Thanks for the review. It was exactly what I was looking for. Just to be clear, the extra stop just affects the light on your sensor, not the depth of field, isn't it?

Hi, I just wanna give a quick update as I've just received this adapter in the mail few hours ago. And I'm super happy with the performance it gives, adapting the canon 85mm f1.8 on my XT20. It does hunt a bit (similar as seen in this video), but very very doable for portrait. Overall, I'm super happy. Full frame results on a crop body. :) p/s: Eye and face detect works as well as EXIF data
Hi! just to clarify, since the extra stop doesn't affect the depth of field but just the extra light, why do so many people say that it gives you "full frame results"?
Because it increases the field of view and the light gathering. While not exactly the same as a full frame as far as depth of field it will give you similar specs to the markings on the lens
It's a great speedbooster at a great price. I think I hit a bad copy that had the vignette. Others haven't seen it. I will have to order another copy. Cheers and thanks for watching!
@@PhotoGearFun Thank you for the video. You're also not stating/understating the availability of good quality lower cost Canon glass that is simply not made by Fuji. E.g. Fuji 56mm is around $900 whereas Canon 85mm is $400.

That vignette is definitely a big problem! And it is not a soft, easy vignette, it seems to be a hard one to get rid off even with LR or PS and will be a waste of time. @@PhotoGearFun When I watched your Fringer vid, I started waiting for you to make this vid. Yeah I just tried to remove the vignette in LR. It's not easy without cropping. That will make it tough for me to keep this. I don't think it's something they can fix with firmware
Great review. Wouldve appreciated observation of image quality when zoomed all the way in on the 70-200-thats when I start seeing the difference in the Viltrox’s cheap glass. At minimum zoom, you usually wont be able to tell much difference.

Hey Chris I Love my XH-1 and that 18-55 kit lens is one of if not the best kit lenses for any system. I have not test the FX1 so I can't comment on the performance unfortunately. I can assure you that the combo of the Canon lenses and the adapter will not perform the same as native lenses for sure. If you don't depend on your AF to work reliably it may be worth a look otherwise I would stick with native Fuji Lenses. If you have the lenses you mentioned I would say give the adapter a shot worst case you can return it if it doesn't work. Sorry I couldn't give you a definitive answer. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Hello. I returned it primarily because of the strong vignette that was difficult to fix in post processing without cropping the image which negates the value of the extra field of view you get from the speedbooster. The AF wasn't world class but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Hope this help. Cheers.
Hey,nice video, one of the few out there!I ordered mine today and comes tomorrow,I'm planning to use it with the XT3 and tamron 24-70 G2 F2.8. I just need an OS 24-70 (not 16-55 which is actually 16-55 and not 24-82). I hope they will release updates. The vignetting is very minor issue as long the AF works. Why the 24-105 didn't work?they have this lens on the list
Hey Bill thanks for watching. I’m not sure why my 24-105 didn’t work it could just be my copy of the lens and / or the adapter. I hope yours works out it has amazing potential. Cheers
Mhh do you think one of these could be used for any vintage lens? I am thinking of getting this adapter and then putting on it a m42-ef ring adapter so than I can have a speedbooster for my m42 lenses as well. It should work right?
Just tested this adapter. 1. IS seemed to not work in M mode ( only in S and C auto focus modes ) with the 100mm L IS canon lens, which is not that great since I film videos only in manual focus. 2. also sometimes I've noticed that the programmed shutter speed dial had a mind of it's own, it was constantly going down, no mater of the direction of rotations ( camera restart fixed that and also the top shutter dial worked fine) - this was with Canon 16-35 L 2.8 and the 100mm L 2.8 IS. 3 also noticed a strange flickering effect after entering the play menu and exiting it ( so the screen was like turning on and off 2-3 times a second - camera restart also fixed that ). The adapter worked perfectly with full manual, non electric Samyang lenses. Any confirmation or solutions to these issues ? Thanks !
I didn’t really test the IS in manual focus mode but it did seem to work in s and c. I also did notice the shutter speed and aperture seemed to jump around when changing the dials. I didn’t notice the flickering. I would say overall this shows promise that I hope will be realized via firmware updates in the mean time I returned mine. Thanks so much for watching and for the great comment. Looks like you did an amazing job with your testing. Cheers.
@@PhotoGearFun Hi and thanks for the reply ! Yes, I can confirm IS works in S and C, so only together with AF. When you move to M it stops. No idea why. I've just mailed the retailer and Viltrox as well.
Hi! I just received the 2.18 firmware update through the Viltrox support because of some issues on my ef fx2, less hunting and no flickering blackout when you go out of the preview of the images. If you want to test, send me a dm. Cheers.
@@PhotoGearFun I used to use the samyang 14mm t3.1 and the canon 85mm 1.8 and didn´t notice any vignette. If you want to test give me an email and I will send you, if it doesnt well function you always can come back to another firmware.
Hi Phil, thanks a lot for this post, it's a great help in my likely upgrade for work. I currently shoot interior/architectural photography with my fuji xt2 + 10-24mm lens - this gives me approximately a 15mm wide angle (on 35mm FF terms). i've been looking at getting the canon ts-e 17mm (to avoid extra post-processing on the verticals), which - when coupled with this fotodiox speedbooster would, in theory, give me around a 12mm wide angle lens on FF. is this correct? i have no need for fast AF, nor the extra stop - the key thing is getting as much of the "real estate" in one image.
Hello Frederico. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I don't believe this adapter will offer any additional field of view over the stated value of the lens. That 17mm would be 17mm on a full frame sensor and 22.5mm on a Fuji X camera. This adapter will get you the full 17mm of that lens. I may be wrong on this but I'm pretty sure this is the case. That Canon lens does look great for interior/architectural photography though. I would also worry about the vignette that I saw in my copy. Any advantage of the extra field of view is somewhat diminished by the fact that you would have to crop the vignette out. Hope this helps.
I think you have a little typo there.. a 17mm FF would be about 25.5mm on the Fuji apsc. With most speed boosters the focal length is reduced to almost but not quite as wide as the original (slightly longer than 17mm, maybe 18mm or 19mm on the Fuji with adapter)
Nice catch! I did notice some CA with the speedbooster wide open just a bit more than without it. You have to look pretty hard to see it and it's super easy to fix in Lighroom. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks so much! I would check their website to see which cameras it works with. I know it didn't work on my Xh1 put the xpro1 may be suppotted. Cheers and thanks for watching and commenting!
That would be great for xt2 users I really love the idea of this but the execution at least for the xt3 and xh1 are pretty poor. I will keep my eyes on this for sure to see if they fix the issue. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I couldn't really find the information on the viltrox website so I'll just ask here. Does this support the Sigma 18-35mm EF Mount? I currently use the normal viltrox adapter and it kinda works but auto focus is absolutely trash and I can only go down to f2.5 So I'm wondering wether I should sell my Sigma 18-35 or if I should give this speedbooster a try.
Hello. The Sigma 18-35 is a crop sensor lens and this speedbooster is meant for full frame lenses. I would bet you will see a serious vignette with the 18-35 but I'm not 100% sure on that. I know even with my full frame lenses there was a vignette as you saw in the video. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have not tried manual focus for video. I don't really plan to use this for video and for this video I only tested auto focus. I was going to use this for photos and just checked and that vignette showed in the video is not easy to remove. I would have to crop ths shots. I may end up sending this one back.
Hello thanks so much. Yes the sample images in the video all have a vignette. I did use the 70-200 f/4 IS for this test. I didn't really see any difference in the vignette size or strength between the 70-200 and the 85mm f/1.8. I would hope they can update the firmware to address this issue at some point. Hope this helps. Cheers and thanks for watching.
@@PhotoGearFun wow...prompt response...but you mentioned that you suspected you got a bad copy? have u replaced a new one without such vignetting? btw, i tried 85L 1.2 and the aperture reported wrong information and difficult to do a focus.

What happens is that the IS in the video works only for 2 or 3 seconds and turns off getting the lens without stabilization. I tested on 24-105 f4 Canon and Canon 70-200 F2.8 and in both this problem happens. Anyone know how you can help me? Thank you

@@PhotoGearFun I'll try. I have already notified them but I have not had an answer yet. I would like to test firmware version 2.18 but I have no way to receive it. Unfortunately. On the support site you do not. Thank you
Hey Phil great video, just wondering if you ended up getting another copy to see if there was any difference with vignette, there was a recent firmware update on the viltrox that made AF on the xt3 soo much faster and more accurate, about the vignette I don't get any with the ef 50 1.4 but very heavy vignette with the EF 70-200 2.8 mki.
Thanks so much! I haven't yet ordered a new copy I may and if I do I will create a new video about it. Hope this helps. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Hello. Yes the lens info will show up in Lightroom. It won't list Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM but it will list EF85mmf1.3 for the Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens as an example. The Fringer would list Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. Hope this helps. Cheers.
I wish I could test that out but I returned my copy. I may get another one at some point if I see they have fixed the vignette issue I had. Sorry I can't help with that. Cheers and thanks for watching!
I'm sorry I responded to your comment in the TH-cam app but it never posted I guess. You can see some video footage in the beginning of the video it doesn't seem that noticeable in video to my eye. Hope this helps and again sorry for the delayed response.
I would check their website to see if your Sigma art lens will work with this adapter. For me the Fringer Pro works the best but its not a speed booster so you won’t get that extra stop of light or focal reducer but it just works so well as an adapter.
I may be able to post some raw files I don't normally but I will look into it. If you watch the photo comparisons in the video you can see some shots with fringing especially from the 85mm but that has it without the adapter as well. Thanks for watching!
It's my pleasure. Yeah that vignette is not easily correctable sadly. I'm going to return mine but keep my eye on the firmware updates in the off chance they can correct it via firmware. Thanks so much for watching.
@@PhotoGearFun i'm not sure but most likely it is lens' problem.. www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4319994 club.foto.ru/camera/model.php?mod_id=641 ty for review you helped a lot!
@UCu_xxKUXVuNUmlPb4cBPEDA Thanks for the link. I saw vignetting on both the 85mm and the 70-200 so it seems it may be more related to the adapter but it could be that both of the lenses have this issue with a focal reducer.
Hello yes I think it is. It is smoother and doesn't seem to step like the Viltrox. They are both good for the price. The Fringer is more expensive so that may prevent some folks from buying. At one $400 it is pricey. Thanks so much for watching!
Nice video! Can you try shooting outdoors with it? Also in backlit situations where sun is in the frame. It would be good to see how the IQ is affected by the viltriox glass. With some focal reducers, theres ugly artifacts like a white spot when .
I'm not 100% sure but it appears to in my testing. Their website doesn't specifically mention it, sorry I can't give you a definitive answer on the IS. You can reach out to them on Facebook and ask they may answer there. facebook.com/viltrox.official/ . They did answer my question just keep in mind they are in China so there is a 12 hour time difference in US Eastern time. Hope this helps and thanks so much for watching.
I tested it on 2 of the 3 Canon EF lenses I have. They both showed the vignette. The 24-105 lens didn't work at all with the adapter. If you watch the photo comparisons you can see the level of the vignette they both seem about the same to my eye. I am hoping they can fix that issue with firmware but I don't think they can. I only plan to use this for photos and I edit all of my photos so that won't be a huge issue for me. Thanks for watching! Hope this helped.
I just got this a couple of days ago. Tested on ef50mm f1.8 and I don’t have any vignetting or whatsoever. So far so good aside from once in a while it hunts in focusing. But I just turned it off and on and its back to proper focusing. It’s on xt2 by the way. Image quality is good., I cant see any difference from my xf lens.
I'm sorry I didn't think to do that in my testing. I have returned the into since it didn't really work well on my xt3 and didn't work at all on my xh1. Cheers and thanks so much for watching!
That is a great question. I suppose they think that may hurt their lens sales but who knows what they are thinking . Thanks for the comment and for watching!
does it not work on X-H1 ?? really ? I just bought it at online shop, and their spec said it work on X-H1. if I saw your review earlier , maybe I don't buy this one.
Hello there. I can only say it didn't work with my xh1. Since you ordered it maybe give it a shot? If you do please let me know if it works out. I hope it works out this adapter shows great promise. Cheers thanks for watching and commenting!
My testing showed that the sharpness was about the same as with the lens only, maybe a very slight drop in sharpness. My only real concern is the vignetting I saw. Hope this helps. Cheers.
I can confidently say you don't need this booster to get full frame results. Unless you switching systems and need to adapt your existing lenses, you don't need this. Get Fuji glass instead. Trust me 👍
I agree Fujii makes amazing glass and I have some great Fuji lenses but like you said there are others that have Canon glass that they may want to use on their Fuji. That Fuji 18-55 is my favorite kit lens. Cheers!
@@PhotoGearFun Yeah mate! Mine too. Almost so that I don't see a need to get the 16-55mm 2.8. I instead spent the cash on a 24mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2. I recently switched from an 80d and I'm really enjoying this camera!
Looks like you have some great glass. I don't shot portraits much but that 56 f/1.2 is an amazing lens. I grabbed the 16mm f/1.4 and that lens just about never leaves my Xh1. That kit 18-55 almost never leaves my XT3. I do have the 10-24 I use a ton as well.
The 10-24 is much more versatile but its only f/4 so that may come into play for real estate but you can get some good high ISO shots with the Fuji. I would personally go with the 10-24 unless you feel you really need the extra stops of light.
Sent mine back, useless for stills, it produced chronic vignetting with a Canon 70-200 2.8 at all settings and all focus distances, not just a slight darkening of the corners but jet black with hardly any fade at all, such a shame as the centre was nice and crisp You will lose at least 30% of the pixels/resolution when cropping out the vignetting, you can't just lighten the corners as there's zero detail there
Thanks for the comment. I did notice the vignette on both of the lenses I tested. I'm going to see how easy it is to get rid of it in Lightroom. I thought that vignette was possibly an xt3 issue what body did you use it with?
5 ปีที่แล้ว +2
Yes that vignette seems a hard edged, problematic one. And if you crop to get rid of it, why have that extra field of view :)
Right there is no physical change in the diaphragm. I just figured I would have a look to see if there was some sort of Voodoo Magic going on 😁. Thanks so much for watching!
The comparison in the video is not correct, because objects are different sizes. You have to get closer to achieve the same framing. That will change perspective and bokeh. Of course, if you just zoom in with variable focal length lens it doesn't change perspective, that's just the same as cropping.
Hello thanks for your comment. I did my best to match framing but actually moving the camera not just zooming in. I realize they were not exact on the framing but I did my best. The video was really made to show field of view differences and images quality using the speed booster. The bokeh thing was just an aaide and not meant to be a scientific test. Cheers
Did you have your camera on tripod? If yes, than allrighr, if not, than a speed of 1/60 is too slow. And you know that boke will be same, right? Cause you you just crop (zoom) on a second photo. It is all right. But if you making some kind of review please educate yourself on this topic. But still thank you for your effort! =)
Thanks for your feedback. The camera was on a tripod and I didn't think there would be a difference in bokeh. I assure you I am very well educated in photography and videography but thanks for asuming I'm not.I know all about the reciprocal rule for shutter speed. I assume you had good intentions with your comment but it comes off as very arrogant. It's all good either way thanks for watching.
I assumed you were looking in difference of boke in terms of shallower depth of field but you were really looking on some changes in boke like swirlines or any other "artifacts" with speedbooster, right? And yes, in this case I really came out like an arrogant db. Please accept my apology!
It's all good. I was just looking for any different bokeh qualities and I really didn't see any of note. Maybe they were slightly different. No worries about your comment I think we can lose intent in comments on TH-cam. I'm sure if we chatted in person maybe over a drink we would have a great conversation.
I'm sure you're right! Do you have any experience with other speedboosters for fuji? If yes, will be glad to see a new video on this topic on your channel!
Thanks! The only other speedbooster I know of for Fuji is this Metabones adapter. Since this is self funded channel that is a bit too expensive at this point. If I can find a deal I may grab one. Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks so much! Cheers
What about the other Sigma lenses ! Like the Sigma 85mm and the Sigma 105mm as well as the Sigma 135mm tested with the Fuji XT3 or XT4 ?
Thanks, I've been waiting for a review on the EF-FX2. Did you try eye AF too? Hopefully AF speed improves with firmware updates from Viltrox and Fuji.
You're welcome. I will try eye AF and get back to you but I would guess it will work just fine. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Finally I see a review. I have the adapter but having problem changing aperture. Am i the only one?
I had the same problem with my xt3. You set it with the front dial in many cases. I had customized my front dial to control ISO, once I reset that I could change aperture. This may help in your case I hope it does. Thanks so much for watching!
@@PhotoGearFun The prob is my front dial is for aperture alrdy. The adapter is able to change aperture for the 100mm f2 but nt for my ef 17-40mm f4L. Both are supposed to be compatible:/
Oh I see. That stinks. As I noted on the review I couldn't get the 24-105 to work. I guess they will need some firmware update for this.
I was thinking about buying XH 1 and viltrox fx1 and canon 50 1.4, 85 1.4, and fuji native 18-55 kit. Maybe an 35mm canon too..
What you think?
Switching from canon 80D..
Waiting for ya rply
Cheers.

Anyway thanks for the reply
I saw you said you returned it. Was it just because of autofocus perfomance or other issues? If i just use manual focus would you recommend?
Hello. I returned it primarily because of the strong vignette that was difficult to fix in post processing without cropping the image which negates the value of the extra field of view you get from the speedbooster. The AF wasn't world class but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Hope this help. Cheers.
@@PhotoGearFun Ok. Thank you
Hey,nice video, one of the few out there!I ordered mine today and comes tomorrow,I'm planning to use it with the XT3 and tamron 24-70 G2 F2.8.
I don't see why it wouldn't with manual focus. I assume that vintage lens is manual focus right? If so I think it should work. Cheers.
@@PhotoGearFun Yes, those are manual focus
I think you should be good to go then
Just tested this adapter.

Thanks so much for the offer. Did you have a vignette before the firmware update?
@@PhotoGearFun I used to use the samyang 14mm t3.1 and the canon 85mm 1.8 and didn´t notice any vignette. If you want to test give me an email and I will send you, if it doesnt well function you always can come back to another firmware.

Kevin Jay hey I need ur help
@@lisonvarughese4666 Tell me.
Thanks yeah it was a typo. Cheers!
Notice the chromatic aberration on the Viltrox @ 6:50 in the top left.
Nice catch! I did notice some CA with the speedbooster wide open just a bit more than without it. You have to look pretty hard to see it and it's super easy to fix in Lighroom. Thanks for watching and commenting!
it works on a fuji xpro1? great video
Thanks so much! I would check their website to see which cameras it works with. I know it didn't work on my Xh1 put the xpro1 may be suppotted. Cheers and thanks for watching and commenting!
Any update on the X-H1 performance? Have Viltrox made a software update that made it work?
Sadly I don't know I returned my copy so I can't test it. Sorry about that. I would check their website or Facebook page to see if there is an update.
Maybe it'll work better on the X-T2 I guess? Been dying to see this review!
That would be great for xt2 users I really love the idea of this but the execution at least for the xt3 and xh1 are pretty poor. I will keep my eyes on this for sure to see if they fix the issue. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@PhotoGearFun thank you! hope it'll get better after future firmware updates.
@@PhotoGearFun right now af performance is sadly less than ideal for sports/event

I’m not sure actually I don’t think I tested with the ef-s lenses and I ended up returning the speed booster
You'll get vignetting
@@PhotoGearFun no good for you then
With adapter looks like it uses contrast based autofocus :)
I couldn't really find the information on the viltrox website so I'll just ask here. Does this support the Sigma 18-35mm EF Mount? I currently use the normal viltrox adapter and it kinda works but auto focus is absolutely trash and I can only go down to f2.5
So I'm wondering wether I should sell my Sigma 18-35 or if I should give this speedbooster a try.
@@PhotoGearFun Oh, thanks for clarifying this. I'll definitely sell my Sigma lens then.
Do you also have the problem that in manual focus for video, the lens IS stops working?
I have not tried manual focus for video. I don't really plan to use this for video and for this video I only tested auto focus. I was going to use this for photos and just checked and that vignette showed in the video is not easy to remove. I would have to crop ths shots. I may end up sending this one back.
@@PhotoGearFun Yeah I dont have this problem with the vignetting!

I didn't really see any difference in the vignette size or strength between the 70-200 and the 85mm f/1.8. I would hope they can update the firmware to address this issue at some point.
Does the Canon lens name appear in lightroom when used with the speedbooster?
Cheers.
I wonder how the AF-C is improved for video with the new 3.0 firmware update on the x-t3?

Did u try the new viltrox firmware yet ver. 2.26
Sorry I have not. I ended up returning my adapter.
Would you recommend to use this adapter with the Sigma ART lenses?
I would check their website to see if your Sigma art lens will work with this adapter. For me the Fringer Pro works the best but its not a speed booster so you won’t get that extra stop of light or focal reducer but it just works so well as an adapter.
Photo Gear Fun thanks :)
I have the Fringer with the XT-3 and the Sigma 105mm f1.4. It’s fantastic!
Can you post 4K/Raw photos for us to look that ?
Does it have purple fringing with Adapter ?
I may be able to post some raw files I don't normally but I will look into it. If you watch the photo comparisons in the video you can see some shots with fringing especially from the 85mm but that has it without the adapter as well. Thanks for watching!

@UCu_xxKUXVuNUmlPb4cBPEDA Thanks for the link. I saw vignetting on both the 85mm and the 70-200 so it seems it may be more related to the adapter but it could be that both of the lenses have this issue with a focal reducer.
Fringer is better in af on video?
Hello yes I think it is. It is smoother and doesn't seem to step like the Viltrox. They are both good for the price. The Fringer is more expensive so that may prevent some folks from buying. At one $400 it is pricey. Thanks so much for watching!

Does you have vignetting on every lense?
I tested it on 2 of the 3 Canon EF lenses I have. They both showed the vignette. The 24-105 lens didn't work at all with the adapter. If you watch the photo comparisons you can see the level of the vignette they both seem about the same to my eye. I am hoping they can fix that issue with firmware but I don't think they can. I only plan to use this for photos and I edit all of my photos so that won't be a huge issue for me. Thanks for watching! Hope this helped.

I didnt have vignetting for my ef 100mm f2 (i stopped it down to check)
I just got this a couple of days ago. Tested on ef50mm f1.8 and I don’t have any vignetting or whatsoever. So far so good aside from once in a while it hunts in focusing. But I just turned it off and on and its back to proper focusing. It’s on xt2 by the way. Image quality is good., I cant see any difference from my xf lens.
Have you tried shooting in 4:3 or 1:1 aspect ration with Viltrox? It should help with the vignetting. Let me know.

what's about the sharpness? i would use it on my sigma art 24 1.4 for astrophotography. Thanks in advance
@@PhotoGearFun Man! That's exactly what's on my list next. Would you advise I look at tbe 10-24mm or 16mm 1.4? I do real estate video and photography.
The 10-24 is much more versatile but its only f/4 so that may come into play for real estate but you can get some good high ISO shots with the Fuji. I would personally go with the 10-24 unless you feel you really need the extra stops of light.
Sent mine back, useless for stills, it produced chronic vignetting with a Canon 70-200 2.8 at all settings and all focus distances, not just a slight darkening of the corners but jet black with hardly any fade at all, such a shame as the centre was nice and crisp
You will lose at least 30% of the pixels/resolution when cropping out the vignetting, you can't just lighten the corners as there's zero detail there
Thanks for the comment. I did notice the vignette on both of the lenses I tested. I'm going to see how easy it is to get rid of it in Lightroom. I thought that vignette was possibly an xt3 issue what body did you use it with?
Yes that vignette seems a hard edged, problematic one. And if you crop to get rid of it, why have that extra field of view :)
There is no difference in the bokeh. There is not supposed to be difference in the boken because the aperture of the lens does not actually change.
