Will it run? 1950 Dodge pickup! Heat, darkness, space and a bad mic all conspire to stop me!

  • Rare 1950 Dodge pilothouse cab pickup truck sitting in a dirt floor makeshift shed for decades. The engine is stuck tight. Come along as I try to get this long-lost truck running again. The sound gets better as the video progresses.

    Really liking this video. I grew up in a very remote area & there was an unused 40 acre field behind our house. When I was 11 yrs old my Dad bought 1 of these exactly like this except color (it was black). No battery in it and radiator leaked, but I was allowed to roll it off a hill behind our house (these old vehicles with generators would start without a battery) and drive in the field as long as I wanted. For some reason I was not allowed to shift out of low gear although all gears worked. My legs would not reach the pedals so I sat on the front of the seat and that is how I learned to drive in a 1950 Dodge pickup. Thanks again for these videos.

I really like seeing how other guys take the time. They're effort, and they're humor that they put into the videos and the process that it takes them to remove or reconstruct or fix something.

    Excellent cab shape and frame for sure also amazing me 1950 Dodge not called Fargo back then as I remember them as ! Also surprised that Flat Head 235 Cubic Inches 6 cylinder got unstuck from sitting long time and after Mystery Oil in spark plug holes clean it out tell by video footage too! Also hopefully transmission is okay plus axle to when planning pull it out too! I had giggle on throttle is barn hinge and I seen a 1968 Chevrolet C10 pick up had 292 in line 6 cylinder motor with 1 barrel carb Carter with hand choke cable knob in dash plus Manual transmission column shifter too 1978 GM posi rear gears 377 ! Also gas pedal was funny had on lever of rubber took off had weld of farm tractor from 1960 metal pedal on it too T backwards too on bottom of lever ! Farmer neighbor I knew taught me drive it when age 13 to 18 and when sold farm auction to new owner kept that way to after restoration to plus first Automobile repair company work for too! Also bet didn't know those 1945 to 1955 Dodge truck 235 flat motor also rad , Generator, plus floor shifter 4speed and axle were used in farm tractor company made in Brampton Ontario Canada near me company called Noresman row crop tractor paint red and yellow decals and built Cockshutt COOP 40 made plus share intake and outake manifold same but updraft Zenith 1 barrel carb or truck style depends buyer's wanted plus 6 volt positive ground too ! If saw Noresman tractor it like 1937 year of a McCormick Deerning or Farmall F 20 row crops tractors and so cool ! How found about my one boss first work for back 1992 to 1995 had restoration one and so cool 1950 Noresman motor put 40 hp with 60 torque on 235 Flat Head 6 cylinder motor if saw tractor think Dodge truck with floor shifter on single seater seat of farm tractor! Would of been interesting to see if the clutch and transmission still work but none the less, a chrysler flathead engine is real tough to kill.. didn't cost as much as some do to get running money wise... thats a plus... I think those distribitors are a flat screw style where it is in time or a hundred eighty out when put back but just pay attention to rotor pointing direction... not like the chevy with gear teeth on the distributor, kinda like the flat head fords with distributor in the front by the vibration damper.

    I hope you can persuade the owner to sell it to you. When you do, what do you think of keeping the bullet hole, but sealing it up so that it's weatherproof? Just kidding. Sort of. Also that old radio would be be a fun project for one of the antique radio TH-camrs.

      @whattherust  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dlucas527 That's right, David. It all depends on why the engine is stuck and how badly. If it sticks from overheating, or excess water in the engine, you might be out of luck. If it is stuck from age and moisture, you may be OK.

    Another way you could have broke the engine loose put it in gear put a pry bar on the rear end and turned it try that way go to Walmart and boat fuel primer ball hook it up to a gas line and put it in your gas can hook it to the fuel pump you can prime the fuel pump and carburetor and you can see if the float is stuck or not by doing this

    • @whattherust

      If you disconnect the rest of the electrical system other than the start you will not damage anything. That is what I did on this truck. Only the starter was let connected.

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of them I do not buy. I help the owners get the vehicles running, and leave it to them for the next steps. This truck is an example. I got it running and ready to move out of the shed it is in (lots of work not on video), and the owner will be taking the next step to get the needed repairs done to make it roadworthy.

    • @whattherust

      It depends on the vehicle. Most are not mine (like the 1950 Dodge), so I just help the owners. Some I buy, like the 1948 Dodge. Then I do some repairs and sell them. I don't have a lot of room, so I am not able to hold onto anything very long.
