Jaffna Crab Curry | Temples & Navy Escort | Northern Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

  • Jaffna Part 1: We finally make it to Northern Sri Lanka, starting with a journey through Elephant Pass, the gateway of Jaffna Peninsula. It was where the civil war was largely fought and now has become a symbol of peace and unity. Food is what connects cultures most, so we start by visiting the Fox Resort to eat their legendary Jaffna Crab Curry and visit their underground Bunkers used during the war, which has now turned into an art gallery.
After a night's rest, we meet up with the Sri Lankan Navy to get a private escort to the island of Nainativu, where we visit the two most famous temples in the North of Sri Lanka. First is Nagadeepa Raja Maha Viharaya, the ancient Buddhist temple where Gautama Buddha himself visited five years of attaining Enlightenment to settle the dispute between two warring Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara. It was there that I got to meet the Chief Head Monk of the Northern Province, Navadagala Paduma Kiththi Tissa Thero.
On the same island, we visited the Hindu Temple, Shaktipeeth Shri Nagapooshani Amman Temple, Nagadeepaya. நயினாதீவு நாகபூசணி அம்பாள் திருக்கோவில்.
Local Ferries are available at the Kurikadduwan Jetty for around 40lkr (20cents). It's a 1 hour drive from Jaffna town and a 25 minute ferry to the island.

You’re doing a great job of promoting SL tourism. Thanks very much for that. It’s so nice to show the world that people of all religions and ethnicities live in peacefully and harmony after the brutal war which lasted 30 years.

Buddhism doesn't deny the existence of deities Johnny. It just emphasizes that one's own self is one's own redeemer. No one comes to save you in the end. Simply, everything we have now, good or bad, is earned by us. In broader sense you can't complain and accuse anybody for your fate. But when we feel weak and uttely helpless, we tend to pray for some supernatural hand. By praying Lord Buddha you can't gain anything. He doesn't exist anymore. Average people can't stay strong always Johnny. That's why those statues of gods are there. Temporarily, It can work as a psychological remedy. But it's always an inside job.

We do not pray for Lord Buddha. We do chanting as per our tradition and that include well being of deceased and ourselves. As a Buddhist we believe Karma. Everything happening to us is part of Karma. We can change the way it happen by embracing correct path by daily chanting and meditation. Statues are part of Hinduism which later integrated as a part of Buddhism. Lord Buddha never encourage worshiping of trees and statues or depend on soothsayers.

Kristina is right in her comments on the changes in women's clothing with the arrival of the Europeans. It was not the Portuguese or Dutch , but the sexually repressed Victorian era Brits who encouraged the covering up. This false modesty continues to this day in SL.

I love to make a paragraph of comments. But let's make it shorter. Let's start with crab curry. Yes. Jaffna make curries spicier than the entire island I heard. But every part of the Sri Lanka have their own unique tastes and spices.
Love to see Buddhist temple have Hindu God statues and everyone soo happy. Can't wait to come back and see the whole Island.
That grandma in the temple saying you looks like her son. It's a blessing for you Johnny. We says older people is like equal to God.

A young couple from USA visited these places such as Buddha Stupa, Hindu temple and beautiful paintings all around in both temples.
The male removed his shirt and sat on the temple floor and watched the Hindu pooja accompanied by Nadhaswaram, Gadam etc.
    Really I missed this.

What do you mean by 5000 years ? Buddha not even born ..he is originally a Hindu later converted into Buddhism(created). By the way Buddhism brought from North Indian ( or Nepal) to Sri Lanka after 6th or 7th century. How come 5000 years of bullshit ? Ravanan (Hindu or shivam Tamil king) who ruled entire island 5000 years ago 👍

Vinoth Balasundaram Who said Ravan the great was a Tamil or Hindu. And we Sinhalese don’t believe Valmiki’s bullshit Ramayan. Its only a poem book, How it became a reliable source of history. You should read several books related to Sri lankan history. Wargapurnikawa, dhiwyawadhanaya, wanni rajawaliya, oddisha thanthra, kumara thanthra, wimana shasthra...etc. Atleast go to the places related to king Ravan such as sivagiriya, ravana falls, sitaeliya.. and find out the legends among the villagers which they know from their own ancestors. You few tamils migrate and invade here in 10-12 centuries. And most of you came to here as slaves during British era. This is the sad truth.

    • @lsabdc330

@jeyavarmen Point taken however you cannot solely blame the sinhalese for what happened and I hadn't had the true experience to collate the incidents happened in 1958 and 1977 however I was old enough to witness the riots of 1983. Late president Jayawardane could have easily halted the disturbances with imposing the curfew but he had other ideas instead he fueled the friction with his thuggery henchmen on the ground levels in each town and village. He used his executive powers for his own persistence and needles to say the whole country is still paying the price for his disgrace action. The present rulers are the same they have nothing in their mind except the greed and survival at our vote and sweat. The day the Sri Lankans (majority) solve this conundrum it would be the ultimate downfall to these absurd politicians (minority).

Actually Lord Buddha also visited heavens to preach Sutra for gods also. Gods they too worship Lord Buddha... Lord Buddha never rejects gods. Actually some gods are there they protect human according to Buddha too. The thing is that we need to worship Lord Buddha and we need to offer merits to gods. Gods gets live with merits offer from human and their own merits they have done good deeds from previous births of their lives... we can’t wear open clothes now .. cos people these days majority are not spiritual and they are corrupted in many ways. So it is good that not to wear open clothes now unlike those eras.. Johnny you are promoting Sri Lanka very well .. thank you so much. I will follow you n Kristina both always...and this video specially proves that all ethnic groups in Sri Lanka live in peace and harmony.. I am a Buddhist Sinhala. European powers destroyed the good aspects of the cultures followed by native people(which they followed for thousands of years) and now even the westerners find the values of the old way of living...while the reformed natives still continue to live like colonials.

Again you are surpasing yourself! Great work my friend. Nice discovery of this Island as a visitor!. Now at least more people know about the place. We will certainly visit. I think these temples practice Theravada Buddhism, and guess was integrated with other local religions to keep the peace, perhaps but I am purely guessing without any background support.. We have visited Bodh Gaya in Northern India, closer to the Nepal. Situation is similar, Hindu temples and multiple sects of Buddhist temples exist together in peace. I think from the tattoo on your chest is also looks like a part of Sutra? Mahayana Buddhism traveled east, all the way to Japan, through China and Korea, creating even more sects. But the ultimate goal seem to be the same, to become an "enlightened one", the meaning of the "Buddha"

Great job with your video.!the Buddha was born (2560+80) 2640 years ago. He may have visited during this time, The chronicle has stated that the Buddha, during his second visit to the island, pacified a dispute between two Naga Kings of Nagadeepa, Chulodara and Mahodara over the possession of a gem-studded throne. This throne was finally offered to the Buddha by the grateful Naga kings who left it in Nagadeepa under a Rajayathana tree (Kiri Palu) as an object of worship.[19] Since then the place has become one of the holiest shrines of Buddhists of the island for many centuries. The references to Nagadeepa in Mahawamsa as well as other Pali writings, coupled with archaeological and epigraphical evidence, have established that Nagadeepa of the Mahawamsa is the present Jaffna Peninsula.[20][21][22](wiki), also Hindu god worship in Buddhist temples for two reasons- Indian influence through history and when kings married princesses from India, kovil (hindu) were build in the temple premises for queens to worship and became a habit.

      @cbscboys8784 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Also the Nagapooshani Amman kovil in Nainativu(Nagadeepa) in Jaffna , is a Hindu temple with a cobra statue which symbolises the Naga tribes as they were serpant worshipers. This temple is very popular amongst the Jaffna Tamil community. It’s also seen in Nagadeepa Buddhist temple as they covered Buddha to meditate for a week from rain. The Naga tribes were native inhabitants in Northern Srilanka and parts of Southern India which existed before King Vijaya arrived from North India. King Vijaya was the replacement of the Yakkas who were also natives in the island like Kuveni. During the Pandya dynasty in Lanka , the Pandya King sent a Tamil princess from Madurai in South India to marry King Vijaya after Kuveni died so he can legitimately rule during his period. Then more woman were sent to marry the followers of Vijaya who settled in the island. This is why Sinhalese people have Tamil DNA and Ceylon Tamils have Sinhala DNA as well. Then there are two types of Veddas before Vijayas arrival known as Anuradhapura veddas and coastal veddas. Anuradhapura veddas was the majority which later evolved into Sinhalese. The Coastal veddas evolved into Tamils who belong in Eastern Srilanka. This is the reason why Ceylon Tamils native roots are from North (Nagas) and Eastern Srilanka (coastal Veddas) while Sinhala native roots are from South, West (yakkas) and Central srilanka (Anuradhapura vedda). These tribes (nagas, veddas,Yakkas) were the ones that evolved into Tamil and Sinhala well before any Kings arrival. The Tamil and Sinhala kings/followers inter-racial marriages with the tribal existence evolved into the modern day Ceylon Tamils and Sinhala. Indian Tamils (Hill country) later arrived during GB colony as plantation workers and live in Kandy and Colombo only, not in Ceylon Tamils native areas in North and East. Hope that helped👍
