  • Kumi Souls Games and Playstack's The Last Faith is here at long last, and is yet another phenomenal insert to the ever expanding 2D Metroidvania Soulslike genre. Taking homage from the likes of Fromsoftware's Bloodborne and The Game Kitchen's Blasphemous, The Last Faith thrives in its excellent combat (highlighted by its bosses), and interconnected world that were a joy to experience.
A dark, gothic fusion of metroidvania and soulslike. The Last Faith thrives on merciless and precise combat with a huge range of weapons, firearms, and custom executions at your disposal. Let nothing stand in your way.

I think having questlines that can expire is fine IF there’s a recognizable indicator. Like a game saying “if you have unfinished business now is the time to turn back” and simply putting a clock indicator next to a quest marker.

For the most part, the bosses in this game are great. Only disappointment is that Wymond is a pure clone of Cold One Beast. Otherwise, the bosses, the late game ones especially like Laddok and shadow Cthulhu, are really cool.

Yes, the writing isn't the strongest part of this game. Like, there are no indications of Anabella being a servant to the outer god, and Caterina is only ever so suspicious if you were to speak with her already knowing what she is. Medea isn't mentioned anywhere, and serves just to be a discount Moon Presence (and mind you, Moon Presence - Pale blood - is literally the reason why Bloodborne's protag begins their quest) with no clear goals other than just replace Laddak and be evil doing that. Then there is Lisa. She is clearly supposed to be like Lady from DMC3, but lacks any of the importance of the latter. Imagine, how much better would she be, if there was at least 2 more meetings with her, during which it is revealed that Laddak is her father, and she would be the one to finish him after Eryk cut off all of his 4 wings. Yes, it would still be plagiarism, but at least it would be in a good sense. Instead, she's just an annoying wench who we have to leave alive.

I largely agree with this post, but I did have to comment that Medeya is actually mentioned in-game, albeit extremely briefly. The Oxneyvylle Family Crest key item calls out Medeya as having been the last head of the Oxneyvylles to hold the crest before losing it in combat. My best guess is that she killed and replaced Junas, the eldritch goddess that everyone else worships, and is using everyone's faith in Junas to bolster her own powers. This specifically isn't mentioned anywhere in game, and thus is basically just speculation, but it makes some amount of sense given the rest of the lore.
The core of the story (again, communicated pretty badly) is that Laddak and Medeya are fighting over who gets the be the main god that everyone worships. Laddak does so by gathering together the Sepolcri (the promises you break; still not 100% sure what they are), while Medeya does so through subterfuge. She wants to be the power behind the throne kind of figure, thus why ending A is taking the throne and becoming the new pope of her faith. However, since she was originally the head of the Oxneyvylle family and the leader of the witches, she clearly didn't start out as an eldritch god. Thus, my thinking is that she killed Junas and usurped her position as a cosmic god and then used her position as leader of the witches to lead her organization to hunt down all who opposed her, including most of Laddak's supporters. The Witch's Lament spell item description suggests that eventually the witches discovered that the orders they were following were being delivered by a corrupt source, but when they turned on their leader they all got wiped out. This, then, sets Medeya up to have Erik, the protagonist, get freed so that he can finish the job the witches refused to do and finally kill the rest of Laddak's supporters, and finally Laddak himself.
Either that, or Junas never existed and Medeya ascended to cosmic power some other way. Regardless, though, the lore is clear that she used to be the head of House Oxneyvylle and the leader of the witches, and that somehow she gained cosmic powers, began to oppose Laddak, and tried to take over the position of chief god of Illygarth by means of subterfuge.

Great video, Guys! I haven't played this game, but it definitely looks cool as a fan of both Metroidvanias and Souls-likes. I agree with your sentiment about developers trying too hard to make the dialogue sound sophisticated. As a writer, myself, the substance of your dialogue matters more than the floweriness of it (i.e. it matters more what you're saying than the way in which you say it). Some games -- like FF Tactics and Odin Sphere -- used more Shakespearean language, but the dialogue felt more natural and wasn't overly verbose or convoluted like the quotes you mentioned from this game. This sounds more like the devs right-clicked on every word in the script, went to synonyms, and picked the most "sophisticated" word to replace the one they used. I made the mistake of trying that when I was 13, and I quickly realized that it read like absolute garbage. Lol.
As for the Eldritch Wight, I can sort of extrapolate its meaning from the two words. Eldritch means strange, otherworldly, or sinister and has largely become synonymous with Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Wight means a ghost, revenant, or some other entity along those lines. So, that title could just as easily have been Sinister Revenant. Also, that boss's design is reminiscent of Cthulhu (who has a dragon-like body, bat wings, and a tentacled face), except Cthulhu is gigantic, invincible, and billions of years old.
I feel like some of these bosses were intended as homages to Castlevania, as well. The Harbinger of Nightmare reminds me of the Twin Dragon Zombies from Circle of the Moon. Lord Patryk Laddak is similar to Dracula in a lot of the games, with the first phase having him teleporting and using AOE attacks like fire pillars and the second phase seeing him turn into a winged, demonic form. Lisa's name is likely a reference to Lisa Tepes, a human woman who became one of Dracula's wives (as well as the mother of Alucard) and was executed by the Church for suspicions of using witchcraft. Not to mention that the gank fights where the two bosses complement each other is similar to the likes of Slogra & Gaibon and Werewolf & Minotaurus from Symphony of the Night.
Anyway, I'm enjoying your content as always and look forward to your future uploads!

I've always found it interesting how rare it is for the final boss in a game to be the best. Ideally, a game's boss roster would get better and better as it goes along, but that's not a common occurrence. Thinking over the nearly 300 games I've played, there honestly aren't that many examples of the final boss being my absolute favorite. Some games that do come to mind, though, include:
    - Ys: The Oath in Felghana
    - Mother 2 / Earthbound
    - Final Fantasy 6
    - Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage
    - Crash Bandicoot 4: It's about Time
    - Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and some of the other 2D Mario platformers
    - Persona 3
    - Fallout 1
    - Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
    - Hyper Light Drifter
    - God of War (2018)
    - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    - Original Castlevania & Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
    - DuckTales

Always great to find someone who knows what ys is. I agree with your point but I have a theory that final bosses are often subpar as they tend to go more for spectacle than a good fight (best example of this is monster hunter). Any way a few of mine.
      Dmc3/5: Vergil
      MGR: Senator Armstrong
      Sekiro: sword saint ishin
      Lies of p: nameless puppet
      Most Kirby games
      Dragons dogma dark arisen: daemion

    • @rpgfan1187
      @rpgfan1187 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@_Sinduss Yeah, Ys is my favorite JRPG franchise, and Galbalan, Sinister Marauder from Afar, from The Oath in Felghana is my favorite final boss in all of gaming. It still seems to be a rather underrated series, but it has gained some more traction in recent years and new games are still being released. I think both The Oath in Felghana and Origin have pretty solid boss rosters for Action JRPGs and could make for good boss ranking videos.
You make a good point about a lot of final bosses prioritizing spectacle over substance, which can make for cool visuals at the expense of the gameplay. I've never been a particularly big fan of fights where the spectacle gets in the way of the gameplay mechanics, but there are some exceptions -- like Giygas in Earthbound -- where the boss is so unique and memorable that I give it a pass. Isshin the Sword Saint is one of my favorite final bosses, as well. Sekiro almost made my list above, but I personally love Genichiro's fight even more than Isshin's (which is probably a pretty hot take).

Honestly this game is pretty rare in the sense that i don't think that a single boss is bad , they are mostly decent or good but nothing amazing I would say , and I liked the final boss more than these guys and I think for me it ranks higher , not the top spot but higher than these guys have put her .
I have seen some examples for the final boss and the only 1 that I can think of not counting dlc just the vanilla game is Raven Beak from Metroid Dread .
I have seen some examples here where the final boss might be the best boss in the main story but if you consider optional content than it certainly is not .
God of War 2018 , yes Baldur would likely be the best boss fight if we count mandatory bosses but if include the Valkyries then Sigrun overtakes him by quite a margin , she is by far the best fight in that game especially mechanics wise .
Sekiro I would agree it is Sword Sain Isshin but that is until they included the ,, Inner ,, versions of the bosses in which case I would put Inner Father as the best boss in the game as he received the biggest change out of any bosses but it did come much later after the game's release so I don't know how far it is to put him there .
Can't really say much about the other games as I have not played them or I agree with their placement . I would agree that Vergil was the best boss of DMC5 but I have still yet to play as Vergil and now that Dante is the final boss if you play as Vergil he could be a better boss than Vergil .

    • @rpgfan1187
      @rpgfan1187 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@blabla-fw9ix That's a good point about Sigrun. She's definitely the best boss from a mechanical standpoint, so I have to agree with her ranking above Baldur.
If I were to rank my current top 10 favorite final bosses (limited to one per franchise for the sake of variety), they'd be:
      1. Galbalan, Sinister Marauder from Afar (Ys: The Oath in Felghana, 2005)
      2. Giygas (Mother 2 / Earthbound, 1994)
      3. The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, 2004)
      4. Isshin, the Sword Saint (Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, 2019)
      5. Kefka (Final Fantasy VI, 1994)
      6. Ripto (Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, 1999)
      7. Nyx Avatar (Persona 3, 2006)
      8. Gehrman, the First Hunter (Bloodborne, 2015)
      9. Omega Flowey (Undertale, 2015)
      10. Lavos (Chrono Trigger, 1995)

Hey it's the guy who thinks Odin is the best boss of final fantasy 16 and now the year, since to my knowledge there is no more games I think come out that have near as good bosses. So yeah I am excited to see you best bosses of the year, although I not sure if you do that or just best games of the year. I just thought since bosses seem to be one of the biggest things about your channel you might cap the year off with that. I know you will eventually finish final fantasy 16 but other than what I saw in the comments about nier automata, is there any particular games you guys might do a boss ranking because you guys want to. Like I remember last time you said there usually two types of rankings that have to come first, the type your paid to review and the type your paterons want you to review. I just was wondering if you guys had the time, because trust me I tried to edit and at least to me you guys do more work than I ever could with this stuff, is there a couple old games that you guys like that you just have not gotten the time or just maybe not think it gets views. The main reason I am asking was when I first saw this game I was like it's a mix of bloodbourne and blasphemous, and I knew even if it wasn't the as good as either of them you guys would totally make a video on it. I just wanted to make sure that the moment Metroid prime 4 releases I going to see on my subscription feed all bosses ranked in like the first hour of launch because I pretty sure one of you guys is excited for it considering that the first videos I watched of you guys was a boss ranking of Metroid prime 1-3 and I remember you seeming like you really liked those games. Jesus everytime I text anybody I look and I like yeah I texted enough. Anyway hope to see what your top games are, I like to think blasphemous 2 and final fantasy 16 and maybe armored core 6 somewhere in the top 10. I thought this game was kinda shit tbh. I wrote a review of it on Google for those curious but to quickly summarize, I think that it is so derivative of Bloodborne and Blasphemous that it is actively distracting. The game has such a lack of identity that I just didn't really enjoy it (similar to how Joker wants to be a Scorsese movie so bad). On top of that the god awful level design where there is hardly any variety in gimmicks or mechanics (literally every level is just hit 3-5 switches to open this locked gate) and then you're met with pretty average bosses. I didn't feel super impressed by most of these bosses and felt they were just passable. Combat is serviceable but feels like most of the enemies are just damage sponges. I was also cucked out of the plat on my first playthrough because all of the NPCs just collectively roped near the end which is such an insane creative decision that there is literally no reason why this would be justifiable in my head.
    18) Edwyn, the Shadowscourge Horror (the most offensive thing about this boss that wasn't mentioned is that it is buggy asl. Bro wouldn't spawn in the arena every other attempt, and what's worse is that when I died to him the first time my souls didn't drop in the place where I died in, so I just lost my souls for no reason. Fuck this guy)
    17) Leena (this boss and a few others highlight one of the biggest problems with this game's combat, which is that the dodge cooldown is just a smidge too long and will often put you in moments of unavoidable damage, of which this boss is FUCKING FULL OF THEM. This is miserable on top of being a lazy rehash of a boss with a stat buff. It's insulting)
    16) Giant Patron (a whatever, unremarkable first boss. Hilarious how all of the other clones of him that show up around the map are piss fucking easy)
    15) Winged pale lament duo (no idea what the point of this was. It's a fine fight I guess, no strong feelings)
    14) Voracious Terror (also no strong feelings. This guy shows up every once in a while and just doesn't change lol. They just randomly decided that for this one random encounter he would have double the health)
    13) Cold One Beast / Old Wymond (it's an ok fight, not sure why there needed to be 2 of them in the game where the the Wymond is noticeably more fragile than the Cold One but whatever)
    12) Medeya the Cosmic Voice (I didn't realize this was a texture glitch, I thought the floor was supposed to be magenta because I believed that the devs would do something that obnoxious. The fight is also kind of obnoxious, the move where she just darts around the screen is kinda nonsense because the difference in elevation cannot be registered in time before she starts the attack. Also that ice shield does nothing but just pads out the fight even longer for no good reason)
    11) Starborn Nighthunter (I kinda enjoyed these fights. They die in like 10 seconds but it's not quite as obnoxious as the usual Souls NPC fights thankfully)
    10) Lisa (just a Starborn Nighthunter with actual dialogue and a unique design)
    9) Starlight Beast of Illygarth (I think I was more turned off by this being a visual rehash as there has already been so many repeats and reskins in this game. This fight is pretty good but I just couldn't help but roll my eyes at the sight of another Edwyn looking mf)
    8) Manfredd the Accursed (sorta the same deal with this guy. And I'm only getting hung up on this because I feel the game's bosses overall were so unimpressionable that I'm grasping at straws to recollect any inkling of feeling I obtained fighting most of them)
    7) The Harbinger of Nightmare (cool concept for a fight, bland visual design aside from the arena. This fight wants to be Sierpes so bad)
    6) Nyxaroth the Eldritch Wight (idk what the hell the name is supposed to mean either, but this fight was kinda fun. I hate ads in boss fights, but this wasn't too bad. The shield is literally just Urizen's shield from DMC5)
    5) Dr. Ridley Hermann (my only issue with this fight is that the second phase is kinda boring. He spends so much time underground and you only have a couple seconds to wail on him at any given point. Still it's pretty damn cool)
    4) Yegor and Leena (Leena still kinda has dumb unavoidable damage moments but I felt the gank overall was very well executed. Tuned just right for this point in the game)
    3) Annabella and Caterina (I thought this gank was excellently executed. It kinda does the same thing as Ridley where they spend too much time off screen and it just pads out the length of the fight but I thought the moveset was fun to learn and it was perfectly balanced)
    2) The Burnt Apostate (aside from the fireballs hitting you from off screen which is kinda bullshit, I thought this fight was still pretty fun and riveting. Bro wants to be Pontiff Sulyvahn so bad though, but still the fight is pretty sick and I enjoyed it)
    1) Lord Patryk Laddak (as much as I want to shit all over this boss for being responsible for all of the NPC deaths and delaying my plat trophy for another 10 in-game hours, I still enjoyed this fight a lot and can't really hold it against him too much. Flashy, visually striking, good moveset, he's definitely one of the only highlights of this game for me)

my main problems with this game are that the lore is bad and makes me feel dumb for not understanding it (its cause its boring), some attacks and status effects being the most annoying things ever crafted, the framerate and dropped inputs on switch, and my personal vendetta being that the shotgun has an incredibly long cooldown that can't be cancelled. the one thing this game does better then Bloodborne IMO is that the guns actually deal damage and feel useful outside of parrying. still, blasphemous at 40% of its power is pretty decent for me considering how much i love the games its based on
