      Yeah, funny thing that the most unrealistic part of most movie lockpicking scenes is doing it with a paperclip.
      Not sure about USA, but in my country, paperclips are too thick for that, so when most people inevitably try to pick a lock, they conclude it's difficult and requires huge amounts of skill.
      While in reality, the only thing they were doing wrong is using the paperclip instead of some tool that's thin enough.

    I have a theory. To defeat LPL, you simply have a mechanical arrangement so that you have to unlock hundreds of Masterlock #3's to get the door open. Tedious but not difficult you think? HAH!!
    After opening hundreds of #3's LPL develops carpel tunnel syndrome from the repetitive motion of mindlessly opening so many identical locks.
    LPL not only defeated now, but defeated PERMANENTLY.

    • @shura0107
      @shura0107 2 ปีที่แล้ว +99

      LPL has stated he does have repetitive strain injury/carpal tunnel in his hands from picking, which is why he came up with the bent turning tool, so it's much easier on his hands. So while RSI slowed him down for a little bit, he still hasn't evolved into his final form.

      Defeating the LPL is not difficult. As long as there's no conventional lock on the outside and the entire housing and door is made of high quality steel there's no way to open it from the outside with the tools he has at his disposal.
      On top of that. In one of his videos he also showcases two locks from Stuff Made Here where he can only open a conventional custom made lock by prying behind the lock casing. If you seal that with welding for instance and actually have the door positioned as an outside door would be positioned I'm sure he wouldn't be able to pick it unless maybe he makes a specific tool for it. But then it ends up being guesswork. In the end any conventional lock can be picked as far as I understand it.

    For the White Collar one: he gives up after one bump attempt, but not because it didn't work. He starts to bump it because he's familiar with the model, presumably because he knows it has no security pins, but stops after Mozzie tells him he souped it up. Presumably that would include at least some security pins, which would render bump attacks impractical.

    Love seeing the LPL comment on movie locks. Regarding the last lock from House, I remember having a desk lock that rotated 360 degrees when locking and unlocking. Because of this, the “didn’t turn” comment from the single end image could be premature.

    • @LeSarthois
      @LeSarthois 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, we don't see in the video shot clearly, but several desks I've seen in this style have a lock that is more like a door knob : you need to keep the key turned and pull the drawer. So if the drawer in the final scene is pulled open, then the key hole would be vertical again.
      Now I'm not sure this is the right type of lock for that, but the scene doesn't seen odd to me for that reason.

    I just rewatched all 96 episodes of Dexter (included with Amazon Prime). They did a lot of lock picking. The speed of picking was a little unrealistic, but they did use two tools in the locks.

      Got to edit things down. Don't want to show a person entering a car, bucking, adjusting mirrors, turning the key etc. You should them enter and drive away split seconds later.

    If you put handcuffs on correctly, the keyhole will face up, away from the hands, to prevent any self picking.

    You could *maybe* make that breaking bad one work. You'd need a crucible to attach to the door such that as the thermite lights, it flows down the crucible and into the door, where you hope enough will sit on the bolt to melt it.
    Getting the thermite in the door seems easy. Controlling it after that, less so

    The Lives of Others ( Das leben der anderen) was set in East Germany and that pretty much all you need to know. Who needs to pick a lock to get in to a block the all when there's informers everywhere? Also they probably have the key anyway - master key or keyed alike.

      Some of the locks they mass produced for housing like this also had some faults that weren't fixed or were fixed after a ton of them were made and in use. If they were made to accept a master key, which seems likely for an apartment complex like this, it's even easier to get in

    No one pointed this out and I noticed this thought persisted into the testing video, the breaking bad clip wasn't a lock perse it was an electronic card reader, they melted it and disabled the electromagnetic lock (usually positioned at the top of the door) it wasn't a deadbolt.

    At 9:43 the door wasn't locked, but on European door knobs (don't know about US) the knob is usually not movable.
    So he would need a key to open the door even if it wasn't locked.
