficulties of the economy over the past few years. Tenure, I've been told, is becoming more and more rare as colleges and universities tighten their belts. So, there's that. I discovered Art Prof late summer 2020 and have really relied on you to bolster my poor art confidence level and make art making more approachable for me. I'm like all potential, plenty of supplies (which I love to buy), and overwhelming fear of actually putting marks on paper. Every time you are your down-to-earth, real-life encouraging self, I get a little more comfortable with not having to be perfect. Thank you so much for your brave move and wonderful teaching and infectious laugh.

I truly believe the art world - academia, galleries/museums, media - is undergoing tectonic shifting. What you are doing is growing and changing, and you're taking us on the ride. Thank you. And, by the way, I'm 57 with a 1985 art degree, lots of 'other' life under my belt, and just now launching my art into the world. Good luck and congrats for making such a huge decision for yourself!

I certainly appreciate that this must be a hard decision, but, truly, the work that you do with Art Prof is so valuable and generous and the fact that it ISN'T behind a paywall is so unique and is really an equalizer. Allowing everyone that has internet access to be able to watch these videos and talk with you and each other on Discord, without requiring payment - this is world I want to live in!! Been really loving this channel as of late! What you were saying around 20 minutes in around "hiding" the channel is what make me hate the fine art world. I can't for the life of me understand why any artist/teacher would hate the online community on youtube. In my opinion, art should never be about the barrier of elitism, but about what individuals can create to inspire others. Unlike many other art channels, yours has the power to transform lives and careers! I'll be here watching and learning as long as you keep creating.

I hope your move goes well! Thank you so much for keeping Art Prof free, finding this channel has been a highlight of my year :)
I sympathize with you a lot re academia even though I'm in social sciences and not fine arts, and am still just finishing grad school. It's so depressing to go to job talks and see that every candidate is from an American Ivey League (I'm Canadian and go to a top Canadian school so the fact that I couldn't get a job in my field unless I went to the States for university is kind of depressing). They're also always super young, which is depressing considering how many great adjuncts we already have in the department have been teaching for years and won't even be offered an interview.
I'm not sure if it's similar in art schools, but in social sciences/humanities there's sort of self-fulfilling cycle: you become an adjunct because you love teaching and need a job, hoping it will lead to a full time position; you are over-worked and underpaid, meaning you don't have the time or funds to complete your own research; you apply to jobs and they don't like the fact that you haven't published recently because you don't have to institutional or financial support to do so. The cycle repeats and each year it gets worse and worse the older you get.
I have several friends finishing their PhDs that have just kind of accepted they won't be able to find a tenure track assistant professorship and will have to work as an adjunct; in part because fewer and fewer of those positions exist each year, and in part because order to get an interview you need to be in top 5% of candidates. This combined with the culture of elitism (not to mention how white and male it, at least in my field) in most academic circles has made me decide to quit after my Masters and just go into something else. Academia is a bubble and sometimes its hard to be realize that there's success to be had outside it!
To be honest, I think the impact you are having with Art Prof is larger than your former-colleagues teaching at a very expensive art school to a select few students. It's amazing that that you are able to reach almost 60k people and teach them them art in a way that is both easy to follow and informative. It also means you get to help people who aren't necessarily looking to be professionals but hobbyist - I know getting into this channel inspired me to start painting again! Thank you -- and all the Art Prof staff -- for the incredible work you have done

Finding your channel has really reignited my passion for art. I cannot express how much joy it gives me to dive back into a childhood hobby that has now turned into a daily practice for me. Its not an understatement for me when I say that your channel has truly changed my life. I am deeply moved... hope things are going well for you - I am a sixty years old anthropology professor in Brazil, I do have the equivalent to tenure here, but I can relate to your disillusionment -- yours seems to me a testimony to the near death of university under the double weight of its racist, colonial, patriarchal 'past' and its neoliberal 'future', and it's happening all over the world. I draw and paint to survive this, and you're helping... thank you.

I know exactly what you mean. I have two masters degrees, and have been teaching as an adjunct for ten years. I could teach a full-time courseload and still make about $20,000 a year, no benefits, no contract. It's SO exploitive. I just got hired to teach 8th grade social studies, and while I know it will be difficult and hard, at least it will be stable, and I'll make more money than I ever have in my life. It's so great that you've been able to find your own path forward. It has its own challenges and instabilities, but I hope it's all working out for you! You have definitely worked out for many of us, your "students."

Hi Clara - all the very best with the future. I find it sad and crazy that Art Prof in some way would need to be hidden - I don't see them so much as being at odds but that Art Prof sets you apart from the norm of academia - it gives you an edge. Even with this pandemic everything has gone on line - you couldn't be better placed! You truly serve the art world and artists and perhaps that level of commitment is where the conflict is - acadmeia have to have a look at themselves and see & live with where they feel short...(?) All the very best with the move and your new future journey - the univese serves all of us in many different ways and (as I believe) you get back what you give - you will succeed extraordinarily... - Stephen.

I relate to Clara's situation. I am now a mature student, but I used to work in engineering. My career experience can be separated into chunks - the first being a new engineer who needed to be guided, then an engineer with potential, then I seemed to drift out of the "has potential" zone into forgotten middle age. There is a huge gender component to engineering and while there were some older women engineers who were in the upper levels of the (very large) company, it was hard to find women who seemed to be in the well established, very respected, "made it" category, which almost all of the middle aged men seemed to be in. It seemed either you had potential, or you were relegated to the corners of the room (parked and out of the way). This was one (of the many) reasons I left.

    • @artprof

Unfortunately these experiences are definitely isolated to art and academia, it's everywhere and so frustrating to hear about! -Prof Lieu

@@artprof Thanks for the support! My frustration level was very high when I left and I'm glad I got out. 40% of women engineers leave engineering at some point (at least in Canada), so I know I'm not the only one who felt that way. Yes, it seems to be everywhere :(

God, I've know so many miserable people in academia (especially adjuncts making nothing). I appreciate you a ton. I'm mostly familiar with the writing side of academia. And the snobbery can be so so exhausting. I love learning from this channel. You're doing great work that I am grateful for. I'm not a trained artist at all but it used to bring me a lot of joy and now I'm coming back around to it, and drawing and painting is a great antidote to depression and anxiety. Your work on this channel has gotten me through a lot of tough hours of this quarantine and I have 5 new paintings on the wall. (Also I'm a special ed teacher and our schools closed without warning. I cry all the time thinking about the kids I won't see again. They really worm their way into our hearts, don't they?) Thank you for what you do and thank you for the risks you're taking, it matters.

Thank you for being a dedicated teacher and for sharing your passion. I just found your channel and I look forward to learning lots from you. I started drawing as a challange to myself. I actually cried in "art" class in elementary school because I could never draw the picture correctly.... But then noone ever taught me how!! So, here I am at 60+ doing this! I live in a beautiful, but isolated area and have litlle or no access to "real" lessons. It would be great to have a logical progression to follow instead of just random lessons on this and that. In any case, I've already learned a lot and am amazed how much I can actually do. Thanks again and I look forward to all of your lessons! I love your enthusiasm!

I was honestly overwhelmed by the college environment after only 2 months there. I was and still am struggling with my own self worth and felt crushed by expectations I made for myself. I've been bouncing around different jobs and schools but nothing's been making me feel better. But I remember feeling like a better version of myself when I was just experimenting in your class. I legitimately miss that.

Amazing to encounter this video many months after you posted. I love your Art Prof videos, and feel, like you, like a "failed" full-time academic. I didn't want them. They didn't want me. What you've offered on Art Prof is so exciting to me: a classical musician in my teens/twenties surrounded by art school friends, later a video artist/curator/critic, then a journalist, nonprofit communications leader, and now a government communications strategist. Oh yeah, and I've been an adjunct at half a dozen colleges and universities in those years. Universities/colleges are fighting for a model that don't meet contemporary students' or society's needs, but does offer faculty a stable income. I'm so grateful that you've set out on this path. Deeply grateful!

I came across this video by chance. I have tears welling up in my eyes, just about half way through. There is something about you and what you are doing. I am someone who has many natural talents but, since childhood-- and I'm a lot older now-- have been shut out of the worlds where those talents are developed and mentored and supported so that I can be the best in them. I have worked a day job to live, finally got some knowledge on how to get to a college/university and kept going until I got my Master's degree. I started college at 38.
My natural artistic talent was finally given a "bump" when I had to take an elective when I transferred schools and I was blessed to have an art professor who was as kind and passionate as I perceive you to be. He wasn't a snob. He was about people. And he saw what I could do, despite not ever having a portfolio or anything. I went from his drawing class to his painting class, the next semester, even though art was not my major.
There are SO MANY young adults and older teenagers who were like me, shut out and separated from worlds of learning that our society demands privilege- for -access. I have always wanted to do something about seeing that change.
I am presently an adjunct, and while I am doing it more for love and don't really need it for money, I KNOW the situation you speak of and have many colleagues in the situation you speak of. It is shameful that our society treats educators as it does.
I have so much else I feel in watching your video, but I have just subscribed. I don't think this is the last video of yours I will view. (And I see this video is a year old...so I have a lot of catching up to do!)

I remember the day I saw the Instagram post announcing this, I had coincidentally come across a lot of pieces written about people's disillusionment with academia that year. Seeing Prof Lieu's honesty, courage, and honoring of herself really locked in my appreciation for ArtProf. It also helped give me the courage to eventually make some changes of my own. I see it's now been almost 2 yrs since this video that just popped up in my recommendations, and I know it hasn't always been an easy road, but I'm grateful to Prof Lieu for being open about this decision, for setting the example of starting down a less-trodden path to stay fulfilled, and of course for the wonderful world of ArtProf!

Hi, Prof Lieu. Thank you so much for your videos - as an artist and adjunct in midwest art school I really relate to your story and decision. I just want some realistic advice from you about my situation if possible... well, I graduated from one of the top art schools on east coast (I am an international student with o1 visa, not even citizen!) and started my adjunct job in 2017. Initially, my job title was visiting lecturer teaching one class per semester. Last year, my job title changed from visiting lecturer to adjunct which I was confused about if it implied demotion or not. i really like this school, and having good relationship with other faculties and students so hoping i can settle down this school someday. however, I recently applied for "visiting professor" position in the department that I am adjuncting for and didn't get even interview (candidate from new york got this position). I am pretty shocked about the fact that the chair didn't even consider me as powerful candidate. Well, good news is I got one more class for teaching from this academic term, which seem good sign that the school sees me as a decent teacher, but at the same time two facts that I faced recently (visiting lecturer --> adjunct; didn't get interview for visiting professor position in our department) make me seriously think they should be all obvious redflags. Could you give me any advice on my situation? Also, i am curious multiple years of adjuncting really hurt future job application in general... should i focus more on residency or exhibition than dedicating much time for teaching, in order to get teaching job ironically? sorry for this long comments...

Hello Prof Lieu! I'm super burnt out on academia as well and I have tenure in a STEM department. What I've come to realize is that my university has an over-controlling board of regents. I didn't understand this for a long time, but a few years ago we had a closed search for a president. The hired president is a disappointment. I wish you all the best with your big life change. :-)

My favorite shows are when you bring in a couple other artists and talk shop. It feels like I'm in the studio painting with my teacher and other painters. We talk about the same stuff. How come in Academia your value goes down with age??? This makes absolutely no sense to me. All senior leadership in my company (which of course is an entirely different business), are over 40, and the higher up the ranks, the older people are on average. In my opinion, that's how it should be, because no amount of brilliance can compensate for real life experience. :/

It makes no sense to me either, I am definitely a much better teacher now than I was 15 years ago! -Prof Lieu

Meanwhile this whole time I thought you were a full time prof at RISD…. They’ll regret being crummy to you, because you are the best teacher I’ve found on TH-cam thus far ❤️
