Why you should film 4:3 with the Avata/Avata2

- Following a bit of consideration I have finally concluded why 4:3 is the better aspect ratio to film with if you have an Avata 1 or Avata 2. In this video I'll share my reasons and also some exceptions to the rule.
Thank you for the work that you put in. Great explanation and made me think about recording in 4:3 from now on.
That was brilliant! Thanks for that. I rarely use 16:9 on my exported videos, was wondering why I film using that aspect ratio as well. Duh! Brilliant explanation on the gyro flow dynamic zooming.
Glad it was helpful!
I really liked the explanation! Congratulations for that. I just wanted to ask you if it is possible to use the 4:3 aspect ratio while shooting at 4k, because i can not do it in my Avata. Is it worth it to shoot at 2.7k to crop less, or that quality difference gets you the same quality as you have if you shoot at 4k 16.9 and crop? Thanks and nice work mate!
@@aeroart2402 glad you liked the explanation - with the avata 2 it’s possible to record in 4:3 in 4K. If 4K is not available with the avata I guess even at 2.7k there are some advantages like the reframing option in post when recording 4:3 but in terms of quality alone you may be just as well to record in 16:9. Hope this helps
@@dronewilder5234 thanks mate, i didn’t know that with the Avata 2 it’s possible.
@@aeroart2402 yes but not at high frame rates either so still not perfect as I enjoy using fit for slow mo shots but it’s a step in the right direction
thanks for this, wow what a huge help! once u see it u cant unsee it
Great video and awesome explanations. Since I've got Avata 2 I have been recording in 4:3 because mostly I'm making vertical Reels. I did not know that 16:9 is streched image, that kinda shocked me. Only thing I hate is black bars in goggles. I hope DJI will make 4:3 zoomed in preview in goggles. Right now we can go down on image scale. I hope they will make 110 to 130% display scale without loosing telemetry. Have you done any testing comparing gyroflow vs rocksteady? I havent tested rocksteady yet. I dont know is it zooming the same as gyroflow in sharp turns. Thank you again. Great content !
Hey thanks for the comment, I have done some tests of gyroflow against rocksteady - more intensively with the avata 1 though. I can say rocksteady has definitely improved on the avata 2 but it does also adaptively zoom. You see this if for example you suddenly land/crash, the video visibly zooms out once movement stops- this is not noticeable during normal flight though. It is the quality loss on heavy zoom and up scaling that’s more concerning personally. I’ll do some more tests and comparisons of rocksteady vs gyroflow.
How do you record vertical reels on it?
@@mrguerra12345 you can’t record vertical as such but if you record 4:3 format you have extra pixels top and bottom to crop the footage into vertical video by using a vertical video timeline on your editing software
Excellent video, thank you so much!
@@Slayz38 glad you found it useful!
Wow! What an amazing information you have shared with us. Thank you so much.
Great video! When flying in 4:3 are you using normal, wide or ultrawide setting?
@@crmedia_marketing I normally use wide or ultra wide in order to maximise use of the sensor and avoid upscaling
Great video thanks. Like you, a bit gutted that I've spent the last year recording in 16:9 on both Avata 1 and more recently Avata 2
Do you know which other DJI drones supports 4:3 aspect ratio? For example the Mini 4 Pro?
As far as I know only the FPV drones (avata 1, 2, dji o3 air unit) support it for video. With the Mavic 3 drones and air2s you can however record in 5.1k and 5.4k respectively which would allow you to more or less crop to 4:3 without much or any loss in quality
@@dronewilder5234 thank you very much for the answer!
Awesome thanks for the video. Its the fix I need for to shoot once for both 16x9 and 9x16
Great video . just one question if you could please . Which video software are you using on your Apple Mac . thanks 👍
Thanks - I use Adobe Premiere
Hi, i want to know the best way to crop horizontal videos to portrait. I am losing a significant amount of video quality in doing that with capcut pro
Best would be to film in 4:3 and then import onto a portrait timeline, making sure the footage is expanded to just about enough to fill the frame
Another reason to shoot in 4:3 is to enable H265 (HEVC) codec instead of H264 - can be achieved by shooting 16:9 in DLOG-M, aswell. However, I don't feel as confident flying with goggles in 4:3, esp. through narrow spaces. Maybe I need to get used to it.
@@tomseen5740 yeah it definitely takes a bit of getting used to - possibly because the image looks stretched on the sides which focuses attention on the centre when in 16:9
Super useful, thanks 🫡🫡
Excellent comparison, thanks!
Yeah I switched to 4:3 when I got the Avata 2 and wished I had of flown that way with the Avata 1 also.
Definitely glad I switched now though 🙂
@@dronewilder5234 Same here!
very informative video! thank you for helping in decision making. tho I noticed that after 6:52 the video is totally not filled to 16:9 :p
lol very eagle eyes of you

Hi Thanks for being a new subscriber. I think it's possible that 4x3 is not available with Horizon steady due to lack of processing power. Have you tried 4x3 with horizon steady on lower than 4K quality?
Good explanation, bro. Thanks alot.
Question from a beginner. How do you later use the 4:3 footage since most places you can upload the video is in 16:9? Is it stretched back to 16:9?
@@Alexandros-if5bs so normally the best way to use the footage is either to import into gyroflow as 4:3 and then export as 16:9 or keep the export as 4:3 and then „crop“ it to 16:9. essentially chopping a bit off the top and bottom. This also allows you to move the 16:9 image up or down a bit with the extra space. I wouldn’t stretch it as this will deform the image. That’s essentially where you would need an anamorphic filter before hand in order to stretch the image without deformation.
@@dronewilder5234 thank you for your answer. That's very clear. Also great video very helpful.
I think 16:9 only stretch image when you select 'super wide'. If you select 'wide' it will just crop off top and bottom of 4:3 image. So if you dont want stretch image you can select 16:9 with 'wide'.
I've used 16:9 in wide mode and can confirm that the image is stretched
Does anybody know why i don’t can Film 4K in 4:3 on Avata 1?
@@klein320 have you tried Lower FPS settings?
@@dronewilder5234 yes, don’t work, only when chaning to 2.7k or lower
@@klein320 are you on the latest firmware? Also you may need to turn off rocksteady and use gyroflow to get 4k in 4:3
@@dronewilder5234 i will look, thanks
Yuck! This looks like the first old flatscreens. They had that mode to stretch to fill and it always looked terrible. Looks like DJI is only doing it on the edges but still 🤢. I appreciate the side by side comparison!
I was genuinely surprised to see the distortion - it’s not quite as noticeable in flight until you freeze frame while passing objects close.
