Any product that belongs to the realm of art cannot to be described as "worth" or "not worth". When you consider it beautiful and are willing to pay, it is worth it. Some person says that a Gibson with the broken head glued up always sound better, and some person thinks that the quality of PRS's are so stable that they sound all the same, that's bad. Then what can you say? For me, I think a Gibson is never worth it because I live in poverty and can't afford one, but that doesn't keep me from dreaming to own one.
I recently saw one of these in a local guitar shop in my area that had a tv wheat finish and tried it out. I was definitely surprised at how lightweight it was as well as its smoothness with the satin finish. It definitely played better than most satin guitars I’ve played prior. The only thing keeping me from really wanting it isn’t really the price actually. I’m just personally not that good with single cut guitars as opposed to double cuts which is not limited to Gibson. As much as I like Les Pauls getting up to the higher frets is my Achilles heeI with those guitars unless I was every able to afford one of the Axcess models or even a regular modern. As a result I tend to lean towards SGs.
This is very much like a single cut SG in weight. The SG upper access is so great compares to any gibson single cut to be sure. The single cuts have their place.
I like this better than the Studios and the "Tribute"-style guitars. The Modern feature set works better with lower end guitars that don't necessarily require binding to look good.
I like satin finishes but I'm not crazy about open pore. Feels like I'm going to get a splinter from the neck. 😂 I kinda like these guitars though. If they were closer to $1,000 I'd be more inclined to buy one.
Got an LTD EC1000 in same body style - Seymour Duncan pickups, locking tuners, stainless steel frets, tonepros bridge and tailpiece etc - for $1000 with the hard case included. Plays and sounds amazing. Gibson is crazy trying to sell this at that price point given the outstanding alternatives that are available now.
Ive been around the block in terms of guitar options and I always end up back with a LP, or LP-like guitar. I'm currently using an LTD EC but i'd gladly switch back to Gibson with this lite. The only downside I see is the lack of coil tap/split options at that price point.
Guitars are all marked up $100-$300 more than they were. Gs mini now $500 instead of $400, martin backpacker was $180 amd now is $300, taylor academy series was $500 and now $800…..we are getting less value in general so when these companies offer even less and increase the price, how is anyone gonna want to buy? I still believe martin, taylor, squier, and yamaha are worth their prices accordingly but other companies need to step up on QC and what they offer
Seems like just a different version of the Studio in different colors. Sounds good though, Ive always liked the 498/490 pick ups. Still sounds like a gibson.
Hardwired cool kind of helps explaining the cost plus the veneer on the headstock helps keep the in place (I don't think all Gibsons have a notch for the nuts) the Grovers are a plus and the neck being on the wide side as you observed string spacing is critical when they reach the area of the pickups, the strings really should drape over the pole pieces center. Plus the width creates a margin on the side of the neck where one might experience pull off. All in all not bad
I'm not 100% sure, but maybe the PCB wiring harnesses are to big/thick to fit in a slimmed down LP? Might also explain the lack of coil splitting, those push/pull pots might not fit in there either
I love it. I have a special that is a bit too heavy at times and I don't want to buy into another back breaker, this one fits the bill. I like that satin type open pore finish as well. Mini grovers will get replaced 1st thing but otherwise it's a great little guitar. Even at that price, which is high, I think it gets a green light.
@@sgt.grinch3299 Sarge, so good to hear from you. 👍😉 Thank You for the well wishes Sir. Yes, all is well. I'm so busy with work these days, I still look forward to Austin's daily content when I can.
For 950 I would grab one. Add the axcess cutaway, I’m in at 1000, add the exp headstock, I’ll pay MAP! Epiphones cost this nowadays, the market is upside down.
These look fantastic for someone like a teenager wanting a nice, serious guitar they can keep forever. But they're just too expensive, same as the new higher-end Epiphones. I don't know why anyone would spend so much on those, or this, when they can find a used Les Paul Studio or perhaps a Classic for about the same price.
I think this thin LP will appeal to some players, but the price is much too high imo. If this were a Studio Lite or Faded Lite and sat under $1k, I think I'd understand. But considering the choices you have at $1500, even just for single-cuts, I can't imagine why someone would choose one of these over a Schecter or ESP or even a Harmony.
So as a guy who grew up playing the Epiphone Les Paul 100 which was a thinner LP offering from Epiphone this guitar, now that I've had it a few days? really reminds me of what Gibson woulda did with the LP100 had it been under their house instead of Epiphone. I like the slim body and satin finish of mine and my trusty LP100 is now my backup axe for gigging with the rock band.
That’s the first time I’ve heard of the Epi Greeny being described as a better deal than another guitar. Though yeah I’d agree tbh, the Greeny is just better spec’s and even has a Gibson headstock.
Give me a Gibson LP Studio, without giving me a Gibson LP Studio. This. It's basically the same in it's basic sense. No binding. Screen print Gibson logo. 490R 498T set. The only difference aside from model colors, is the matching headstock color and thinner body/carve. They honestly should rebrand it as a Studio Lite, because it's initial name sounds more higher class than it is. All in all, decent no frills working man's model essentially. But as you said, at $1500, you really aren't far off from a full Studio, or even a proper SG that has neck binding.
The Original collection is the Classic line of guitars that Gibson is known for in the current era with classic appointments while the Modern line are the same guitars with more modern appointments and tricks. Custom Shop is more Boutique niche guitars for the high end market.
I have a paul ii and its a great guitar, while also being a superb modding platform! Not sure I'd say that they're unwanted on the used market.. the challenge is that everyone thinks that they can get like $2 grand for them... I'm keen to see what the new lite is like when it hits the stores here in AU
I Thought I might not like it at first. But I actually kind of like this model now that I have seen it. I love the color and I love the matching headstock. I like the fact that it's a stripper model with the dot inlays too. I think I could live without the binding too. My best friend's first good guitar was a used Les Paul studio I believe probably from the 1980s. I'm figuring that because he bought in the early 1990s. It was a pearl white color and dot inlays possibly even an ebony fretboard. It was a cool guitar and his workhorse for many many years. I could see myself buying one of these. If I was in the market for another guitar and wanted a different kind of Les Paul.
I actually think Gibson knocked it out of the park on this one. Keep the colors coming, play around with pickups. Maybe a model that sells a lot of units.
AMS used to create this guitar as a Les Paul Classic Lite. Now that had 57 Classic Pickups and a flame maple top available in black or burst for $2K. So this with stripped down paint and different pickups, I think seems fair. I think it being around the same price as a SG special seems right to me. SG Special does give fret binding. I am really on light guitar kick, so for me, this is a good Les Paul option. Epiphone muse is probably a good option, sure you could find Les Paul types for less. Michael Kelly has a light version for less with Seymour Duncans in it. I will say, Gibson pickups usually sound better than the lower priced options - unless they have Duncans or whatever.

NEEDS Binding to set it off...especially at the ambitious price.
They should have kept the block inlays. Otherwise, I'd rather have a studio. If I wanted a Melody Maker I'd get that.
I like satin finishes but I'm not crazy about open pore. Feels like I'm going to get a splinter from the neck. 😂 I kinda like these guitars though. If they were closer to $1,000 I'd be more inclined to buy one.
Exactly
You ain’t gonna get a splinter 😂
I like the colors but a bit expensive!
I am of the opinion that no matter how nice the finish, a pick guard helps a guitar look better. That is, my opinion.
Is the polishing cloth for wiping the string off after playing rather than polishing the guitar
I think the sound range from it would be versatile for any music genre
Got an LTD EC1000 in same body style - Seymour Duncan pickups, locking tuners, stainless steel frets, tonepros bridge and tailpiece etc - for $1000 with the hard case included. Plays and sounds amazing. Gibson is crazy trying to sell this at that price point given the outstanding alternatives that are available now.
GIBSIN SUUUUUUCKS...ESP/LTD RULES
better yet get a used LTD EC1000 for $500-600
I dig those 2014 melody makers. I got lucky and bought the tv yellow for around 500 bux when they first dropped
For the price, it should come with a hard-shell case.
For the price, it shouldn't be half-baked and ill-finished. No type of case is going to make this guitar worth $1,500
So should the Studio. It comes with a $149 gig bag. A Gibson hard shell case is only $200. For $50, it makes a difference!
Ive been around the block in terms of guitar options and I always end up back with a LP, or LP-like guitar. I'm currently using an LTD EC but i'd gladly switch back to Gibson with this lite. The only downside I see is the lack of coil tap/split options at that price point.
You brought your chops! If I needed another LP I would consider this one. Thanks for your efforts.
The only feasible selling point to these things is comfort and no nick dive. Otherwise, I would say, just get an SG Standard.
Hurray got the Inverness Green! What a gorgeous finish. Thanks for the review Trogly!
Agree--pretty much a The Paul II from '96-'97 with a satin finish and different colors with a matching headstock.
Reminds a bit of the early 90s les paul studio LITEs those were 7 pounds and had am actual full finish they are so nice
I like it…I like simple workhorse guitars👍
Seems like just a different version of the Studio in different colors. Sounds good though, Ive always liked the 498/490 pick ups. Still sounds like a gibson.
Holy crap Trog got some licks!!
I gotta The Paul 2 guitar and I have owned it for 25 years
Just got one of these in the TV wheat finish
I love the 498/490 pickups
Guitars and Case prices both went up ! I did snag some good black Friday deals 👍
I had thought that too, but looking at it and knowing the SG Standard has a pcb... I just don't think it is the case
@@Trog maybe it’s a long shaft vs short shaft thing?
looks like the 2014 les Paul melody maker model
Smaller "Goddess" style would be OK.
IMHO, it would be popular to offer these guitars with a 25.5" Scale Length and single or double P90 pickups.
Greetings HK. I pray you and the family are well. Great to see you Sir.
@@sgt.grinch3299 Sarge, so good to hear from you. 👍😉
Thank You for the well wishes Sir.
Yes, all is well. I'm so busy with work these days, I still look forward to Austin's daily content when I can.
Im sad to see the tributes go but I get why there cant be a $1300 gibson when epiphones are now peaking at $1500
For 950 I would grab one. Add the axcess cutaway, I’m in at 1000, add the exp headstock, I’ll pay MAP! Epiphones cost this nowadays, the market is upside down.
I was trying to buy a used standard lite. Good god please don't let this video raise the prices.
These should have a better headstock angle and a scarf joint, maybe some stainless steel frets too, then it would be modern
Cool idea in theory but man I hate the color offerings :/
Im betting this is the "replacement" for their LP special tributes that were at like a 899-999 price point
It reminds me of the hondo ii guitars from the early 80s. The did some in very similar colours.
Do they stay in tune?
For that price you could get a signature custom Epiphone LP like a greeny and it will have a hard shell case
Kind of like it I'd a liked a more gloss but it's probably because I'm old school.
Wasn't Adam Jones saying he likes his Les Pauls heavy because it contributes to the tone?
Another Gibson model that has the same thin body is the Les Paul CM
