    Great as always! One of the biggest things that helps with home recording of drums is having dark cymbals! Once I switched to meinl sand/traditional they helped so much. I played Zildjian k darks, A's, and other ones from them and they're just too bright unless you have a really great and well treated room. Hope this helps 🤘

      Yep, the Meinl Darks and Zildjian Dark Ks are the only way to go. Not saying those other cymbals are all not good. Just that these 2 are the most popular go to cymbals that don't suck!

      @@assshakerstudios549 right said! I'm learning to love my Dark K hihats... very complex and quirky, but never gnarly. Like Ant Call said, much easier to make dark cymbals brighter :)

      K Darks were a game-changer for me, though I just bought an Uptown A ride I have high hopes for, being the rebrand of the Remix ride Phil Selway from Radiohead uses. Dark/Dry cymbals just give you so much room to work with! I also generally use ribbons for OHs, which also helps. It will tame even a cymbal bashing drummer as you can compress and high shelf a bit more to bring out complexity without smothering a mix with cymbal wash.

    I like to watch videos like this about recording in small spaces because I run my studio out of my finished garage, and needless to say, I have very little room where I track drums. It’s treated well, and quite controlled, but I have always struggled whenever a drummer comes in and has no dynamics and smashes the hell out of everything. So the number one take away from all of this for Young drummers is learn how to drum with control. Your recordings will come out better and your recording engineer/producer will thank you for it. 😊

    Just a hunch, but I would guess stuff sounded "dark" because Jon has that foam paneling up. So it's probably sucked that top end out of the room

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I imagine its because there wasn't also low end absorption. Normally studios using broad band absorption would still have that top end getting sucked out.... so its probably many factors at play.

    Hey Jeremy, you’re onto something with your stems for sale… could you do another pack with vocals and also include the mix you’d do with it. I’d then tinker around trying to start from the raw recordings and match what you got.
    No need for top notch vocals either, the truth is none of us gets to work with Céline and Bocelli.
    If a whole song is too much work, how about a jingle for your channel?

    Lovely video, attitude and tune.
    👍👍👍
    Very true, and yes, the idea and the "work-with-what-you-got" unfussy attitude can & DO work.
    Sonically, have to say that the toms disappoint (not because of the home recording, but because of the poor state of the drum heads - new ones and/or even more corrective processing needed), and there's a disjointed feeling or awkward relationship between how far/close the snare and the hihat sound, both sticking out a bit - but in a rather unrelated, different way. Oh, and too much Soothe, IMHO, it's already at the point where it can be noticed.
    Nonetheless, fine job & no bull video!

  • @kekkonenhiihti
    @kekkonenhiihti 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    New heads for the toms would have made a big difference. I think.... I think the toms sound pretty lifeless.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't disagree but to that end everything done at home there are diminishing returns for the environment at any point in the kit.

    • @BetterDrummer

      This is accurate, covid hit my budget a little too hard 😂😕😢

    • @md4man
      @md4man 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to agree with this. There are diminishing returns when working in a home recording studio but those tom heads just killed the tone. There was a great job done of polishing those turds but different heads would have made a huge difference in the end result. This is no knock on the playing, recording, or mixing. It just goes to show how important it is to get everything right at the source. Resonance matters.

    • @kekkonenhiihti
      @kekkonenhiihti 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RecordingStudioLoser I agree with that. Though I feel the new heads could have balanced out a lot of the problems recording home creates.
      I could pretty much not care about the small room etc. but whenever the toms came in they were just off. And having worked with those same close mics (and a pair of NT5 as OH) I am aware what they can do.
      Anyways I appreciate showing that it is possible to record drums really decently at home. Though I feel this is kind of a missed opportunity at the same time as it could have sounded better with an investment of approximately $60 for three tom heads.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trying to take the engineer seat here. Sometimes we can’t just tell them to go get new heads. Some do.
      I wanted the focus here to be on what can you do with what you already have. Then anything beyond that gets better.
      Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big proponent for getting new skins and strings often.

  • @seanwalsh999
    @seanwalsh999 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice tune, good guitar tone, however when it comes to drums you are competing with a lot of great Drum Vst's and it is that sound most consumers are used to. So when recording drums I recommend using reference tracks just like for any other mixing project. Doesn't mater how good a player is, if they don't have the tones that at least meet consumers expectations it will be difficult to then, exceed those expectations.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I gotta disagree with the premise. Tone, just like music is a matter of taste and opinion… In this instance no VST could offer up ideas and contribute creatively to process it like Jon did.
      Sure tones could sound better on paper… but it’s hard to mail that human aspect. And it’s for that purpose I think it’s still important to do the best with what you have. Even when recording at home.

      @@RecordingStudioLoser Don't get me wrong, I was just coming at it from a commercial point of view. People like all kinds of stuff and people buy all kinds of stuff, but when it comes to making money I like to look at the bell curve and ride that wave at the top.
      Jimmy Buffet stared out as a country and western singer but found he couldn't make any money at it so he pretty much created his own genera, my point being if you are in it for the money then find out what works for you.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser

      I think humans relate to humanity reflected in art. Either way would rather pursue a career making things I want to listen to not what I Think the masses want.
      But if we apply the same logic there are virtual version of everything that are sonically perfect. But that’s not the point is it? We all know something that am sound fantastic on it’s own often doesn’t always play well in a mix.
      Humans… software… it’s not about sonics as much as it is about process and creative flow.

  • @BenedictRoffMarsh
    @BenedictRoffMarsh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I get so annoyed at the excuse that people use based on this fantasy that great music can only be made with all manner of perfect this, that, and the other. It is utter BS, yet people are so eager to hang onto it to support their fear that they can't do it. Saying it can't be done until you happen to own Abbey Road with Alan Parsons is just avoidance.
    I do wonder tho if you didn't just have a bit of a leg up in this in that you just so happen to have a good drummer in a nice room with a collection of fancy mics (as you acknowledge) - which ends up feeling like you didn't really prove your point. That said, I think that it is totally possible to make lively & intimate (if not shiny-perfect) records at home with stupid-cheap mics (like the Behringer XM8500) so long as you have passion and avoid being silly about it like lining a room with egg-cartons and buying fancy name things. Simply by knowing your material and delivering it (playing/singing) it with passion (and not AutoTune).
    :-)
