Yes Gio, fish is most likely fresh if the eyes are clear and it has no odor. We often buy seafood from the wet market never had a problem. The meat markets are unsanitary and pose a real health hazard.

Steak cooked well is a bad steak in my opinion. Actually I told the wife that I would give it a go, but she insist that we would not! Of course we are not in the Philippines, but in the U.S.A. born and raised. It didn't look like Gio bought any fruits or vegetables, maybe a wasted trip. Wouldn't be my pick for a time out if I didn't intend to buy anything.

Yes it sounds stupid what he say. Meat there is a limit time to store without a refrigerator . I am sure most meat in restaurants are bought from the wet market. Bacteria that makes you sick are pathogens. Like salmonella, e-coli, staphylococcus, Bacillus areus. If the meat is infected from the source of production or butcher even if you put it in the refrigerator and a clean place the bacteria will just sleep. The moment you defrost it will start to multiply. The best way to avoid food poisoning is to clean it well before cooking and cook all meat thoroughly. It is heat that destroys bacteria Raw meat is a hazard to eat. For your info pathogen exists on people too especially staphylococcus, in noise, hair so if you are so worried about food poisoning you should buy and cook all your food because food poisoning can come in many ways.not only those meat in the wet market.

You have eaten lots of meat out the market. That's where the restaurants buy and hotels.
    😮
Filipinos and savy foreigners in have what they call a Suki. Their vendor. And they will give them / save for them fresh produce. Your learning boy. Slowly.

Great video Gio. The key to any wet market is to get there early A.M. in the morning when everything is fresh. You also have the most options. I buy seafood, chicken and occasionally beef. If you're looking for USDA grade A beef choice cuts, you won't find those things. Still the beef is good for stews, and soup. Of course produce is a great thing to buy. I definitely buy eggs too.

Realy you have been in the Philippines for a couple of years, every restaurant you eat at , every burger place gets its raw products from these markets. the only time i have been sick in PI from food is supermarkets that keep food in bins for a whole week.Just put new stuff on top don't use bottom first. Please Don't move from big city because you wont have choice to buy at supermarket. You going to starve Mate. How many cases of food poisoning have you heard about in the Philippines, be less that USA i am sure.

  • @StanHasselback

Clear, bright, and bulging black eyes, not grey on fish is a very good indication they are fresh. They should look almost like they are alive. gills should be redish. My grandmother who owned a little grocery store tough me that. Other fish most likely won't hurt you if you cook it long enough it just won't taste as good. Really fresh fish taste very good. I've heard the Philippines have some of the best fishing areas in the world. Even if you are not a fish person if you can get really fresh fish and BBQ it you should give it a chance. The vegetables look incredible.

I've been eating those types of food since I've been here almost 3 years. I do my best to stay away from too much pork. Mainly just chicken, fish and beef whenever I can find it. I mean as far as the living goes it sounds like it’s fantastic. As far as pricewise goes. I’m retired in the United States. I live with my daughter. I have friends who are Indian and I keep telling me to move to India because the prices are really cheap and it sounds like they’re telling me the same things you you’re saying about the women there in the Philippines are like in India, so I was just kind of curious about you know what kind ofwhat made you move over to there and how you make a living there in fact, I’m watching your video now. It would be beneficial to ALL expats to learn the local dialect and, in your situation, it is Visayan. If you learn Visayan (or Tagalog), there’s no need to bring a Pinay to do all the bargaining. Also, speaking the language of the locals will help generate more communication with the locals. Please remember, you are a guest in their country so be polite enough to learn basic Visayan ❤

I was thinking that restaurants would be purchasing supplies from the wet markets. I don't live in the Philippines, but even here in Oz, I no longer feel safe eating fast food, or restaurant food. I have had some questionable deliveries a few months ago after not buying from this service for quite awhile, and it just confirmed to me why it is much safer to cook your own food from scratch. I think standards are lowering as time goes on and I don't like being sick.

If you eat at a restaurant there, where you think they buy their meats and produce lol.

True. They just don't get it.
They think just because they go to a nice restaurant in the Philippines that the meat or fish they are eating wasn't bought at a wet market.
      😂

I'm 100% with Gio on this one........only buy eggs, vegetables and fruit at the market. You do not want food poisoning here.

The vegetables are just as deadly and unsafe as the meat, because the flies fly from the meat section straight to the vegetable section.
I’ve been there and somehow survived, but I won’t return.
You guys that have never been there yet can not even imagine the smells.
I’ve been to markets in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia and for sure there are less flies and less bad smell. The meats are more fresh and not brown and dry. Not sure why or how, but that’s my experience.

We buy chicken, pork and fish at the wet market all the time and not once have I or anyone else in the house gotten sick. My wife knows if it's fresh or not. Most of the time, it's fresh. No additives.. The best time to go is in the morning when everything is fresh. Not late in the afternoon. The meat you buy in S&R and Landers is not fresh. In the wet market, the fish is fresh caught and the meat is fresh slaughter. You don't go when everything has been laying in the hot sun all day. Dont be ridiculous. And stay away from street food.

    Great video Gio…
This is the type of information that I love to find out. If a community has a vibrant market, it would go a long way towards what I’ll be looking for in a long term rental or condo purchase. I heard your shopping partners mention they normally go around 8AM. What time did you shoot this vide? I understand your concern about not buying meat there, but if you go early in the morning you will get fresher options…and bring your Filipina, so you don’t pay the ExPat price! 😂
    Salamat…

There was a time in the US when there was no refrigeration and the PH is not the only country in the world that lives like that. If everyone was getting sick no one would be shopping there.

Sounds right but not at all true. No one in the meat markets understands microbes such as viruses or bacteria or how they are spread. Few people in the general population understands microbes or food borne sickness. I would say MAYBE 10% of the population has a basic understanding of why you might get sick from unrefrigerated meat or why not cleaning your hands thoroughly would risk food borne illness.

I would never go to the wet market by myself without a Filipina. They have been doing it all their lives and know what is not going to get you ill . Of course, our system needs to get acclimated to the fruits and vegetables that are non GMO . I've eaten pork out of the wet market and it was of course well cooked before consumption. Filipinos don't eat raw vegetables as everything is either sautéed or boiled before eaten with onions, garlic and tomatoes. All three of these have properties that kill off bacteria and parasites as well as the cooked fish is often dipped in vinegar, garlic, and onion with chili peppers 🌶. They know how not to spend their day sitting on the toilet.
