I thought the storyline was put together well enough as you talked to NPCs and gathered notes. Titles like Nyctorn and Sepolcri became a bit confusing though. Also, it was unclear to me about the Ethereal and Vanguard Orders and the Federal Era. Anyway, a good synopsis on Reddit and this video helps. I thoroughly enjoyed the game despite lags and crashes on the Switch.

Nice video. Better than most attempts I've seen at piecing together this game's lore. While the plot itself is serviceable, it's clear that the writer's kinda suck at emulating the writing in the game that The Last Faith is clearly trying to be an expy of. Someone on Reddit put it this way: it's like they construct a sentence, use a thesaurus to look for the most flowery synonyms for each word, and then reconstruct the sentence lol. It's a headache to get through. By the way, you didn't mention anything about the Federation, the Federal Era, or the Vanguard Order. Thoughts?
Thanks! Happy to hear you enjoyed! That's a great way of putting it. Another issue is that there's a ton of times where characters say things that I think are supposed to obviously make sense for Eryk or other characters in the world, but WE don't know wtf they're talking about and it's never really explained very well. A good example is when Annabella mentions the "resting place". She says it like we/Eryk know what she's referencing/talking about, but we don't and that term is never brought up again or explained. I *think* it's meant to be the resting place of Junas and therefore the cathedral of the Junas Ministry, but like... Be more clear with what you're saying, dudes. Jeez. You're right. I didn't. My fault! Federation: reviewing the lore really quickly, it seems like the Federation were trying to stop the swell of Cold Ones from taking over Mythringal, which they eventually failed at doing. I could have spent some time talking about it when was talking about the Cold Ones, about how they built weapons to combat them, and eventually failed, but I forgot about the Federation. Whoops. Lol. Just goes to show that I'm not perfect! The Federal Era: I'm less sure about this. Is that an era in which the rulers of Mythingal or Illygarth were a Federation or does it merely refer to the time period in which the Federation was active? If it was the former, there's a number of unanswered questions: what happened to the Federation? Who was/were the leader(s)? Did the Noble Families replace it? Did Laddak destroy it? If it was the latter, well, then it was just the time period in which the Federation was active. The Vanguard Order: I honestly have no clue. Mark seems to be the best source of information about it, but he makes so little sense that I can't really wrap my head around what he's saying. It sounds like they used to be a rival Order, but got absorbed into the Ethereal Order (like Leena). As for "where they linger," I don't know to what he's referencing. Maybe a cut area or one that's coming as DLC? Maybe the passageway into the Junas Ministry? I have no clue. At the very least, Eryk seems to be a follower of the Order since Annabella and Caterina say he has "relinquished himself of that feeble Vanguard Order", but at the same time, if he is, why doesn't he know anything about it? Are they another shadow organization trying to manipulate Eryk into doing their bidding like how Medeya/Annabella/Caterina are doing to him? If so, what are their goals? Who leads them? Why don't we see more of them? It's all too vague, so I cut any references to it. If any new info comes out, I'll definitely do a follow up talking about it though! What about you? Any thoughts on those subjects?
@@SquatchGamingChannel True, true. There are also plenty of grammatical errors so that makes it even harder to parse the dialogue and item descriptions lol. I wish the devs would focus on ironing out those kinks now that the gameplay is in a good state. I read another comment on Reddit about how the Federation may have been the ones that actually created the Nyctorns as weapons, but it got out of hand since they didn't realize the Nycrux was essentially "alive" (I believe it's mentioned in the game that the stuff practically has a mind of its own?). They might have experimented on the Cold Ones and figured out how to weaponize them, but the Nyctorn ended up following Laddak's will or something, perhaps. Who knows? You're on the money about the Vanguard Order.
That's a pretty good theory! I think it's definitely possible, especially given what we see in the game. That's another frustrating part of the lore of the game: for some of it, it does a good job of implying enough about something for you to draw a logical conclusion about the subject, like the Oxnevylles and the Daughters of the Nighttide or the Blackhalls and Nyxaroth, but more often than not, they miss the mark and it just leaves us confused. One of the drawbacks of this method of storytelling though...
This story is just Bloodborne.. The thing I loved about Blasphemous is it’s story and how original it was compared to other souls likes. But this is just Bloodborne, at least Lies of P had a somewhat good story.
I'm not even kidding, playing this made me miss Salt and Sanctuary; the only Metroidvania in my book that did Souls games right. In this game I had about 5 extra hours just trying to grind out materials just so I could respec properly because my playstyle no longer complimented my original build. The game wants _so hard_ to be a Souls game that it forgets it's playing on a Metroidvania body structure. They did not make it that easy to properly acquire the level of currency needed for upgrades, item usage, and materials. One of the "better" farming runs grants about 16,000 when fully upgrading a weapon takes approximately 250,000 currency. You also cannot find upgrade materials from enemies, so there is no currency farming route that coincidentally grants upgrade materials. I understand there's only a handful of weapons in the game, but this adds HOURS of necessary grind in order to get back on your feet after a respec. Instinct in this game has so much potential but is absolutely flattened by the fact that you can't give yourself bullets by any means (save for drops and save points) and the damage output of most the guns requires a 2 bullet shot for the most efficacy; essentially meaning you only get 15 shots for whatever encounter you have planned. Gathering bombs is also an incredible hassle because unlimited storage doesn't unlock until nearly the end of the game. Even ELDEN RING handles it's items better. Using Blunderblade is nice, but once again to fully unlock it's potential you have to spend ammo. At least it can be buffed with dust that has a finite purchase window until the end of the game. :v No, the game devs have an idea for their gameplay, introduced other means of satisfying that gameplay, but ultimately punish you if you don't do things their way.
Dude this game was amazing, i enjoyed every minute. The weapons are so cool and the spells as well. The story looks great as well, just like you said the storytelling is bad. From my first time, reading everything and paying attention, I thought it was about a plague that effected the world and that there was a mad king trying to control everything in the name of a god named Judas. I thought that all the creatures we fought we apostiles or abominations, also understood about the secret order trying to kill the king, I just didn't understand why they wanted me dead (maybe because I was contaminated). I also understood that there were these sisters that were performing a ritual and wanted to usurp the king. But after this storrytelling this is just way better!!!
Still...32:28 it's hard for me to believe that that boss in the highest area of the winters is a boss. I finished him off the first time, I admit that it surprised me but... I felt that I could see his pattern from experience of some boss games similar, without a doubt that boss reminds me of certain bosses from Death Gambits and Grimvalor... And I don't know why it gave the difficulty that many supposedly gave this boss some surmountable attempts as if this were the rookie Malekith himself XD Of all the good videos and I totally agree with the very important negative points, even so I loved the attempt to give it a plot and I already had an idea of how things were going, this game would be if Van Hellsing had a sequel in Soulslike pixel format
It's crossed my mind a couple of times, especially since the devs were adding new content to it all the time, but I never made time for it. Maybe someday in the future! Thanks for the request! And thanks for watching!
@itsgreyhat is it not like Bloodborne? I've never played. I started with Hollow Knight then went to the Ori's and that's when I found Blasphemous and fell in love. I played this game because it was highly suggested since I liked Blasphemous so much and I loved this game too! Problem is I'm almost done and trying to find where to go next. Is Bloodborne similar to this one and Blasphemous at all? Thank you!😊 or if you know another game like this one and Blasphemous, I'd love to hear it!
@@laur131306 bloodborne is amazing but the lore takes a backseat to the gameplay, you have to really search for it and piece it together via npc conversations and item descriptions. I highly recommend it. I’ll also check out blasphemous because I’ve honestly never heard of that game before, so ty for that
Hey Squatch, I think there's something you might be interested in, LISA the Painful and Joyful got a big update, with some new lore and stuff to make videos on, and it's free if you already have the game!
The next one I said I was going to do was Skul: The Hero Slayer, but there's a couple of caveats to that If Katana Zero, Risk of Rain 2, Darkest Dungeon II, and/or Blasphemous II get some kind of DLC or expansion, I'll probably put the Skul video down and work on a video for the DLC of one of those games. The developers of Dead Cells have said that they aren't making any new content for Dead Cells anymore, and I'd like to do a story/lore video for Dead Cells with all of its DLC/content, so that's something I'm kind of working on too. In theory, that would be quicker since I have old resources I can reuse. So that's kind of where I'm at right now TL;DR - Skul: The Hero Slayer and/or Dead Cells with all DLC Content unless DLC for some other game(s) comes out first
Hi so it might not be your cup of tea but i recommend a game called "Pathologic 2" as a game to cover. Its genuinely a extremely underrated masterpiece. I recommend getting the game and just playing the first 30min and if that intro doesnt intriuge you then just refund it but if it even in the slightest does peak your interest then give it a go!

Praise Junas for this video! Loved the game, but it was so hard trying to follow the story down to a T with all the flowery talk and the voice acting was terrible.
Hey Squatch, are you interested of making a lore video of a game title 'Cyber Manhunt'? I really like the story of the game and the hidden lore and connection of characters and their motivations. I hope you see this comment and consider making the video.
I am so sorry for taking so long to reply. I took a quick look at the game (only watched a playthrough of the tutorial), and it looks really interesting. Looks like it has a lot of themes that can apply to our real world which is always interesting. Unfortunately, I won't have time to make a video on it, but I might pick the game up to play myself. It seems *really* interesting! Thanks for the suggestion, man! I appreciate it! And thanks for watching!
Did I dislike it? I would say no. Once I pieced it all together, I thought it was interesting and liked its overall themes. I also enjoy this manner of storytelling in general where you have piece the lore together to gain a deeper appreciation for the story as a whole. I personally didn’t like the unclear and (at times) contradictory wording/dialogue used to tell the story and lore. For instance, with Sepolcri: there are a couple of times in the game that they are called “entities” which I took to mean beings akin to humans or Cold Ones (but with more power), but they’re actually supposed to be the Hearts of Nycrux (at least according to an achievement for the game) which, as far as I know, aren’t entities (I guess they could be, but they don’t act like it unless it’s in a way that we don’t understand, but that just opens more cans of worms). That’s just one example, and I’m probably doing a poor job of explaining it, but it happens at several points in the game. TL;DR - I liked it, but think there’s room for improvement What about you? Did you like it? Did you feel frustrated by the wording like I was?
@@SquatchGamingChannelthank you for clearing that up :) I do like this type of storytelling but I don't even try to piece it together because generally I lack attention to detail. That's why I depend on people like you to fill in the blanks. The way you started the video off made it sound like you disliked the story, but it seems like you disliked the frustrating and contradictory nature of how it was told. Which is more than fair. They definitely could have done it better. Thanks again for your work!
Never even heard of it. I won't have time to make a video on it at the moment, but it doesn't hurt to check it out! Thanks for the recommendation! And thanks for watching!
@@SquatchGamingChannel I mean, maybe I suck at platforming, but I'd try going further into Liturgical Pass, but always fell short of one of the jumps, so I figured that the double-jump from after Manfredd was necessary.
I feel like it does some things well (like world-building and lore) and lacks in other areas (like character development). This makes it fit better in video games (where interactivity and exploration are part of the package) than other media (like books or movies), but it’s not a perfect way to tell a story because things are so missable or easy to misunderstand. It also requires players to *want* to engage with the story in this way, and if they don’t want to do that, it definitely falls flat (and if that’s the case, fun gameplay will help most players to look past their distaste for the storytelling). What about you? How do you feel about it?
@@SquatchGamingChannelits good i ask because I've seen people say exspesly the ones that don't like these games say that there is no story what do you think?

I thought the storyline was put together well enough as you talked to NPCs and gathered notes. Titles like Nyctorn and Sepolcri became a bit confusing though. Also, it was unclear to me about the Ethereal and Vanguard Orders and the Federal Era. Anyway, a good synopsis on Reddit and this video helps. I thoroughly enjoyed the game despite lags and crashes on the Switch.

Great video man but i got a question tho if you don't mind, who do you think is the ghost that was leading Eryk to Esk's eyes?
Of course I don’t mind!
I have no idea. I don’t remember there being any more relating to the ghost. Maybe it was an old servants or partner to Esk?
What do you think?
Thanks for watching!
Really well made vid as always. I’m curious if you played outerwilds? I think its story would really fit your style. Eben if you don’t make a vid about it definitely give it a go.
My wife got it a while back, but I’ve never played it. Heard it was really good though! I haven’t looked into the lore/story too much either, but I think I’ve heard that it would be something that would fit my style.
I don’t currently have the time to dedicate to it right now though. Maybe someday in the future!

Still no gane plus... AHHHHHG!
LET'S GOOO I LOVE THESE!
Thank you bro. I legit thought i might have been a bit on the slow side for not understanding the convoluted a$$ dialogue between characters😂
If this game had a new game plus and some updates like new areas and weapons it would be the goat of metroidvanias
I really hope for a sequel
I finished this game with the true ending and didnt have a single clue on wtf was going ok the entire time lol
No, the game devs have an idea for their gameplay, introduced other means of satisfying that gameplay, but ultimately punish you if you don't do things their way.
And I don't know why it gave the difficulty that many supposedly gave this boss some surmountable attempts as if this were the rookie Malekith himself XD
Of all the good videos and I totally agree with the very important negative points, even so I loved the attempt to give it a plot and I already had an idea of how things were going, this game would be if Van Hellsing had a sequel in Soulslike pixel format
This is great! Ang chance you could make a video for Grime?
It's crossed my mind a couple of times, especially since the devs were adding new content to it all the time, but I never made time for it. Maybe someday in the future!

Hey Squatch, I think there's something you might be interested in, LISA the Painful and Joyful got a big update, with some new lore and stuff to make videos on, and it's free if you already have the game!
Do you mean the Definitive Edition or a different update?
What's your next lore & story Video?
The next one I said I was going to do was Skul: The Hero Slayer, but there's a couple of caveats to that
If Katana Zero, Risk of Rain 2, Darkest Dungeon II, and/or Blasphemous II get some kind of DLC or expansion, I'll probably put the Skul video down and work on a video for the DLC of one of those games.
The developers of Dead Cells have said that they aren't making any new content for Dead Cells anymore, and I'd like to do a story/lore video for Dead Cells with all of its DLC/content, so that's something I'm kind of working on too. In theory, that would be quicker since I have old resources I can reuse.
So that's kind of where I'm at right now
TL;DR - Skul: The Hero Slayer and/or Dead Cells with all DLC Content unless DLC for some other game(s) comes out first
Hi so it might not be your cup of tea but i recommend a game called "Pathologic 2" as a game to cover. Its genuinely a extremely underrated masterpiece. I recommend getting the game and just playing the first 30min and if that intro doesnt intriuge you then just refund it but if it even in the slightest does peak your interest then give it a go!

"leaves a lot to be desired," implies that you didn't like the story. Did you dislike it? JW
TL;DR - I liked it, but think there’s room for improvement
What about you? Did you like it? Did you feel frustrated by the wording like I was?
@@SquatchGamingChannelthank you for clearing that up :)
I do like this type of storytelling but I don't even try to piece it together because generally I lack attention to detail. That's why I depend on people like you to fill in the blanks.
The way you started the video off made it sound like you disliked the story, but it seems like you disliked the frustrating and contradictory nature of how it was told. Which is more than fair. They definitely could have done it better.
Thanks again for your work!

Sounds you made the same mistake I did. Lol. I also wound up at Manfredd before the Burnt Apostate.
@@SquatchGamingChannel I mean, maybe I suck at platforming, but I'd try going further into Liturgical Pass, but always fell short of one of the jumps, so I figured that the double-jump from after Manfredd was necessary.
True, the gameplay was punishing but worth it like a souls-like but the story telling wasn't all that great
Great video ps can I ask you a question

@@SquatchGamingChannelok what do you think of fromsoftware approach to storytelling
