My Les Paul studio in 1999 was $1300 CAD. I’ve thought about buying a new Les Paul for years but the price has turned me away every single time. Their prices are absolutely ridiculous.
My favorite Les Paul i ever had was a 96 wine red studio. I miss that guitar, but when you get to the heroin stage of rock stardom, but not the rock star part, you sell stuff for it. Stay away from drugs kids
Gibson and fender are all over priced. Van Halen pieced together a partscaster and used it for years. If it wasn’t for credit cards and financing these guitars would just hang the walls.
@cromBumny you can buy any guitar and spend the same number of hours. It used to be that the studio was the entry point for Gibson Les Paul ownership. Now they're charging Standard money. No way a Studio should be £1600, I don't know how they can justify it, I also don't know who can justify paying it, it's literally cheaper to buy a second hand /proper/ Les Paul (Standard). Also, Say this from the position of owning multiple Les Paul's including a '59. I can see the Studio line failing again and them pulling it at this price point.
People hate the pricing but fender and PRS show us how much money they can make off bolt-on designs with no binding. Regardless if you care for nitro, binding, and set necks or not… they take way longer to make. Yet bolt on designs are more streamlined. Especially on the fender end. Yet people pay over $1.4k+ for an American fender. My disappointment is the coil splits suck. A picky reason but I’d prefer the coil splits to be annoying icepicky and use the tone knobs to dial back than that garbled mess in it.
Gibson has a lot of debts. That's a better explanation for those crazy prices. And it's not inflation only. For the past 7 years they sold their guitar almost a 100 bucks more each passing year.
Gibson Make better pickups than the BB Pros . 57 classics BB1 BB2 BB3 and at this price point they should have better pickups. I vote BB1 for the neck and BB3 for the Bridge .
My $500 dollar Epi has binding and coil splitting. That’s not a high end feature anymore because it’s on the “affordable” brand. I can’t find a new Gibson solid body for under $1500. Even the light weight modern is $1500 and it’s all mahogany, dot fret markers, no coil split, no binding and it doesn’t have BB pro pickups. The prices are insane
I bought mine back in 1996 also in wine red. It’s been only like a year since I changed all black hardware to creme hardware just like this one and I love the look of it. Another thing (I don’t recall them saying or mentioning that older studios don’t come with neck binding (like mine). I see these new ones that do come with neck binding. I paid $899 for my studio.
I bought a blueberry burst a few days ago. My justification for the price only really came from realizing that i spent more then that on my life on trying to budget do what these things are designed for.
I’m pretty sick of people complaining about price. You want cheap, buy your harley bentons and shut up. You want gibson, then PAY UP and shut up. Either way. Stop complaining that gibsons got more expensive when literally everything costs more. Why should guitars stay at 20 years ago prices just so you can say “back in my day these were cheaper”? So was bread and milk, and gas, and wood; and electronice. Gibsons supposed to pay more and lose profits? You guys clearly don’t understand economics
They're always a compromise, but if you need something like a single coil tone live and want to play your humbucker guitar.... I wish they would make a Les Paul model with a P90 in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge.
I like the binding-less Les Paul look on a lemon or honey burst - something that lets the wood come through a little more. It’s crazy because the US price actually feels significantly cheaper than the UK price adjusted for exchange rate…
May as well just get an SG Standard at that price. Same price except you get the flagship version of the guitar instead of the less-expensive compromise version.
@@J.D.... I don't know, about any Gibson sounds nice to me, very Rock, blues genre inspired, hot or not, all of them sounds like Gibson...... Only speaking on what I heard on TH-cam videos, through macbook speakers, I haven't plugged in my monitor speakers...
SGs are underrated and better value IMO, as long as you don't mind a little neck dive. Bought a pelham demo standard from the Demo Shop for $1099 a few years back.
A sg standard is like a les paul studio with half the body missing, not at all more guitar. If you like SG's its fine but its like getting a deluxe mustang instead of a standard strat but you want a strat.
So this new re-released studio is 1500 and an Epiphone with the same specs I.E same headstock same pickups is also around 1200 to 1500. The epiphone also comes with a Harrdcase.
I think these look great! I like one at Sweetwater and will likely go ahead and get it. I have a Classic, a Tribute, and 2 Deluxe’s, so a Studio would be different enough to justify it, right? 😊
Been playing for 20 years and have ALWAYS wanted a Gibson les paul ever since playing an LP studio at our high school talent show in 2007. Fast forward to 2021. I was cranking out overtime because of the pandemic and could finally justify pulling the trigger on an LP studio so I started to look around only to find that same year they raised the price to $1599. So instead of immediately pulling the trigger on one like I intended on doing before I saw the price increase, I shopped around in the $1000-$1600 price range instead. I ended up finding more value in the cheaper LTD EC1000 and took it home that day instead of the Gibson. Gibson is pricing themselves out of the market for normal blue collar workers.
Bound neck looks awesome on the Studio. Back when I first became aware of the Studio, around 1993, they came in two nat finish colors, wine red and black. I think they were also something like $700 US. About that time an American Tele or Strat was around $750 or $800. Things have definitely changed a lot in those 30 years. Obviously the prices are significantly higher, but the appearance and bells and whistles in those Studios are a fair bit greater, too.
I have a 2016 studio + ice tea burst with coil split, db boost used as off switch with no battery, and I added the green mod. It's heavy af but i love it.
I have a Wine red studio which I bought in the 90s for around £600 brand new , still got it still play it and I suppose I got lucky with it being a good Gibson Guitar
I dont have a problem with ith the price if its well mate. The issue is that Gibson right up to Murphy lab are just sloppy. As a guitar luthier im usually underwhelmed by gibsons whem i work on them, but occasionally a special one does cross my bench. For me though, i would go near one these days but each to their own and if you love them, then enjoy them
I think these Studios are cool guitars and I don't _necessarily_ have an issue with the price... Thing is you can get so many incredible guitars second hand in that range (Suhrs, PRS core, MusicMan etc...), or, you could go for a used Studio and pick those up half the price of these, which for a shopper on a budget who'd love one of these, makes way more sense. Love the jams in this vid though!
Should have called it 'Studio Pro' or some other marketing BS name. And give us a true studio, without coil tap, no bound neck, satin finish over solid color, for 1,000-1,200.

Reminds me of the les paul tribute model with the studio electronics which is cool :) we've needed one of the usual sunburst finishes on a studio for a while now
I sold a Gibson Les Paul studio and one of the reasons was the coil tap was such a dull sound that I thought it was possibly faulty. Watching this confirms that it is just an odd sound. PRS split/tap their humbuckers so much better in my opinion
Described as "no frills", but the Studio has coil-splitting, weight relief (which involves a little more time on the CNC), fretboard inlays instead of simple dots, and as far as I can tell, fret end nibs. Surely these could all have been removed (including the neck binding), to make it properly affordable.
@@1man1guitarletsgo $30 is way low when you figure the added labor for the gloss finish and the neck binding, plus the pickup upgrade. Builders make $40K and up for Gibson, so that's approx $20/hour each at minimum. Plus you're paying the retail markup, not just Gibson's direct cost. Guitar stores aren't selling these for no profit (and they shouldn't).
I get people complaining about the pricing, but a Standard in the US is like $2,800-$3,000, so by comparison a $1,600 studio is quite a bit cheaper. Not saying I want to spend the money on either one, but it does make the studio seem like a significant better value for a USA made LP single-cut.
I bought the wine red studio roughly 5-6 years ago, after trying every Les Paul in the shop (up to $12k) The tone from the studio beat them all easily, and the sound gave a far superior creamy feel. Sometimes you just find a diamond.
İt's great that the Studio is back. It makes sense. Though, Take away the coil tap, the binding on the neck and the crwon inlays and lower the price to around 1.200$ - 1.500 $ and it would make more sense and distinguish the Studio as a real altermative in looks and price.

I feel your pain. 90s studios are generally excellent, had one on loan when I was like 15/16.
Been playing my Les Paul Studio Gold Top since 2013 and love it to bits. The split coils are pretty nice too.
Gibson and fender are all over priced. Van Halen pieced together a partscaster and used it for years. If it wasn’t for credit cards and financing these guitars would just hang the walls.
Really, that’s the way to go. Find a guitar that feels good and just customize it yourself. Don’t wait on Gibson to do it for you.
Wow, great playing, Captain, at the end there! I think blue burst is your color 🤘
Am I the only one who thinks Les Paul’s look wrong without the poker chip?
Agreed, it's fine for like a PRS or an ESP single cut, but an LP just needs it!
agree, but I guess it's easy to install one?
10$ and 10 minutes to install one.
No your not the only one
Just buy one.
My mom bought one kislux and she loves it. It had been there for over 10 years when she went out with it.
I love how the studio looks without the binding on the body. It's just a great look to me for a LP.
You guys sound great playing them. That helps !!
I just bought a 1990 Studio with an ebony board for $650…
I still have a 2003 Limited Edition Studio- Copper Metallic top, ebony board, no markers. Bought new. Great guitar. Cost just over a grand.
£1600 for a studio is criminal.
Buy used then. 1600 is nothing for the number of hours spent. Fishing, camping, cars think of the hobby that doesn't require significantly more money.
@@SteGoughdotCom Standard money starts at $2300.
Love the blue burst
Excellent review once again guys. Cheers from Oz. :)
Actually, burstbucker pros, fret binding, coil splits, this is a 1600 dollar guitar
Yes, but not really... They are 1800-1900 Euro in Europe...
Gibson Make better pickups than the BB Pros . 57 classics BB1 BB2 BB3 and at this price point they should have better pickups.
I vote BB1 for the neck and BB3 for the Bridge .
But no suitcase, and not AAA top
My $500 dollar Epi has binding and coil splitting. That’s not a high end feature anymore because it’s on the “affordable” brand. I can’t find a new Gibson solid body for under $1500. Even the light weight modern is $1500 and it’s all mahogany, dot fret markers, no coil split, no binding and it doesn’t have BB pro pickups. The prices are insane
@@foxman8882 500 dollar Epi doesn’t sound, play, or smell like a Les Paul tho
Those New 2024 Les Paul Studion "Session" guitars look pretty sweet

I bought mine back in 1996 also in wine red. It’s been only like a year since I changed all black hardware to creme hardware just like this one and I love the look of it. Another thing (I don’t recall them saying or mentioning that older studios don’t come with neck binding (like mine). I see these new ones that do come with neck binding. I paid $899 for my studio.
I thought the jam at the end was worth the £1600 on its own ;) - cheers guys!!
can you force Gibson to make Explorers in more colors please and thank you.
Well said !!
Gotta say those neck improvements really make them look nicer and I imagine smoother to play.
Haha £1,600 for an LP studio is utter madness!
Going over the price of PRS's comparable line without offering better quality is madness. However, the price includes taxes.
Try buying a house, or even gas or groceries. Or anything, for that matter.
They will need to compete with Epiphone
I agree with you about split coil humbuckers. I love my PRS S2 594, but never use that feature.
It's back !!! .... I didn't know it left !!!.
May as well just get an SG Standard at that price. Same price except you get the flagship version of the guitar instead of the less-expensive compromise version.
Different Pickups.
@@mylogify good. Honestly the ones in the studio sound off to me, not sure what it is.
I bought my studio new in 2022, didn't know they ever left.
So this new re-released studio is 1500 and an Epiphone with the same specs I.E same headstock same pickups is also around 1200 to 1500. The epiphone also comes with a Harrdcase.
At least they’re back to binding and nitro like when I got mine in 2018. Bare necks and those light satin finishes for a studio was insane.
Glad I got my Tribute before Gibson decided to cut it out of their LP line up.
Got one too. I think they cut it to make way for Epiphone 1959 LP personally.
Same. I got one in 2018. Great guitar.
These are freakin awesome! And the price hasn’t changed from what the old studio cost.
£1600? Yeh think I’ll stick with D’Angelico guitars 👌
Obviously the prices are significantly higher, but the appearance and bells and whistles in those Studios are a fair bit greater, too.
its the price that puts me off
I have a 2016 studio + ice tea burst with coil split, db boost used as off switch with no battery, and I added the green mod. It's heavy af but i love it.
Honestly just buy one of the Sire LP style guitars and by a bunch of pedals.
I can watch the intros to your videos all day.
Why does it cost only $200 less than an SG Standard? Who thought that was a good idea?
also you can find good used sg standards for 1000 usd/eur/gbp easy
I have a Wine red studio which I bought in the 90s for around £600 brand new , still got it still play it and I suppose I got lucky with it being a good Gibson Guitar
I dont have a problem with ith the price if its well mate. The issue is that Gibson right up to Murphy lab are just sloppy. You can get great examples but for yhe price, every example should be great.
Gibson's 'affordable' range is now the higher end Epiphones. Anything at or below $1500 basically
That's the Tribute, isn't it?
Same guitar was made in 2019 for under $1000 with hardshell case. GC was blowing them out marked down...they were not a big seller then.
Isn’t that the modern lite?
Glad to see these back. I can't get on with the weight relief though. I had a Tribute a couple years back and it felt like a toy.
I remember having an Alpine White one back in 1990/91 with gold hardware, which I paid £350 for..... Should never have traded it up.....
I've got a 1990 Studio in black with gold hardware, ebony board and minimal weight relief. Feels and sounds like a Custom, just without any binding. I paid less than £450 for it in 2008 and I'm never letting it go!

Also last time I checked Studios used to have a satin finish (excluding the occasional limited run)
@@Counterflak Yes, I should have mentioned the finishes too: surely a simple finish would cost less than sunburst?
@@sillysausage4549 30$? Where did that figure come from?

@@1man1guitarletsgo $30 is way low when you figure the added labor for the gloss finish and the neck binding, plus the pickup upgrade. Builders make $40K and up for Gibson, so that's approx $20/hour each at minimum. Plus you're paying the retail markup, not just Gibson's direct cost. Guitar stores aren't selling these for no profit (and they shouldn't).
Nice guitar playing!
My fav Gibson is the Studio... because of NO binding. Love the pickup swap and colors here, do NOT like that they added binding to the neck.
They did it in 2019 and sold them for bit over $900 at Guitar Center....nobody really noticed.

I get people complaining about the pricing, but a Standard in the US is like $2,800-$3,000, so by comparison a $1,600 studio is quite a bit cheaper. Not saying I want to spend the money on either one, but it does make the studio seem like a significant better value for a USA made LP single-cut.
