  • David Pagan Butler introduces natural swimming pools -- no chemicals, just plants and a simple 12 volt powered filter to clean the water -- and shows you how to make your own from recycled materials for a fraction of the cost of one installed by a professional contractor. Great fun and a beautiful wildlife habitat too. This is a trailer for David's Natural Swimming Pools DVD which is available here: www.green-shopp...

I was hoping you would had made a series showing more detail on what you did in construction, what types of plants were chosen and why and what brand or aerators you used. Also, what climate are you in as a reference. If you did make more detailed videos, please direct me to them. Otherwise, Thanks for sharing and congrats on your awesome pools.

You can drink this pond water! I have just had the water in this pool tested by the labs at South Coast Water. It meets (and exceeds) UK drinking water standards.

I made a natural pool out of a creek that runs at the back of my house. All I did was dig to the dept I wanted it,
since the water constantly flow there’s no need to clean or anything.

I breed frogs in outside ponds. Tadpoles don't eat mosquito larvae, so I add a couple of very small fish - ones which don't eat the tadpoles! Result - not a single mosquito!

Ok fair point. We don't have alligators. But I'm sure if swimming pools are alligator proof then a Natural Swimming Pool could be made just as secure. You could even make it look like a normal bright blue pool. You can buy pond liner in bright colours too. They don't all have to be black. But hey, I'm sure some clever guys over there are already working on it.

I'm getting married soon, and my fiance and I plan to move to Mississippi, buy a small house and make a natural pool to enjoy with our future children! Thanks for this great video. It's really the same principle as a planted aquarium, and I've kept aquariums for years. I'm not so handy as you, so I might still have to hire a contractor for some of the work.

For those who don't appreciate brown water of this hobbyist pond, designs that are more scientific produce clear water. Please gauge this separately from a professional design. If you are concerned about snakes, a better design can have far fewer plants for snake hiding cover. By the way, the brown color of the water comes from partially decayed plants.

@timjones066 : Me too. I like anything that's NATURAL. Natural pool, natural foods, natural water. Basically, anything that doesn't use CHEMICALS. When I first vacation in the USA, I was horrified to find out that they use chlorine in their tap water. I didn't want to shower for days. I'm from Laos and we bathe in rain water that we collect in a water barrell. Rain water is pure and hygenic unless the air is polluted with smog and other chemicals.

Can you make it out of cement, without any natural source of water? Unfortunately, I got none, so I'd need it to be as natural as possible in the most artificial environment, because, even if artificial, I believe nature brings health and shine, and it's strong enough to make through anything. Possible, though?

Thanks for all your postings on making natural pools... you've put together some great examples and points for consideration. Forgive me, but I'm still not quite clear on your filter system... I understand the planted zone does quite a bit, but you also reference the filter that uses the air bubble pump - can you direct me to details on the function and design of that pump? Is it a skimmer? Does it contain filtermedia? Thoughts on sizing a filter system to a given pool size? And what is the design of the drainage hoses in the planted zone? Many thanks!

Yes, you're right that could happen. I would think that the fish would keep them under control if that did happen so maybe keeping the fish population up would prevent it. IDK, people swim in lakes and rivers all the time. I guess if you want sterile you'd have to go the clorinated pool route.

this is a cool idea, but I'd be worried about venomous snakes, such as cottonmouth and water moccasin hanging around and in the pool. certainly going to be plenty of food for them (small fish, crawfish, frogs, etc) to entice them to come around.

I live in Portland,Oregon where at best we have a 4 month natural swimming period in the summer. Outside of that it is cool, damp, rainy and not very swimmer friendly the rest of the year. Any suggestions on keeping the pool "open for swimming" for a much longer season? If not, have you heard of anyone having success building this inside an Earthship greenhouse? Building it inside defeats the purpose of the 'natural' part of the pool process, which isn't ideal. ;-( Thanks!
