I both hate and love you for that
Won't it just overheat to the point it evaporates, then dries up?

No drying up on the Panic lake. that one is overflowing.
It's going to dry up soon. The CPU transistors are getting so small that they are pushing quantum physics limits. There is still some room for them to get smaller still, but not by a lot. Hopefully the alternatives are ready by then

Consumers need top-end competition for nvidia so badly
Maybe intel next year ...I'm maybe a bit a amd fanboy but even I know that AmD is just not as "good" in high end as intel in cpu or Nvidia in GpU but that doesn't matter because I don't need no high end or could afford it
The problem with everyone but NVidia is that you can expect a good powerful competitor to take 10 years to reach NVidia's driver quality in overhead and broad software compatibility. Look, AMD has been chipping away at it for 20 years and they're still not quite there yet.
Then again maybe Vulkan will be our Lord and Saviour, DirectX platform isn't terribly hard to implement as apparently even Intel with its two left hands is kinda managing to do that, and OpenGL will be eventually just a high-quality collaboratively developed layer over Vulkan that everyone can reuse, probably from the MESA team, propped up by Intel, AMD, ARM, Qualcomm and Broadcom and whomever else. But this does sound like a dream more than a realistic assessment.
I think amd mid range cards are great. That's what most of the market probably is. So I think Nividia is gonna take a hit.

@@omfgpowned I reckon it would still be a decent gaming cpu for at least another year or two. The i5-750 lasted me 9 years (until 2019) because it OC'd over 1.2 GHz above stock. And that was in everyday use on air cooling.
Although one reason I didn't upgrade sooner (and switched to AMD when I did) was because Intel has been changing sockets every generation since. If I could have dropped a newer processor into the same LGA1156 socket, Intel would have gotten more money from me. Now they got zero.

You don't "have" to go with Intel for a gaming rig, but the entire build is about being overly robust and maximizing gaming performance, and Intel still wins that race, albeit marginally, as compared to the past. I say this as someone who suffered through Bulldozer, blindly adopted and enjoyed the 1700x and recently upgraded to the 3700x, and I'm very happy with it. I love AMD, and they crush Intel on cost:performance, especially multicore, but they are still slightly behind in gaming FPS, but that's fine, because the overall value is still better, for anyone who does anything other than "just gaming."

My school has better processors lol
Look, if you have an i5 6600K you can probably bump it up to a 8700K or higher and overclock it because I believe the same motherboard will support it. I jumped from a i5 8400 to an i7 8700 non K and drastically improved FPS in a lot of games.
I didn't need to go out to buy an entirely new motherboard either. So if I wanted an AMD at a similar power level I'd had to shelf out more money. Quite a bit more in fact. Now the reason I didn't go with the K version was because I'm not an overclocker type. Also the Non K ran at lower temps too so I could install a Notcua L9i on it. All though temps go a bit high in certain games. Near 100 C mark. Getting a Watercooling solution instead.
@@Zefar77 you need a new board between intel generations. 6600k, you can only go to a 6700k. May as well go to Ryzen. 8400 to 8700 is a good move, definitely liquid it though.
@@boingkster Okay, then going AMD could be good idea if one has to buy a new motherboard.
Hey Jay... As an individual who has been working on the 7nm conundrum with those who get it... there are a couple of problems.. 1 is that operable v-core voltage at >1.3v is still causing overheating issues which is why we have been lowering that v-core and using it as a mobile processor platform. 2. The non soldered tp"s are a product of labor issues and the toxicity levels associated with its installation... that is why the thermal compounds are being used. There are more than one problem with the etching process at 7nm... the biggest being reflectivity from heat across transistors. 10nm outperforms 7 when core voltage is lowered far enough to offset this issue. The problem is for real and being worked on. If it were as simple as sending processors out in retail packaging and the public being okay with less than 100% results then you would already have one in your hand.

@@gardriel8208 3900x is only $500 retail
Intel is marketing 1.74x-2.09x increase in performance per dollar for the Cascade lake X Vs Skylake X. This is how I believe they will do it:
(i) increase of stock frequencies by around 10%. For example, compared to the Skylake X 7900X that has an all-core turbo boost of 4GHz, the Cascade Lake X 10900X will be have an all-core turbo of 4.4GHz. Similarly, they will increase the single-core turbo 2.0 from 4.3GHz to 4.7GHz and the single-core turbo 3.0 from 4.5GHz to 5GHz.
(ii) increase in IPC by 3-5% by reducing the latency of the mesh topology (and bringing it closer to the levels of ring bus)
(iii) increase in IPC by 3-5% by increasing the L3 cache while reducing the latency of accessing it. Remember that Intel already increased the L3 cache for the Skylake X Refresh chips by switching from the LLC chip to the HCC chip and by allowing access to the cache of some of the disabled cores. The 10 core 7900X had 13.75MB L3 cache while the 9900X had 19.25MB. However, there was a latency penalty for accessing that extra cache resulting to almost zero increase in performance. It is very possible that after a year Intel has found a way to access that extra cache with reduced latency thereby increasing performance.
(iv) so with the above Intel could have 1.17x-1.21x performance increase. The rest of the performance per dollar (PPD) increase will come from price reductions. To achieve a PPD increase of 1.74 they will need to drop the prices by 30-33% while to achieve a PPD increase of 2.09 they will need to drop the prices by 42-44%.
(v) so the 10 core part will be around $555-$575 in the best case and $663-$692 in the worst case. My personal guess would be $589. For the 18core part my guess is that it will drop at least down to $1399 but Intel might surprise us and drop it all the way down to $1199.

@@gardriel8208 AMD is still better
As a potential high end PC builder for September/October 2019 timeframe, I am going with the i9-9900k for 1 reason: gaming performance is king due to clock speed @ 5ghz. If AMD can get those clocks from 4.3ish to 5.0ghz, I would 100% go AMD. I want to build a new pc before Doom Eternal release in November. Maybe I will wait 1.5 months to see if there is any news from intel. Thanks for the vid.
Agreed. People keep going on about AMD's cores but it doesn't do much good if your workload can't use them, which is pretty much the rationale Jay used in this video. AMD has made amazing strides in single-core performance. 15% over last gen is way more than we've seen from Intel in years. But they still need to be a little bit faster to make it into top-tier gaming builds.
I have a feeling that clock speed while maintaining IPC is gonna be the focus for AMD on Ryzen 4th Generation. If AMD can keep their higher IPC and match Intel's clock speed, then there will be one clear winner in CPUs. Right now, Intel is good for a non-streamer and AMD is a no-brainer for a streamer due to those extra threads.
The 9900k is a beast but it would be perfect if it was a little cheaper
I would still go AMD if I was you, for the same price you can get 12 cores, As an owner of both, I definitely urge you to get the 3900X instead, overall the performance is a lot better than 9900k, at best the 9900k matches 3900X, and its possible that AMDs next Cpu gen will fit into X570 boards, so you may be able to upgrade to the even faster next gen cpus with 4 threads per core
@@thomastormaschy1445 the 3900x is slower in gaming than the 9900k by more than 10% in many games, and average about 10% slower in games across 36 tested. That is what i care about 99% of the time. I want this chip to last me as long as my 2500K I had before it did (so 2024?), but difference will be on this platform can make a big core count upgrade, sell my old CPU, stick with the same platform instead of ditching entire platform, and have minimal downtime. And because of DX12 and the way chips like you said hitting a frequency wall so adding cores, hoping game developers work with what they got and use these New APIs towards that. As for GPU, New 7nm Nvidia cards due 2020, and AMD hopefully going to drop some competition at the high end, so my GTX1080 I got in 2016 gonna last at least 4 years (from 2016) which is ideally how long I keep GPUs. I got it running at 2214MHz core stable (custom loop, EK block) and it benches between the 2060 Super and 2070 Super, and closer to the latter, so I'm happy for now. As long as it can play Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p at respectable settings I'm happy till next gen GPUs.
My rig runs a i7 8700k @ 5ghz,
My wifes rig runs a i5 9400f @stock
My friends rig i built for him runs a i5 6600k @ 4.6ghz
all these chips run fantastic for gaming and editing. got most of them on sales as well.
Wow, this aged beautifully
I just did something I never thought I would do. I built a AMD rig running a 3800x. Because I couldn't wait any more to build a replacement gaming/work station for intel to get off it's over priced ass!
isn't the 3800x $399, and the 9900kf $419?
@@galactusgalan4233 9900k in Australia is $800, 3800x is $609, and 3900x is $789 And you don't need a new motherboard or cooler, easily saving even more so I agree Intel need to get off there ass
@@cameronb2765 so you're saying you upgrade every 1-3 years? High end cpu? That's stupid. If you top high end cpu, it will be good for another 5 years. And you see, ryzen 1000 launched in 2017. And now, those motherboards doesn't support Ryzen 3000 after just 2 years. You think if person bought modt high end AM5 socket cpu, that he will upgrade 2-3 years later? No, he won't.
And if he already had good intel system, and he wanted to "get off Intel, because its overpriced", that's just fanboyism. You already have good system, and you will change it, because intel is overpriced. But you already have it, so he spent even more money to get new mobo and cpu, because of fanboyism.
And if you buy high end cooler for 80-110$, it will last atleast 5 years (atleast 7 years for air cooler). So you are gonna get good cooler, which will keep your cpu and help other components be cool.
And not everyone is in the Australia. He could be in USA. You don't know, so you can't compare prices. If he was in USA and bought 3800x over 9900KF, then it was horrible choice. You could've spent few dollars more on 9900kf and get around 5-20 fps more. And as i said, cooler you buy will last long time. Also it will be easier to sell 9900KF, than 3800x, because everyone knows that 9900kf is better than 3800x .

I think ill still be gaming on my i7 4790k and 1070gtx strix for next 5 yrs, no need to upgrade atm.

Actually quite helpful.
I got an X570 board but needed to save up to get the 3900X. I started getting cold feet when it's been out of stock for so long, plus the price was creeping up, meanwhile the 9900KF was down to $410, and the KS on the way. So the "if you're building an AMD PC right now, stay the course" is reassuring.
In the middle of this video where you talk about tried and true. That’s one of the reason I have stayed with my old Hackintosh. Maybe, next year an upgrade will be in order.
Good rant Jay.

why did tech companies decided to make naming so confusing.
What we don't know is that death metal music that we hear during benchmark results, Jay stays up all night recording all of the guitar and drum and bass tracks for it. He's a talented guy!
It is kind of crazy, what kind of workload do you need to utilize so many cores running at 5GHz? I mean, yes Content-Creating and maybe rendering, but how many users do that? I have a Ryzen 7 1700 non X, it is running stock at 3.2GHz on all 8 cores on water. I am doing Solid Edge and Keysight and it is running absolutely fine at 45 C max with a 240mm radiator. Even a i7 9600k is more than enough to do all kind of Creation and modeling stuff. (My own opinion)
I love how honest people that know and review tech (yourself and Linus, Steve ect. ) are calling out companies for charging top dollar just because of lack of competition with little innovation. This does nothing but the best for the consumer.
You don't need a new process intel. All you need is price cuts.
$350 9900kf, $275 9700kf, and $180 9600kf to make up for the higher power consumption and lack of cooler
Better to sell three processors for $1050 than one for $500
Think I’ll happily stick to my Ryzen 1950x all core 4.0ghz
Props to Phil with the editing and dealing with Jay lol. Kidding on the last part
Agree with Jay about everything, especially his conclusion @13:14. I used to be Intel exclusive, but now I'm FULL TEAM AMD. I've bought 3 AMD processors in the last year (2600, 2700X, 3900X). Absolutely couldn't be happier. Can't see returning to Intel anytime soon.
If AMD needed like 7 years surviving the market to show off Zen, Intel is going to need about the same amount of time before they hit back strongly.
@@davidryger2757 AMD is nowhere close to 'dominating'... They are growing and succeeding yes, but nowhere close to 'fair competition' with Nvidia financially.
Nvidia still owns more shares than AMD, and massively controls the market moreso than not. If anything it's Nvidia's fault for not trying to appease the consumer more and stop pandering to their shareholders.
Intel did it too much and suffered as a result, they lost touch with their consumers. Nvidia is the next to go if they don't throw their CEO out and get new leadership under them.

I know this is a complete shot in the dark, but I figure there could be some benefit to you if you look into this, and I am a complete loss on what to do. I have tried contacting almost all of the manufacturers of my parts in my PC and spent countless hours tinkering and searching forums on the web. I was hoping to see a video covering this topic from a more professional builder and hope for more people to gain insight on this subject because myself and a couple friends of mine have been having issues with games stuttering. Hoping to find more legitimate answers than what is available on TH-cam. I built a high-end rig last year in March.
- 8700K
- Asus Z370 Prime A
- 16GBs 2666MHz Ballistix DDR4
- EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3
- 750W Corsair 80+ Bronze
- Corsair H150i Pro AIO
- 240 GB SanDisk SSD
- WD BLUE 1 TB 7,200 RPM
- Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Well, everything seemed good for a while. But then I started noticing stuttering on a lot of games even though my temperatures were well within safe parameters, usage was low, unless the games are running uncapped, and really only the GPU usage was high then. I've always made sure to keep my drivers up-to-date and download (at least to my knowledge) all of the necessary ones from the motherboard manufacturer. I looked up game specific fixes to see if that was the issue, but I couldn't resolve any of the problems with them. I've dialed all overclocks back and turned them off. Made sure no power saving modes were active. Reset Windows 10 numerous times. Of course made sure that I have as little running in the background as possible, which is just drivers for peripherals, GPU, and AIO. I've ran virus scans, malware scans. Re-downloaded the games. I was at a complete loss. So, I figured something in the system had to be wrong with one of the components in my setup. Bit by bit I tested parts and replaced them. I've tested a RX 570 to make sure it wasn't an issue with the GPU but that did not help at all. New system is as follows.
- 9700K
- MSI Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon
- 16GBs 3000MHz Vengeance DDR4
- EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 (Did not replace)
- EVGA 1000W GQ PSU 80+ Gold
- Corsair H150i Pro AIO (Did not replace)
- 250 GB Samsung 970 EVO NVME M.2 SSD
- WD Blue 1 TB 7,200 RPM (Did not replace)
- Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
The stuttering is still occurring and now my CPU usage is very high when I play games. The game will easily get to 100% usage, though when idle it sits around 5% to 10% usage. Issue still persist in the same games. I'm at a complete loss of what to do. I figured it was some anomaly the first time, but obviously that can't be the case because a similar but worse issue is occurring on the second go around. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've been building PCs for a few years now and figure I have a good idea of how to configure everything and put it all together. I would really appreciate any help, coverage, or a response. I apologize for the super long message and contacting you in a non-traditional form. But I wasn't sure as for how else to attempt to ask you personally. This issue has completely ruined PC Gaming for me and it really hurts after spending so much time and money to not be able to do the thing I enjoy most. I think others could benefit from your insight on this subject along with myself. I want to also say that I love the absolute rise in quality and personality in all of your videos over the past couple of years. You are hands down my favorite TechTuber and one of my most favorite TH-camrs to watch. Thanks for any help, and keep the videos coming!
I only build new rigs when new memory platforms are released, nForce 680i SLI (DDR2), X58 (DDR3), X99 (DDR4), and just waiting for DDR5. My current X99+6950X+128GB Memroy+2-Way 1080 Ti K|NGP|N's is still more than enough at the moment. Which is why I max out the platform when I build it to keep me content until the next upgrade. Only thing that gets upgraded on a current build is my video cards which I only upgrade every other architecture release.
