    Great to see the intricate early/later System 6 track variations. After accessing the Rovex Photographic Studio Archive one picture revealed that no preproduction curved point samples were available in late 1973 . The layout studio photo would appear on page 2 (20th edition ) 1974 catalogue, 3rd/4th edition Track Plans book covers and appears fully operational apart from the exposed foam underlay and missing curved point . Naturally for publication the studio photo had to be cropped to eliminate this omission. Your regular 60’s/70’s catalogue features certainly bring back many fond childhood memories as well. Keep up the excellent work !

    Hi Oscar,
    I think it is fair to say we are enjoying the temporary layout and development almost as much as you are. Lovely Black/Crimson 5 and coaches. Very interesting look at the variants of System 6 track. Only the other day I was thinking of the drawbacks of gluing and pinning track and thought about trying to source screws. In that respect the link to the supplier is the highlight of the video for me, many thanks.

      Good morning Gordon great to hear you found it interesting. Someone had suggested these micro screws to me when I was making modifications to the last layout about six months ago for so. I had read up about them but had no use for them at that point as I was already planning to dismantle the layout. So when it came to time to playing with the system 6 track I gave them go along with track pins I think the micro screws are the way to go. It makes changing your mind/plans that much easier.
      Thanks again for watching.

    Evening Oscar. I'm really enjoying your videos as your explain whats happing very well 👍🏻 As a young boy I had lots of these trains and couldn't get them out there boxes quick enough 🤣 I suppose that's why many boxes got badly damaged 😫 If only I had them now 😂 I hope your sort that super 6 track out as well as your last layout 🤔 Looking forward to the next episode of what's becoming a really interesting childhood model railway. Hope your pantograph fix for the class 86 goes well and you video it? Cheers Stevie 😎

      Good morning Stevie, I think you right as children the boxes were totally irrelevant. Its all about the items contained within. Its great to hear you are enjoying the videos, I have just recently repaired the 86 and now I'm considering a few coaches in similar livery to go with it, so a video will probably be made in the new year.

    Hello Oscar. This is the period of Hornby that I came into in the mid-1970's. Very nice to see the old System 6 track and how the end sleepers inter-locked. I still have a few 'heavy blade' points and they work as well as the, sometimes more fickle, Nickel Silver plated points. The over-head pick-ups are becoming a greater feature on modern railways so there may be a demand again for over-head catenaries. Great stuff. Thank you, sir!

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi it’s amazing the development that’s gone on just with the points in the system of track over the years. As you say overhead power supply is quite prevalent on the railways these days and it’s odd that it’s still not really a feature in any of the main manufacturers product lines.

    I got my Tri-ang set in 1970 for Xmas when I was 7yo. I'm 57 now and I still have the entire set. I'm in Ontario Canada. This video is the first time I've ever seen another set from the same line of products. As a kid, I tried to expand my set using Tyco Ho-scale stuff but it never quite fit properly. I never was able to find any more cars with the right couplers. On your setup, I recognized one small building and some of the gray plastic base sections as the same as what I have. I've gone to many mall-shows over the decades and seen some big layouts but I never saw another engine or cars like mine. My engine is a 4-6-2 black steam loco with a front headlight and smoking stack.

      Clicking on the P icon of Oscar should take you to Oscars home page. There you can see all of the videos to choose from.
      In the playlists of Transcontinental, with 23 videos, you should see your old R54 black steam loco covered in numerous videos with the story behind it and many other items intended for Canada. Lots more in the video listing that did not make it to the playlist.
      You are in for a treat with Oscar's back catalogue. By far the best Tri-ang related site on TH-cam.

A terrific model and quite a few variation over the years. Here are a couple of links you may find of interest.

    Hi Oscar, Lovely video. System 6, I find that term somewhat amusing. To us here in the states, this is just standard HO scale track. I've got 3 different kinds. Nickel, Steel, and Brass plated rail track from various era's. Certainly PECO track is the way to go. But do to cost, I use Atlas code 100 rail for my old AHM/Rivarossi steam locomotives that require the Code 100 track and Peco turnouts or points. Lisa

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Lisa thanks again for watching it’s great to hear about the different variations of the HO scale track you have. I don’t think anybody really refers to this track anymore as system 6 here I’m just using the term as reference as it was marketed so heavily at the time of change from the early super 4. It will be interesting to see if there are any major developments with track systems in the future.

    Thanks Oscar really helpful , I have a ittle of the later System 6 track, I found it rather disapointing, especially the points, after Super 4 I used some Graham Farrish track they made briefly, which I thought was pretty realistic, since then I've nearly always used Peco, which is easy to work and very reliable. I quite like the idea of a layout using Super 4 and Standard track, just for running Triang stock. Hornby Dublo two rail is quite nice, although the points are a bit nobby !

    Interesting . As my first trainset was a “Freightmaster “ in 1965 I started off with System 4 . Had to change over to System 6 which I started in 1970 with a “Junior Freightliner “set, but was still operating the two systems complete with R476 converter tracks until mid seventies . The irony of it is that the sleeper spacing on Super 4 I think is more realistic for British Railways . Seemed to spend a huge amount of time cleaning the track with methylated spirits ! The good thing about modern track is that it seems to require less cleaning , a quick brush over with a track cleaning rubber seems to suffice! Love the way the layout is developing . Never apologise for a long video, love every minute .

Best regards to you

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Mr Snooze thanks again for watching, I find these early pieces of track quite fascinating a lot of development must’ve gone into these systems over the years. The layout keeps changing and is turning into a little more than I had anticipated at the beginning. I think there is class 08 or show up in videos in time. The green one is model are R354 from about 1980 I think and has about the finest flanged wheels are any of the models I have. And the blue 08 model R152 Is the one I The track testing and cleaning on the previous layout. And has wheel flanges fairly typical of the late 60s and early 70s it is enormously powerful with plenty of magnetic stick to the track. But I think she’s missing three of her steps and has a very characterful wobble when in motion. So all the models currently on the layout are quite good at testing the track work!

    Another really interesting video - thank you! Having started with Series 3 all those years ago, I grudgingly accepted Super 4 ....but seem to remember treating the System 6 with some scorn - haha. Now back developing a layout, I'm using Series 3 track I already had for a fiddle/storage yard, supplemented by Super 4. Watching your videos, I'm hoping to make an upper level with some of the old track I bought recently. However on the lower track in the harder to reach areas, I'm using Peco Code 100 flexitrack as it's new and clean. The older track is a mix of reasonable and rusty. Rusty is good for sidings to store rolling stock!! I did try a vinegar bath for a small bath of Series 3, but it ate the sleeper chairs! Left it too long 😂
    Thanks again - your videos help me to persevere with the Triang.....many have told me to chuck the old track but the nostalgia value is high.

    so, the MK1 system 6 i didn't know was even a thing, i thought it just jumped straight to what we all know and tolerate :P
    i was genuinly contemplating doing a version of S6 like the MK1 version as i recently fell in love with how S4 (in both TT and OO) looks as it doesn't look quite as toy like in the way it connects, and with having a 3D printer it seemed to be a good bet, might still do it as i do think it'd still look better as i'm not a fan of the ends of modern hornby track with the weird fishplate gaps

    I stopped playing with my trains in the late 1960s with Super 4. By the time I started again with my son in the early 1990s we had System 6, but I had no idea that the early System 6 had the gap under the rails. Dropping that feature must have been the worst decision ever made because it removed the ability to fit accessories where you wanted, and right up to the present day features like uncoupling ramps really won't fit properly because they have nowhere for the clips to clip into.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Roger, I think you right it certainly reduces the options with clip fit accessories also taking the gap away possibly increases the overall sound. But I think it may increases the strength of the track taking out the air gap as that early was rather bendy!

    There's a video on TH-cam with a chap talking about connections of track. And he was saying that the split sleeper track was more realistic than the later track because you don't see that sort of gap on real rail track. I wonder if they named Super 4 track after System 6 came out?

      Good morning Graham, a number of people have said the super 4 has a more realistic sleeper spacing.
      Thanks again for watching.

    That was quite interesting. The curved points must be very handy. Will your older Tri-ang models run on the System 6? I am a bit confused about what will run on what. I like the idea of the track screws too. Partly influenced by your fantastic channel, I have started a small and fairly specific collection of Tri-ang items, a lot of it older models. The question of which track to use is something I need to sort out. Enjoyable and informative as always. Cheers

      Good morning Pauline great to hear you have a collection of these older Tri-ang models. I think the straightforward answer is Super 4 will suit the very oldest of Tri-angs -models and models up to around 1980 run very well on it. The layout as I have it at the moment with this late 70s ish track is not great for the earlier models. Flange depth is not consistent on tri-ang models. And the back to back even from the early to mid 70s models can be an issue with wagons and coaches as well as the locomotives. I shall be returning to super 4 before long as it offers me far more flexibility with my collection. But having great fun at present with this new layout and will run some older models to show some of the problems that can be encountered.
      Thanks again.

    Layout looks great. It is not hard to understand why people embraced System 6, but I still think Super 4 was abandoned too soon. I wonder if Hornby have have stayed with Super 4 - with more refined points and curved points - would it have survived and thrived in the same way Marklin did?

      I think you might be right with a slight upgrade to some of the items, perhaps the materials there may have been a few more years to be had from Super 4. Possibly cost was a driving factor I think super 4 required quite a lot of material in its production compare to what followed.
      Stay safe.

    I'm really enjoying watching this layout taking shape. I'd be interested to know if you have any problems running older Triang stock on System 6 track. Thank you.

      Good morning David it’s not an easy question to answer. The very old tri-ang stuff doesn’t run successfully at all. some of the items in the mid 60s run to some degree the very late 60s and early 70s stuff runs well reasonably well but not comfortable. I shall try and include this subject in the video shortly.
      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it’s hugely appreciated.

      Good morning Malcolm the H&M Duet, a terrific piece of kit especially for these older type models. All my model railway items I had as a child. Vanished one way or another as I grew up. These things happen with the passage of time.

    Well oscar what progress with the layout and you say its only temporary and you may change it, i think its fine and interesting as it is. The long platform is something else. Very interesting as ever as you take us through one system to another. Thanks for getting my attention. Keep safe my friend.

      Good morning Paul great to hear you are enjoying seeing the station develop. The whole layout is developed a little more than I was thinking. But I think it’s going to be a great background for some of the later models in my collection using a mix of these items.

    Interesting as ever Oscar. I hadn't realised all the changes made to System 6 over the years. The early style of split point blades looks very reminiscent to the PECO Streamline design.
    Do you plan to have sections of Standard, Series 3 and Super 4 in your final plan?

      Hi Peter yes it’s fascinating the changes that happened to the points design over the years. I don’t think I’m going to have any series 3 or super 4 within this layout. I think it’s become system six only and has developed a rather more than I thought it might. But it’s a great background for some of the later items within my collection.
