Thanks Jerry for a very informative and helpful video, I have currently been living in Northern China for the last 14 years as an English teacher, one more year to go, and then get out before something bad happens regarding a certain island!! Bangkok and Thailand are definitely on my list to retire too in a years time, Hope you enjoy China, look me up if you come up north.
Good luck with your last year in China. Our first day of golf was quite good. Don’t expect to get up north but please do let us know when you make to Bangkok.
You are living my dream, im 41 so abt 14 years to go. You mentioned you lived up north in the US-which part? Im near seattle, so my dream is to live in phuket and nangkok from oct-may, and here in WA may-oct. Keep living the dream jerry, guys like you keep us motivated 2 get there. Cheers
I’m from the Northeast. 100% living in Bangkok. Don’t rush the next 14 years. They will go fast enough. Thailand will be here for you when it’s time to retire
Live on USD$1,000 a month in Bangkok on a VERY tight budget, totally agree with Jerry, and likely without air conditioning. I have not thoroughly traveled around SE Asia looking for 'farang' gatherings but it is my impression that Bangkok has more and a wider variety of 'meet up' groups than say, KL, Singapore, Phnom Phen, Da Nang, Saigon, Hanoi, or even Penang Island.
Yes it's a lot easier to meet other expats in Bangkok. And many really good people to become friends with. Much more than I expected. I feel very lucky to have found such a nice group
Every Friday 11:13:00 Starbucks EmQuartier Glass Building basement floor. All way in back past the food court area. Only Starbucks down there. Look forward to meeting you down the road
The recommended minimum is 300 baht. I usually tip 500 for 18 holes and most friends that I golf with about the same. Ultimately it’s up to each individual but 300 baht should be the minimum for a good round
I was surprised to hear you opted to skip the Medicare. If you plan to come back into the Medicare system at a later age, are you concerned about paying the penalty for all the years you skipped? Or have you built that into your cost/benefit calculation?
Good question. I don’t really have plans to go back for many years. If/when I do my premium will be 100% higher than it would be based on 10% penalty per year up to 100%. So yes this has all been taken into account based on future budget. I can’t use medicare here so makes no sense to waste money IMO
I watched the whole video waiting for you to say the most ugly thing about living in BKK is losing in pickleball and having to buy Chris a free coffee 😂

ไปเที่ยวไหนค่ะคุณเจ
Congrats on creating a new life there!
What kind of visa has allowed you to stay 7 years?
I am on a ten year visa. LTR or Long Term Resident Visa. There are also one year retirement visas available age 50 and over
Nice video, can you let me know how much to tip a Thai caddy ? I want to start playing soon in Thailand.

Part B Plus IRMAA up charge for some of LTR folks makes too expensive for expats here!
