i played these games back to back and the animation frame rate in this game was immediately noticable and it was almost unsettling, its really impressive how they still managed to make this game even more grotesque and fun to play
Regarding afilaor, a comment from another video: “A piece of folklore for anyone interested in: The sharpener is a job that, in both hispanic and latino culture, is easily recognizable for his characteristic pan flute; every time there is a sharpener near your neighborhood you will hear his pan flute as it is how they announce their services. I believe that this tradition has been around since the 1600's and it started in a city Called Orense in Spain.”
As a Spanish guy, I can confirm nowadays is actually kinda of a meme (cause you know, the sound is so recognizable, everyone knows how a sharpener's flute sounds but nobody I know has actually ever needed to sharpen anything ever), I was literally laughing everytime he did the flute thing. Also, his name is literally sharpener, "Afilaor", is just "Afilador" (sharpener) but missing a d, which is an incorrect way of saying it, but is still used commonly here in the south of Spain.
@@kyrinky I mean, 99% of people would never write "afilaor", but like a good chunk of us in the south will just skip the d entirely while talking in a coloquial environment.
@@daleodorito I just realized you replied to my original comment. I grew up in Central America, so we also had the afiladores. I had totally forgotten about it as I moved from there about 20 years ago. It wasn’t until I read that original comment that all the flashbacks came rushing back.
One thing that many people seems to miss about Afilaor is that durning his phase change he does an overhead slash after he finishes his current combo. Durning this overhead attack his blade snaps, after which he jumps away to find a new sword. That attack where he throws weapons all over arena is just him looking for a new weapon to use. Also his blade changes from rusty to steel to tempered\gold, signifying increase in power. And yes, he is a best boss in the game. Especially because you fight him less than half-way through the game, before you get too many upgrades.
I haven't seen anyone mention this but I noticed it too, fantastic attention to detail. I think I died like 30 times to him so I had a lot of attempts to look for stuff like that lol
my mistake was that I went straight to this boss some how with only 2 potions and the health you have at the beginning of the game, and also no useful magic and short sword it took 10 attempts and a little bit of malding but worth it
Dude! I did not know about Afilaor's alternate death animation when he gets dealt the last blow while he is airborne. That is excellent attention to detail right there.
Hi! I'm spanish. Fermosa fembra does mean "beautiful woman" but its not a dialect. It's old spanish. Many words in spanish changed over the years. Plenty words starting with F evolved into starting with H. In regular spanish, you'd say Hermosa hembra.
I had never seen that mid-air death animation for Afilaor, usually I had only seen the one where he gets set on fire. Pretty neat new thing I just found out watching your video at 21:47
I just beat the game for the first time today and got Ending A. This was an outstanding Metroidvania and easily replaces System Shock Remake as my favorite game of 2023 (I've only played two games released last year but still). It was a little bit more difficult than Blasphemous 1 for me but not significantly so (43 deaths vs. 40 deaths). Eviterno was definitely the most difficult fight for me, but I managed to pull off a clutch victory on my 12th attempt while using the Veredicto and the temporary invincibility spell. I consider this game a significant improvement over the first Blasphemous, and nowhere is that seen more clearly than with the bosses. Blasphemous 2's boss roster is definitely up there with the likes of Snake Eater, Undertale, Cuphead, and Shadow of the Colossus as one of my favorites that I've ever experienced. As for my personal ranking, I'd have to go with this: 11. Faceless One, Chisel of Oblivion 10. Svsona, Fermosa Fembra 9. Incarnate Devotion 8. Odon of the Confraternity of Salt 7. Sinodo, Hymn of the Thousand Voices 6. Orospina, Lady Embroiderer 5. Great Preceptor Radames 4. Benedicta of the Endless Orison 3. Lesmes & Sleeping Infanta 2. Afilaor, Sentinel of Emery 1. Eviterno, First of the Penitents I also could see some homages to bosses in other games in some of these fights. Orospina reminded me a lot of Hornet from Hollow Knight, the final stretch of Sinodo's fight (with the burning floor) felt kind of like Barma'thazel's fight from The Messenger, Benedicta felt like a better version of the Karura fight from Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, Afilaor was like an even better Great Nailsage Sly from Hollow Knight, and Eviterno's first phase was very reminiscent of the first phase of Graham's battle in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.
Afilaor was the first boss in the game I beat without taking any damage, which I attribute to how well-designed his fight is. his attacks are unique enough that I can recognize them early and know how to respond, but he kept me on my feet enough for the fight not to feel dull or repetitive.
i started blasphemous1 two weeks ago and have like 7 hours playtime. I killed all three bosses to unlock the door for the "inner sactum". I killed this Arcbishop and now i will go for this scorpion boss. Never played such a good game and i am totally excited for blasphemous 2.
The first time I heard afilaor flaute was a shock and a great reference to the ppanish culture. Basically, and an "afilador" is a worker that shaps knifes. He usually goes with his car or truck making the typical sound of the faute to get people's attention is they want to use their services. In Spain it is normal to be in home or working and hearing the flaute.
Like I did for Blasphemous 1, I'll go ahead and rank the main areas of this game from my favorite to least favorite: 1. Two Moons 2. Basilica of the Absent Faces 3. Sacred Entombments 4. Mother of Mothers 5. Crown of Towers 6. Manor of the Embroideries 7. Streets of Wakes 8. The Severed Tower 9. Choir of Thorns 10. Elevated Temples 11. City of the Blessed Name 12. Sunken Cathedral 13. Crimson Rains 14. Aqueducts of the Costales 15. Grilles and Ruins 16. Labyrinth of Tides 17. Beneath Her Sacred Grounds 18. Profundo Lamento 19. Ravine of the High Stones 20. Sea of Ink 21. Repose of the Silent One Two Moons was easily my favorite area, as I love everything from the layout to the atmosphere to the gimmick. I can't remember if you guys beat Symphony of the Night or played some of it, but, if you went far enough in that game, then you'll know exactly what the gimmick of Two Moons is referencing (and it was implemented very well here in Blasphemous 2). Similarly, Sea of Ink sort of feels like a much shorter take on The Lake Bridge stage in Rondo of Blood.
This game kicks so much ass. An improvement over the first in almost every way other than story, and especially in its bosses. 3 DLCs later, Blasphemous 1 churned out one of the most impressive boss rosters I've ever experienced, and this game has perfected it. Not a single bad boss, truly quality over quantity, and if this game gets story DLCs and I'm sure it will, there's going to be even more bangers to look forward to. The only thing I'm slightly annoyed about is how the things that were added later on in the first game should have been base game here. NG+ and boss rush should have been day one here, they were extremely positively received features in the first game, why leave them out again? My list actually was a fare bit different from yours. But since I enjoy every single boss here, I don't feel too strongly about what other people think. You really can't go wrong with any of the bosses here. My ranking is based on using only the Ruego al Alba (except for one boss) and no time stop prayer. Also Alex I know you can't roll your Rs but I like that you still try to pronounce the names with an accent. The game deserves that dedication 🙏 11) Faceless One, Chisel of Oblivion (the obvious bottom bunk, bro literally has 2 attacks. However, he does his job as a tutorial boss/de ruster and he is still not bad at all) 10) Svsona, Fermosa Fembra (also a really cool fight, I had a hard time reacting to her beam attack because the platform you're supposed to hide under was almost blending into the background for me. Only slight irritation, and most definitely a skill issue) 9) Incarnate Devotion (slightly disappointing that this is just Esdras for the most part, but definitely MUCH better than Esdras lol. The platforms aren't random and the attacks feel much fairer. Great spectacle too for a final boss) 8) Odón of the Confraternity of Salt (this is a great boss and this placement is purely personal preference. I hate ads in boss fights. I love everything else about this fight other than the ads. Even still, they're mostly tolerable and aren't too annoying) 7) Sínodo, Hymn of the Thousand Voices (this is what Our Lady of the Charred Visage should have been. Very fun to dodge attacks, an amazing platforming section, and nothing that feels too overtuned to the point of obnoxiousness) 6) Lesmes and Infanta (this was also the first boss I fought after Faceless One, and these guys definitely fed me my own ass. 16 attempts to bring these guys down, which is the most I took in this game, Eviterno only took 9 for me. Anyway, I was not at all expecting a gank fight but they absolutely nailed it. You have to be on point with your spacing, it's very much akin to Quirce or Amanecida of the Golden Blades. Get too close to a wall and you're starring in a Bang Bros video. Kinda like how Isidora was also very dependent on positioning, it's the right design philosophy for a 2D gank fight) 5) Great Preceptor Radamés (this was my second of the three regrets, and this guy was awesome. I love the attack where he just throws shards of glass on you. I love that he has bodies on a stick and tries to whack you with it. I love how much space there is in the arena. This was also the boss I beat to get the no damage trophy, and even with that it wasn't super easy) 4) Orospina, Lady Embroiderer (awesome duel. The ONLY fight that I didn't use the Ruego al Alba for. It just felt right to use Sarmiento and Centella here even though I didn't use it for the rest of the game lol. This fight tests positioning and parrying, almost like Isidora but not as hard. I love the Judgement Cut attack so much and how it can just coat the arena. I love when she makes a clone and starts dancing all over the screen. My top 4 is honestly so interchangeable, it could go the way of whoever I fought last pretty much lol that's how good the top 4 are) 3) Afilaor, Sentinel of the Emery (this guy wins in terms of atmosphere. It is so asphyxiating. And the fight itself is just perfect. Great moveset variety, I really like what they did with his multiple phases here. He didn't necessarily get new moves each phase, he just got stronger moves, and since his moveset is already so well designed, it doesn't bother me. Intensity is what this boss is so good at) 2) Benedicta of the Endless Orison (what a set piece this was. Using the level's platforming gimmick in this fight was perfectly utilized. The backdrop of an endlessly falling elevator slaps my nuts so good, and the music is my favorite theme in the game as well. Not a hard fight, but so well designed, memorable, and fun) 1) Eviterno, First of the Penitents and Last Desecrator (this fight was so satisfying to figure out. Not to brag, but since his difficulty was mentioned in the video, I took him down in 9 attempts. Still one of the hardest fights for sure, but one that I loved figuring out. Parrying this guy is better than sex. I actually didn't hug the walls so that I could react to which side he does his attacks on, which was super fun to me. When he starts going sicko mode in the final phase it is equal parts ass clenching and nut busting. It is so well animated and just the perfect challenge)
@@Aquiteprolificcommenter yeah man idk what to tell you, his moveset felt super natural to me. That doesn't mean he's easy, I just felt like I was getting into a zone every time I fight him. I don't necessarily think Lesmes and Infanta are easier, but I fought them very early with barely any weapon upgrades and they fucked my tight asshole six ways from Sunday
Idk if y’all will see this or not, but thank you so much for the edging strats against Eviterno! I beat him on my fifth attempt after watching this video, and I’ve been struggling for days beforehand
While my list differed from yours (I had Lesmes at the very bottom, for instance), I’m glad that we (and pretty much the entire community) agreed Afilaor was the best boss in Blasphemous 2. He was so good that it kind of made me mad that none of the other bosses before or after him were anywhere near as good.
Seems I'm one of the only people who used the rapier the entire game. Also, man I must have gone is some strange route as Radames was the first boss I fought (after Faceless one) and he was STUPID HARD for that early in the game. Orispina was my favorite boss as well. Fighting her with the rapier makes huge difference. Feels like a genuine sword fight.
Having repeatable cutscenes in boss fights is the most ridiculous design choice I have ever seen in any of these games. Having to not only fight the pointless first phase of Eviterno OVER and OVER and OVER again just to get to the actual challenging part, you also have to sit there through two monologues every single time. RIIIIIIIIIIII-DIculous!
Svsona was based on a Myth from Sevilla I believe the little Skull tablet above the Merchant in the Hub town exists in Sevilla and I believe it is meant to serve as tribute to the Story of Svsona Ingame Svsona was kind of the person who kicked things off with the miracle going to town spreading it´s deformity as she was too obsessed with her beauty, staring at her reflection all day long until the Miracle took the opportunity, manifested, and made all the people that stared into the lake turn into abominations
Seguiriya to the Memory of your Eyes (the time stop prayer) + Veredicto (the mace) is soo busted. In the Devotion Incarnate fight, if you use the Seguiriya and then stand near the heart and while crouching spam the attack button, you continuously spin the mace around you, dealing ridiculous damage (you may need to be on one of the platforms for this to work). This is also pretty easy to make work against Eviterno Edit: This has apparently been drastically nerfed in the latest patch, but you can still do good damage with it instead of being able to completely destroy the boss by repeating this
I felt like boss difficulty didn't warrant the stat boosts provided by Altar Pieces or rosaries, so I did the fights without them. I hope a future patch beefs up the difficulty. New attacks, increased speed, unpredictable attack patterns, etc. For example, the platforms in the Incarnate Devotion fight should crumble and reappear (not like the usual ones, bit more time before they crumble)
I enjoyed B2, but I actually liked the first game better. It had better storytelling, tone, atmosphere, lore, and art direction. B1 really nailed the souls-like gothic horror theme while B2 makes me feel like I'm in a Renaissance painting.
the tone of the games is supposed to be different. in blasphemous 1 you were this faceless nobody exploring a world that was pretty much already dead, full of grotesque and awful monsters. blas 2 is more grand, youre a legend in the game lore, theres a larger than life feel to everything. most of the grotesqueness has been put into the npcs, while the bosses are mostly other penitents like you. the art direction is superb in the more varied environments and much more memorable npcs, which is impressive because of how memorable the first game was. i think blas 2 did a great job of improving on the first while still being its own game, making for a duology of games that i will still replay separately because theyre both so unique and fun
ha! you two would probably lose your shit if you come to my country(Uruguay). Afilaor or Afilador is the very old profession of knife sharpener. That flute sound that you hear during the fight is actually the sound they make wile walkling or riding around looking for customers, is the way to let people know that they are in the vecinity.
Dude when I first played Lesmes kicked my ass so hard I had to back out, do Radames and Orospina, and then come back to the first boss I met after Chisel. I remember saying 'Oh fuck' out loud upon finding out about the 3rd phase
I was kinda surprised to see Afilaor in first place! I mean, i think he's good too, but Eviterno is so cool! Also, i loved all your comments on the bosses, especially the line where you said even Custodia can make technological progress if you give it a thousand years while the Penitent One wears armor over a right muscle shirt! Buddy, you're going to hell for that! Penitent One- *insert reaction*
I killed eviterno and incarnate devotion with the time stop ability. 4-5 hits charges the verdicto and you can use it again. Felt great. I tried other things but this one worked like a charm. VEREDICTO + ZA WARUDO. Before that it took me like 5-6 attempts to beat him (eviterno).
While I understand Afilaor as #1, to me, it was Eviterno because of his second phase. Not gonna lie, when I reached it 2 times and didn't even find the right moment to heal so I could even attempt to study his patterns, I contemplated whether or not I wanted to finish the game. It felt way too difficult to try and learn. But sure enough, after a few more attempts and just going "well that certainly didn't work, I guess I'll just keep trying random crap until something sticks", it finally clicked. And when it does, boy is it an adrenaline ride. With many bosses you can sort of tune out when you learn the patterns, but here you had to be constantly ready to dodge and just get that 1-2 hits before you gotta dodge again. The only boss fight where you're constantly moving making it feel like a real fight among equals. It was just one of those fights that stick in your mind like "Heck yeah, I beat ur ass!" without being rage inducing.
They should definitely put more executions maybe they can do it like doom where he crushes the enemy’s limbs by his own hand without the use of using every three weapons
All the ranked bosses in a nutshell 11. Qiyana 10. Space invader 9. Gwen 8. The devil (from cuphead) 7. Commander Niall 6. Melquiades Jr. 5. Eggs benedict 4. Artorias of the abyss 3. Krang and dababy 2. Biblically accurate angel? 1. Michael Myers
I figured out an exploit to break the tangle weed on accident. I realized that if you have the veridicto spin skill it gives you just enough height to be able to switch to the alba and be able to dive. So I was able to dive straight into sinodos arena before I was supposed to. And since I didn’t have the skill from that area I was forced to take a bunch of unavoidable damage in his last phase but still beat him in that first attempt. Kinda silly that it worked that way but still really enjoyed the boss.
Great video, Guys! I really need to play these games at some point, since I love both Soulslikes and Metroidvanias, and the bosses look downright incredible. Do you guys think you'll ever cover any of the Castlevania games? The earlier games are more stage-based in the vein of games like Mega Man, but, starting with Symphony of the Night, they took on the Metroidvania design with interconnected areas. I wouldn't say the boss rosters are anywhere near the best out there, but there are still plenty of fun, memorable fights in those games. Anyway, I'm enjoying your content as always and look forward to your future uploads!
We may someday, but I don’t think anytime soon. I liked Sotn, but I don’t have any particular strong feelings on the boss roster or the game as a whole, really, beyond liking it for aesthetic merit. If they made a new game it might be on the table, but outside of mega man we don’t have much stake in retro era stuff at the moment. Glad you enjoyed the video, and definitely check the games out; they rule
@@Cytonox Gotcha. There are so many amazing games out there and never enough time to play most of them. I'm in a constant battle with my own gaming backlog.
I won't throw shade at anyone who had to use the time-stop Miracle to defeat Eviterno. He is a tough, very hard-hitting boss and that prayer is found pretty late game. Well I found it late game, I imagine the Game Kitchen intended it for healing and landing a few quick hits, but given the Altarpiece combos, you can pretty much lock the bosses in place and wail on them. I think if they nerfed his damage a bit in Phase 2 he'd feel more... surmountable? He doesn't feel like one of those cheap hard bosses you would rather cheese than fight. But I do think he hits too hard in that second phase. So you barely have a chance to learn and master his patterns. Edit: Also Infanta is a girl, not a boy that is paired up with Lesmes. She's presumably the same girl that carried off his head in the backstory for him.
Damn honestly game looks so much better than 1 The controls look a lot more fluid and the bosses looks WAY better the worst bosses of 2 seem better than like half the bosses of one loo
I’m not sure if they patched some of these bosses because Odon did a lot more damage to me and I 100% the game so I had all the good beads and prayers. Aside from Eviterno I died on Odon the most.
I agree on Susona being low. Hated the fact that the game has zero consistency on what you can i-frame through and what you can not. Through almost entire game you could dash through projectiles, and here this ability is disabled because devs wanted a bullet hell boss. Heck, she even shares the projectile visual with an ordinary enemy whose shots could be i-framed. I'd put Incarnate Devotion below Orospina though. (Almost) static picture and a clusterfuck of the battle which I mostly tanked through stacking resists.
Out of curiosity, what are you guys' favorite 2D Metroidvanias? I know Jack has talked about how both Blasphemous games are among his all-time favorite games and that Hollow Knight is up there for Alex. Aside from a couple of indie games, my experience with the genre is pretty much limited to a bunch of Castlevanias and some Metroid titles. There are a lot of games in the genre I haven't played, like the Guacamelee games, Blasphemous games, Shantae series, the Ori games, Axiom Verge, etc. This is my current top 5, though: 1. Hollow Knight (2017) 2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997) 3. The Messenger (2018) 4. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (2003) 5. Super Metroid (1994)
@@Cytonox Cool list, Alex! There are a lot of excellent Metroidvanias out there. I'm still hyped for Silksong, whenever it releases, and, if Team Cherry delivers on our expectations, it could easily be one of the best games of the 9th gen.
@@Cytonox Great list, Jack! Symphony is the only one of those I've played (one of those games I've beaten well over two dozen times over the years... to the point where I could get 200% completion in under 6 hours), but I've heard great things about your top three. I've actually never heard of Moonscars. That just goes to show how vast this genre is that there are so many different Metroidvania games out there.
@@alexszulczynski5546 i (alex) do not, but Jack is a fan of the series. We have no current plans to cover the series, but I don’t think he’d be opposed to covering it in some capacity someday. time will tell!
I'm sitting here laughing because I'm playing through B2 for the second time so I can really enjoy it and the bosses you guys said were the easiest for you kept killing me.😂 Benedicta had me ready to throw my Switch across the room 😂
Hi there. I wanted to say that this video is awesome. I have a friend who will be playing this game soon and he nearly fully completed the first one. I have low vision, so the first game was very difficult and I’m finding that this one is as well. I might reach out and see if there’s anything the developers could do to patch the game to help people like me.
You think Afilaor's sound design is cool? Well, get this: his name and sound design are a reference to the job of ambulant knife sharpeners in Spain (yes that is absolutely a thing). They go around towns offering their services and announcing themselves with the same trill of the pan flute that the boss does in game right before his big slash attack. th-cam.com/users/shorts0F1ScvgZGeA?si=PBQAZJIa853XygLl Video for reference^ The Game Kitchen really have done their homework in including references to Spanish culture, literature and art in this, there's sooooo much
Blasphemous is one of those games I want to like but it just never really clicked with me. Same for hollow knight. Which is weird because I actually enjoy some of the dark fantasy metroidvanias like Bloodstained, Ender Lilies, and even Lost epic.
Hollow Knight is fine but the final dlc ruined any experience of the game for me. After I beat the Pantheon I uninstalled the game and never looked back@@Jbswe
Eviterna was my personal favourite, honestly one of the easier bosses for me. The lack of eye candy and the repetitive combos made it quite easy for me to get used to him. What most people do wrong fighting him is parrying , it’s much better to just dash and jump his attacks. His slam attacks give you plenty of time to get some damage on him and his ranged attacks give you a chance to spam those blood disks. Apart from that I mostly agree with the ranking, I disagree that the ghost women is a good fight. It relies on overwhelming the player and I just don’t like moving platforms.
Radames and Benedicta were my walls. I got stuck on them due to my low patience I would say. Radames spanked my cheeks without a doubt at least 8 times. Afilaor was my favorite. The atmosphere was chilling and ominous and boy was he creepy. He did take me down 3 times too. Haven’t reached eviterno yet. ☠️
Afilaor has so much personality for a dude who hangs out completely alone in the deepest cave underneath a forgotten, ancient church. He's my favorite too, and I'd like to add that the music, the super creepy background and the eerie area you find him in, completely out of nowhere, really make the fight feel special. On a bonus fun fact, his name "Afilaor" (literally "sharpener") is a common name given to folks who would wander the town with an emery on a little cart, offering their sharpening services. To announce their presence they would blow on a very particular type of whistle that makes the same exact sound you hear when this boss launches his attacks. That little bit of trivia makes this fight 100x better, just the love for old world customs the devs have is very charming. Afilaores are very uncommon these days, but I was very lucky to meet one when I was a kid. A very old man with a very humble cart, but he could sharpen knives so good you'd cut yourself just looking at them. May he rest in peace.
Eviterno should have been my favorite fight. But I have a psychotic hatred for unskippable cutscene before and during boss fights. I got so tired of them that I cheesed the fight and I am not sorry
This makes me think of a certain boss fight in Kingdom Hearts 1 (at least, playing it on PS2). It was one of the hardest fights in the game, so it took me a bunch of attempts. The problem is it had a lengthy unskippable cutscene beforehand that got old very fast because I had to sit through it before every attempt.
@@bobothetroll2873 I felt like that was one of the better bosses in KH1 (not that there are very many great bosses in that game), but the unskippable cutscene sucked so much.
Man, after I saw how much the Prayers wrecked the bosses, I pretty much stopped using them in the boss fights. Personally, I like a little challenge, and the prayers completely negated the challenge of any bosses IMO.
I wish I liked Benedicta more. The arena and design are awesome, but her health pool is pitiful. The debla spell you can buy right outside her area just melts her HP, especially with figures that buff magic damage.
I'd put Eviterno 1st. He was so hard but still fair. I made an intimate connection to the guy. 😂 Edit: you might be missing the hidden room above the elevator in that as spectral cathedral for 100%.
I enjoyed my time with this game (never played the first one) but honestly found myself pretty underwhelmed with it from a combat perspective. After games like Ori, Hollow Knight and Elden Ring (yes, the comparison is there, it definitely tries to emulate it a bit) I can't help but feel like this game under-delivered in almost all of it's gameplay aspects because it was afraid of being too hard. When I'm, CONSTANTLY over thinking a jumping puzzle or a puzzle in the game, then it means it's pulling its punches. Only on a few occasions was I truly pleasantly surprised by what the game threw at me. Only till the Rain of Blood zone did I feel like the platforming was truly interesting. I guess my biggest gripe was the difficulty of the game just feels super stagnant all the way through. If anything it just gradually got easier and easier. I also had this same complaint with Hollow Knight, but Godhome fixed that and made me forgive the game. I will say B2 had some of if not THE best metroidvania progression out of any I've played. It was so satisfying to mark the double jumps on your map, or mark the dash points, and go back to them and collect them all. And how the game path is different depending on which weapon you start with is also a cool interesting take. I think maybe they should have embraced that a bit more.
I do wish the platforming was harder in some areas, thats one thing Hollow Knight really nailed a bit more. I didn’t really mind the difficulty curve but I’ll admit I definitely started dying exponentially less frequently until I reached the final area. I don’t really care about the difficulty of areas too much though to be honest, mostly the bosses which I felt delivered really well. -Alex
@@Cytonox No I agree, even if the bosses weren't always the most challenging, they are INCREDIBLY well designed for a 2d side scroller. I'll definitely go back and play a low health run when NG+ comes out to truly appreciate the boss patterns a bit more.
Yk it’s fucking crazy I got bodied by odon 💀 whereas every other boss here was piss easy for me. Especially sinodo, I was shocked because I did odon then sinodo and I was like… wtf the difficulty jumped down DRAMATICALLY. Yet you guys seem to disagree 😅 (mind you I am playing on hard mode so maybe the stats are different)
Lesmes and Sleeping Ifanta at number 3? You guys crazy. I beat that boss on my first try with no flasks left and couldn't help but be disappointed by how insanely easy it was.
The first game is overall better imo. The vibe isn't the same and the bosses were way too easy. I died alot more in the 2nd game though I will say that. The basic enemy encounters where harder and combat is better in the 2nd but still the og Blasphemous is still better
@@abrahamrangel2326 There's definitely a couple tougher ones but the main reason is that the bosses don't have enough HP considering how much damage reduction we get from rosary beads and the damage output we have from our prayers and weapon skills. I destroyed a good amount of bosses after the first 3 for this reason. I accidentally cheesed the last 2 bosses as well. Give them more HP so that we have to respect them more as a boss because rn they're just glorified super enemies for each level. I don't even remember half of them for that reason. It sucks because the combat is pretty good and it defeats the purpose if I can just tank everything the boss throws with my rosary beads. You have to purposely not use the beads and prayers to have any trouble in the 2nd game.
@@abrahamrangel2326 There's no way you did hitless but said 2 was harder lmao. Like the above said bosses didn't have high HP and with altarpiece introduced helps you deal lots of dmg. The only one I truly structured was Evertino of course. at least 12, or 15 death if I remember. and I didn't cheesed or anything. 2 is wayyy easier.
@@Lynv except i did hitless all bosses in both games and without any damage upgrades either (dealing more damage makes the music not sync with the fight due to bosses starting their second phase earlier if they have one and i like to make cinematic battles) and still think blasphemous 2 had harder bosses, if you think bosses are easy because you went with rosary beads and figure resonaces then congratulations, you used what the game offers you to make it easier and your equipment fulfilled its purpose in the rpg aspect of the game

Regarding afilaor, a comment from another video:
“A piece of folklore for anyone interested in:
The sharpener is a job that, in both hispanic and latino culture, is easily recognizable for his characteristic pan flute; every time there is a sharpener near your neighborhood you will hear his pan flute as it is how they announce their services.
@@daleodorito the spelling afilaor is commonly used?
@@kyrinky I mean, 99% of people would never write "afilaor", but like a good chunk of us in the south will just skip the d entirely while talking in a coloquial environment.
@@daleodorito I just realized you replied to my original comment.
I grew up in Central America, so we also had the afiladores. I had totally forgotten about it as I moved from there about 20 years ago. It wasn’t until I read that original comment that all the flashbacks came rushing back.
Portugal aswell. I still have one that appears every now and then in my street :)
I think I died like 30 times to him so I had a lot of attempts to look for stuff like that lol
my mistake was that I went straight to this boss some how with only 2 potions and the health you have at the beginning of the game, and also no useful magic and short sword it took 10 attempts and a little bit of malding but worth it
I prefer Eviterna. Like the amount of pressure he puts on the player and the fact that his attacks are not delayed.
10:00 "like a shabbat goy but for killing people" is probably the last phrase I'd have expected to hear lmao
I’m glad Lesmes made a similar impression to myself. This game was really phenomenal. The movement. Hands down.
As for my personal ranking, I'd have to go with this:
11. Faceless One, Chisel of Oblivion
10. Svsona, Fermosa Fembra
9. Incarnate Devotion
8. Odon of the Confraternity of Salt
7. Sinodo, Hymn of the Thousand Voices
6. Orospina, Lady Embroiderer
5. Great Preceptor Radames
4. Benedicta of the Endless Orison
3. Lesmes & Sleeping Infanta
2. Afilaor, Sentinel of Emery
1. Eviterno, First of the Penitents
I also could see some homages to bosses in other games in some of these fights.
Like I did for Blasphemous 1, I'll go ahead and rank the main areas of this game from my favorite to least favorite:
1. Two Moons
2. Basilica of the Absent Faces
3. Sacred Entombments
4. Mother of Mothers
5. Crown of Towers
6. Manor of the Embroideries
7. Streets of Wakes
8. The Severed Tower
9. Choir of Thorns
10. Elevated Temples
11. City of the Blessed Name
12. Sunken Cathedral
13. Crimson Rains
14. Aqueducts of the Costales
15. Grilles and Ruins
16. Labyrinth of Tides
17. Beneath Her Sacred Grounds
18. Profundo Lamento
19. Ravine of the High Stones
20. Sea of Ink
21. Repose of the Silent One
Two Moons was easily my favorite area, as I love everything from the layout to the atmosphere to the gimmick.
The game deserves that dedication 🙏
11) Faceless One, Chisel of Oblivion (the obvious bottom bunk, bro literally has 2 attacks. However, he does his job as a tutorial boss/de ruster and he is still not bad at all)
10) Svsona, Fermosa Fembra (also a really cool fight, I had a hard time reacting to her beam attack because the platform you're supposed to hide under was almost blending into the background for me. Only slight irritation, and most definitely a skill issue)
9) Incarnate Devotion (slightly disappointing that this is just Esdras for the most part, but definitely MUCH better than Esdras lol. The platforms aren't random and the attacks feel much fairer. Great spectacle too for a final boss)
8) Odón of the Confraternity of Salt (this is a great boss and this placement is purely personal preference. I hate ads in boss fights. I love everything else about this fight other than the ads. Even still, they're mostly tolerable and aren't too annoying)
7) Sínodo, Hymn of the Thousand Voices (this is what Our Lady of the Charred Visage should have been. Very fun to dodge attacks, an amazing platforming section, and nothing that feels too overtuned to the point of obnoxiousness)
6) Lesmes and Infanta (this was also the first boss I fought after Faceless One, and these guys definitely fed me my own ass. Kinda like how Isidora was also very dependent on positioning, it's the right design philosophy for a 2D gank fight)
5) Great Preceptor Radamés (this was my second of the three regrets, and this guy was awesome. I love the attack where he just throws shards of glass on you. I love that he has bodies on a stick and tries to whack you with it. I love how much space there is in the arena. This was also the boss I beat to get the no damage trophy, and even with that it wasn't super easy)
4) Orospina, Lady Embroiderer (awesome duel. My top 4 is honestly so interchangeable, it could go the way of whoever I fought last pretty much lol that's how good the top 4 are)
3) Afilaor, Sentinel of the Emery (this guy wins in terms of atmosphere. It is so asphyxiating. And the fight itself is just perfect. Great moveset variety, I really like what they did with his multiple phases here. He didn't necessarily get new moves each phase, he just got stronger moves, and since his moveset is already so well designed, it doesn't bother me. Intensity is what this boss is so good at)
2) Benedicta of the Endless Orison (what a set piece this was. Using the level's platforming gimmick in this fight was perfectly utilized. The backdrop of an endlessly falling elevator slaps my nuts so good, and the music is my favorite theme in the game as well. Not a hard fight, but so well designed, memorable, and fun)
1) Eviterno, First of the Penitents and Last Desecrator (this fight was so satisfying to figure out.
Eviterno took you 9 tries only!?
@@Aquiteprolificcommenter yeah man idk what to tell you, his moveset felt super natural to me. That doesn't mean he's easy, I just felt like I was getting into a zone every time I fight him. I don't necessarily think Lesmes and Infanta are easier, but I fought them very early with barely any weapon upgrades and they fucked my tight asshole six ways from Sunday
I AINT READING ALLAT
Bro woke up and decided to write a PhD paper
When talking about Devotion Incarnate, you mentioned Esdras, but did you mean Escribar?
RIIIIIIIIIIII-DIculous!
first time huh?
Svsona was based on a Myth from Sevilla I believe
the little Skull tablet above the Merchant in the Hub town exists in Sevilla and I believe it is meant to serve as tribute to the Story of Svsona
Ingame Svsona was kind of the person who kicked things off with the miracle going to town spreading it´s deformity as she was too obsessed with her beauty, staring at her reflection all day long until the Miracle took the opportunity, manifested, and made all the people that stared into the lake turn into abominations
This is also pretty easy to make work against Eviterno
Edit: This has apparently been drastically nerfed in the latest patch, but you can still do good damage with it instead of being able to completely destroy the boss by repeating this
I felt like boss difficulty didn't warrant the stat boosts provided by Altar Pieces or rosaries, so I did the fights without them. I hope a future patch beefs up the difficulty. New attacks, increased speed, unpredictable attack patterns, etc.
For example, the platforms in the Incarnate Devotion fight should crumble and reappear (not like the usual ones, bit more time before they crumble)
I really hope there will be future patches like the recent one to buff some bosses, beacause they are a little too easy
@zestycrunchman602 well put
ha! you two would probably lose your shit if you come to my country(Uruguay). Afilaor or Afilador is the very old profession of knife sharpener. That flute sound that you hear during the fight is actually the sound they make wile walkling or riding around looking for customers, is the way to let people know that they are in the vecinity.
Finally someone who understands Devotion's fight
Dude when I first played Lesmes kicked my ass so hard I had to back out, do Radames and Orospina, and then come back to the first boss I met after Chisel. I remember saying 'Oh fuck' out loud upon finding out about the 3rd phase
I loved it, I already completed it 100%, so I'm looking for more, It could be nice see you made similar list of games, I will try Moonscars
The best thing about Sinodo is that his old man face quite literally looks like pope Ratzinger.
Woah i didnt know afilaor had an unique death animation in the air

Eviterno is by far the best imo
i somehow loved to die on lesmes cuz his 3rd phase is just so godamn cool!
Well if blasphemous 2 goes the way of the first game they’ll probably add another 5-9 bosses and give the final boss another phase.
Can't wait to play this masterpiece for myself
I enjoyed Orospina a lot! Great parry fight
I’m stuck at 99% completion and I can’t find that last 1% 😭 heyulp!
Afilaor is the most intimidating and eerie boss in the game imo
I watch the the hole game play on TH-cam love it

@@Cytonox yeah evn liked the 4th best boss looks better than the best bosses of 1
I’m not sure if they patched some of these bosses because Odon did a lot more damage to me and I 100% the game so I had all the good beads and prayers.
My biggest gripe with the game was the lack of i-frames after knockback, and the complete lack of consistent things which can be i-framed through.
This is my current top 5, though:
1. Hollow Knight (2017)
2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997)
3. The Messenger (2018)
4. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (2003)
5. Super Metroid (1994)

2. Blasphemous 2
3. Blasphemous 1
4. Axiom Verge
5. Guacamelee
6. Doomblade
7. Guacamelee 2
8. Castlevania Sotn
9. Axiom Verge 2

Hi there. I wanted to say that this video is awesome. I have a friend who will be playing this game soon and he nearly fully completed the first one. I have low vision, so the first game was very difficult and I’m finding that this one is as well. I might reach out and see if there’s anything the developers could do to patch the game to help people like me.

Crazy, okay thanks Jack, buying it now!@@Cytonox
You think Afilaor's sound design is cool? Well, get this: his name and sound design are a reference to the job of ambulant knife sharpeners in Spain (yes that is absolutely a thing). They go around towns offering their services and announcing themselves with the same trill of the pan flute that the boss does in game right before his big slash attack. th-cam.com/users/shorts0F1ScvgZGeA?si=PBQAZJIa853XygLl

The Game Kitchen really have done their homework in including references to Spanish culture, literature and art in this, there's sooooo much
What the hell was that about the 4th face of Sinodo???? I've played the game 3 times already but never seen that phase before 😮
Blasphemous is one of those games I want to like but it just never really clicked with me. Same for hollow knight. Which is weird because I actually enjoy some of the dark fantasy metroidvanias like Bloodstained, Ender Lilies, and even Lost epic.

May he rest in peace.
great story and trivia, thanks for sharing ❗️
Do ye think ye will play ac6 or nah not a game for you?
Not for a little bit, but maybe someday. It was an option on our patreon poll this month!
My suggestion your welcome
Eviterno should have been my favorite fight. But I have a psychotic hatred for unskippable cutscene before and during boss fights. I got so tired of them that I cheesed the fight and I am not sorry
Thats exactly what my (Alex) experience was with him lol. Cool boss but I got sick of the waiting
That was the boss that made me realize how much I hated it@@rpgfan1187
@@bobothetroll2873 I felt like that was one of the better bosses in KH1 (not that there are very many great bosses in that game), but the unskippable cutscene sucked so much.
3:35 galician is not a dialect of spanish, but of portuguese
I wish there was reference to los pollos hermanos
Man, after I saw how much the Prayers wrecked the bosses, I pretty much stopped using them in the boss fights. Personally, I like a little challenge, and the prayers completely negated the challenge of any bosses IMO.
The bosses are a true success ! Too bad that beside eviterno, they don't have any health...
I think that will be fixed with the eventual NG+
@@YEY0806 hope so
I wish I liked Benedicta more. The arena and design are awesome, but her health pool is pitiful. The debla spell you can buy right outside her area just melts her HP, especially with figures that buff magic damage.
I'd put Eviterno 1st. He was so hard but still fair. I made an intimate connection to the guy. 😂 Edit: you might be missing the hidden room above the elevator in that as spectral cathedral for 100%.
great video!! but, to clarify, galician is not a spanish dialect, is a language on its own
I enjoyed my time with this game (never played the first one) but honestly found myself pretty underwhelmed with it from a combat perspective.

@@Cytonox No I agree, even if the bosses weren't always the most challenging, they are INCREDIBLY well designed for a 2d side scroller. I'll definitely go back and play a low health run when NG+ comes out to truly appreciate the boss patterns a bit more.
Interesting I started with Radames lmao
EDIT what?! Sinodo had 4th phase? I dont remember seeing this
Yk it’s fucking crazy I got bodied by odon 💀 whereas every other boss here was piss easy for me. Especially sinodo, I was shocked because I did odon then sinodo and I was like… wtf the difficulty jumped down DRAMATICALLY. Yet you guys seem to disagree 😅 (mind you I am playing on hard mode so maybe the stats are different)
I heard Odon got buffed sometime after launch (perhaps in response to this video, lol), so that could be responsible
6:52 yeah that’s the only thing that the first game did better
Lesmes and Sleeping Ifanta at number 3? You guys crazy. I beat that boss on my first try with no flasks left and couldn't help but be disappointed by how insanely easy it was.
it was easy, but this is a ranking of how much we liked them/how good they are, not how hard they are
Alfilar had me on my ass i cant even lie and he was su h an easy boss i died like 10 times man
A crime what you did to orospina! Didn't even talk about the boss
eviternos placement is a fucking crime and you dident even talk about the sankwokowedia shit
I appreciate another blasphemous fan but ngl I think these opinions are awful. I still liked the video tho
Blasphemous 1 is so much better are you kidding me
Infanta is a little girl
I respect your boss list, but Eviterno is the strongest boss cz everyone died the first time without TH-cam, I say 100 times. Just my opinion
I am not going to subscribe thanks
please do
I’m kind of disappointed they went with like 20 crisantas instead of the crazy religious monstrosities. But otherwise I’m really enjoying the game
I gave you a dislike because eviterno should be no.1. He's literally tougher than all of them.
thank you for watching. this video is based on how good they are, not how hard they are
Joke?
The first game is overall better imo. The vibe isn't the same and the bosses were way too easy. I died alot more in the 2nd game though I will say that. The basic enemy encounters where harder and combat is better in the 2nd but still the og Blasphemous is still better
Played both games, beat every boss hitless and i can say blasphemous 2 has harder bosses
@@abrahamrangel2326 oh yeah that's one of the fun part in rpg. But I thought we were talking about blind playthrough?
No rosary, weapon upgrade and resonance playthrough? Damn you must be Gellot or sth. How many hours are you on in the game?
