I retired and moved to the Philippines in 2016. Been living since then about a little over an hour South of Bacolod City. Bacolod City has everything a western foreigner would want. Great markets and restaurants and lots of things you can buy at markets that cater and sell products from America. Western Visayas is a excellent place for foreigners to live and retire in. I grew up with the Filipino culture while living in the SF Bay Area. First visited the Philippines in 2007 to meet a woman I had met online for over a year. In 2025 I'm still with the same woman and I'm enjoying my retired life here in the Philippines. It's a wonderful country with very warm and happy people!!! 👍🇺🇲🇵🇭
Another great video. One suggestion with your mics. Make sure you switch them around. When you watch the video and you are sitting on the left, from the perspective of the camera but you are using the right microphone, it makes watching seem like something is off. It took me a couple minutes to figure out what was off at first then I realized that when you talk, you were on the left but I was hearing you in my right ear in my headphones and the opposite for Bill.
‘’Move to the area you want to live in and get the girl not get the girl and move to her area’’ is great advice 👍
I agree or the girl should move to you
Great advice for sure.. incredibly difficult to follow here in the Philippines for most expats. And you can't understand why from your couch or basement in the west.
💯 correct
For us younger under 50 guys Tinder and single life is a dream. So Manila and Cebu way better crop to choose from.
Bacolod has landers and S&R very attractive for expat shoppers
thank you
Texas Filipino is who he is talking about. I grew up in Iloilo but we moved to Bacolod as the farms were in Negros. I love both cities.
Great sit-down video. I'm glad you're making new friends.
Good to see gio
How frequent are the brownouts there so far and water shut offs?
Great vid
Thanks Bill, good to hear you are settling in there. It sounds convenient to have the inter island car ferries. Freedom is an open road !
I always luv my home city, Bacolod
Cant get enough if it❤so many new places to go too..Rockwell and Phinma ongoing
bacolod is shopping heaven with S&R and Landers superstore.. its an easy sell for expats and its still laid back environment.. when you go out of the city its a whole new world.. nature
Good interview with bill gio pick up little bits of information 🎉
He's right because Bacolod still has a lot to offer in terms of Nature vibes. Bacolod is bigger almost 2 and a half the size of Iloilo City. Bacolod still has some mountainside place where you can set back and relax. Enjoying laid back life as what he says.
Thanks Gio.
I like the province better then city everything's seems more relax and the city is very busy and rushing around
I toured all the big condos and am in The Palladium, a beautiful building that is well built, with plenty of staff and great service....if anything is needed an engineer is here in 30 minutes or less. Build quality in PH is always an issue....the newer Megaworld buildings are larger and much better quality. If you are choosing a city to live in based on the supermarkets/stores then your needs are quite simple. S&R here is adequate...
What is the best flight into Bacolod for traveling from the US? Are there flights from Honolulu?
walking in her shadow.... Lol Gio!!!!
😆
@@GiointhePhilippines Gio, are you allowed to use a barbeque grill and a small meat smoker on your apartment balcony?
Good information. Still sorting which is better, myself. But one things for sure, Bocalad has a hell’ava good hamburger place! Thanks for the tip on EME’s. 100% truth.. good &like back home.
its Bacolod sir..
For ease of travel, I wouldn’t want to stay more than a 2 hour drive from a major international airport like Manila or Cebu… maybe Clark.
I'm like Bill I prefer to live
about 15 to 20 minutes
out of a major city.
First time I was in Iloilo I stayed for a month or two. I started out in a condo but it was a water leak so I moved to a budget hotel instead that offered monthly rates. The hotel was alright for the price, it was right in the center of the city proper, just by the open market. Now, I'm not a big "open market guy" but I passed it on my way to a nearby mall during the days. For some reason they had major jeepney routs right through that open market. So you walk among crowds of ppl in the market place, then you need to get out of the way cos a jeepney full of ppl needs to pass, and then another and another, etc, etc. How stupid to have jeepneys blasting through an open market !
And as you watch the surroundings, it's mostly beaten down streets and ugly buildings. People seem poor and I'd say most of that area of Iloilo's "proper city" seemed quite miserable to me.
Next time I "landed there", I figured I'd stay a bit outside the city, like where the big condo buldings and the malls were Well, I rented an aptmt in Ayala, however I suspect I got some "late Covid" or something was seriously wrong with the aptmt. It was hard to breath inside, I never had experienced that, neither sooner nor later. But in that place, it was really hard to breathe if you laid down, like in the bed to sleep, not a great thing.
Now, I had also looked at Bacolod at the time and replied to an ad there. A cheaper condo, but bigger in size in a nice neighborhood. I managed to get my deposit back in Ayala and took the ferry to Bcd, way better in my opinion. Still the Ph., of course, with all that entails, but Iloilo, I never got the fascination of that place, that some others seem to have.
I figure there are some "sister cities" around there that can be nice, like Jaro, but the proper city, not great in my opinion. And the area outside with the malls, etc., just overpriced and like most malls, after some time, pretty boring.
Hahha you suffer there in Bacolod with it'ms garbage everywhere and don't drag Iloilo down. It's way way better than Bacolod in all aspect. Look at the esplanade of Bacolod.
HI GIO , A nice interview with a NICE guy.
The friend he knows from ILOILO is not only a GENTLEMAN but an OUTSTANDING BUILDER and more.
I think the DODS looked down on you to have met BILL and BILL meeting you.
Hope all works out for BILL and his GF.
TY GIO , enjoying your content.
As a side note , having been in MANILA city , MAKATI and suburbs , back in mid 2000s , you might as well be in NYC...
GOD BLESS CIAO
Yeah, it seems like iloilo and bacolod are very similar. That's shocking about Manila, the outages and all that. That is a YUGE city. I'd think if anywhere, there would be solid.
there's no 'shortage' of brownouts down here in Bacolod. Our own internet through PLDT just blacked out for a day or so--its endemic to the entire country. All that being said, I'd be happy in Iloilo as well. Maybe even Roxas City.
@@chrisjuricichxl5 iloilo is always black out..
Iloilo is way better in all aspect.
Good decision Bill, metro Bacolod areas are an urban suburban, Silay, Talisay, Bago cities can be a great place to live
I’ve lived in Iloilo city and bocolod, hands down bocolod is the better place on many important fronts
@@Gmantriniits Bacolod u cannot spell it right are you for real?
@@ronaldoazarcon2551 what is the big deal?
I stayed with his buddy in mid December and it is a very nice area. His friend’s channel is TH-camr Texas Filipino and the place he is building on the beach is the Texas Filipino Resort. It’s on AirBNB. I will go back and visit James and Melinda.
Balanga Bataan 👍👍👍
Yup, I live in the Western Visayas but my gf has family in Balanga City in Bataan. Been going to Bataan since 2007 and was last there in Balanga City in 2022. Love it there and try to get there at least every couple of years!!!! 👍🇺🇲🇵🇭
Would of been interested in his driving comments Iloilo V Bacolod. We find the Iloilo drivers far more obliging than Bacolod drivers. Example often in Iloilo drivers stop at pedestrian crossings, never in Bacolod, generally far less stressful driving in Iloilo, I have extensive experience driving both cities.
same same.. im a driver also just the same
Hey Bill, enjoyed your video with Geo. How many Texan also living in Thailand. Where are you from Ennis Texas?
Hello, I am from East Texas. Also born and raised the Tyler Longview area. Great to meet more Texans living in Thailand for 10 years now contemplating going to the PI.
I’m originally from Terrell Texas. In recent years, I’ve lived in a little small town called Edgewood about 15 minutes east of Canton, Texas.
Bill didn't name him but from the clues he gave it sounds like he is friend with James Hightower of Texas Filipino. When I first saw Bill with Gio I didn't make the connections but now I can recall his visit with James and Melinda and their trips around Iloilo.
@@AresGodofWar you're correct
@@AresGodofWar and there's a good reason why James HT left Bacolod for Iloilo
@matdaibang1215 why is that?
How is the Nightlife there in Bacolod? Could you make a video about the most popular bars, sportsbars, and nightclubs in Bacolod? Or if anyone here know, have information about it?
Bill = good guy.
Hey, Gio... your microphone's sound is unbalanced with the other one... yours is lower.
I'll check it out
Hey Gio. Did u see yr nemesis Ricky, had to start a new channel after his disgraceful live stream from Thailand bar. Betting u had a good chuckle over that one. 🤣🤣🤣
Who is Ricky?
@ Ricky Drama or Sick Grandpa. I might have got it wrong but i thought he was trolling you a while ago. Sorry if it’s not right - might have been Reekay he was giving a hard time!
@@cliffyfellows38 I heard the name before. I just never watched.
🌴 👍
Yep I’d say you’re right. I watch all James videos for yrs. He’s a the dude.
LOL. Bill is focused on places and geography and Geo,keeps swinging the conversation back to relationships.
You noticed that lol
Yes he did want to spice up the content just a tad 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Having traveled back and forth for 27 years, I chose Bacolod also. Mostly because I have so many Filipino friends here, though I go to Iloilo about once a month. The people are really kind, and I live in probably the most central location of the city. Close to shopping malls, and a few minutes from the port. If I could pick one thing that I like about Iloilo over Negros island, it would be the cleanliness. Having said that, 27 years ago you couldn't go to downtown Bacolod without a handkerchief because the air pollution was so bad. I'm praying that since they fixed the air pollution problem, that they will figure out the trash problem. Probably going to head back to the States myself sometime this year, but I'll be headed back home to the Philippines after I spend time with family and friends.
@@HearOIsrael how is the air quality now in Iloilo and Bacolod? I have lung issues but want to move there
His friends are James & Melinda Hightower. I bet
Straight from 2 foreign vloggers few years back:
Iloilo is a GHOST TOWN
A lot of CEBUANOS / CEBUANAS from Cebu, Negros and even from Mindanao are always obsessed, hateful and envious towards Iloilo. Every time there is a vlog about Iloilo they are also present just to badmouth, insult, belittling and ridicule it. They're so desperate, disgusting, disgraceful, pathetic and shamelessly proud of their toxic culture. Well most of them have been known to engage in AFAM hunting, goldigging, scamming and promoters of S.E.X. tourism industry in the country.
I better choose iloilo its clean modern and beautiful and lot of open parks . Its near from boracay and guimaras and best beaches lije isla gigantes. Bacolod in other side is dirty lack of urban planning And I agree bacolod is laidback
Damo d tga Iloilo troolls...😅😅😅
"WHO" made it okay to date way younger in the USA "ONLY" if you're rich or famous? The rich or famous are reading this laughing their ass off at us.
Excellent story. But i chose Angeles because I was stationed here in the Philippines. I'm retired, 68, Some health issues and can use my VA benefits. Dating is whatever and whenever you want. Rent and utilities are cheap, 15,500. Almost never a brown out.
I couldn't think of a worse place to retire ,, Angeles and Dumb- a - get -me are both completely off my list
Dumb a get me lmao
😎👍🇺🇲
If I remember correctly.
There's actually a video or 10 thousand, warning not to do those things.
Maybe im wrong. Maybe it's only 8 thousand videos.
🤣
✌️
Good video I love Philippines but I am not sure if I could live there all year
another episode content style influenced by the of Every man has a story
You do realize I was around a few years before Everyman has a story right? lol
Interviewing people around the world has been around way before Mark ever moved to the Philippines. If Gio starts bragging about how he doesn't have a budget and doesn't even have to look at prices when he goes to buy things in the store then I would say he was influenced by Mark.
Iloilo is too small as a city.......
In 5-10 yrs Bacolod will overtake Iloilo in infrastructure coz Bacolod is bigger in Land Area.....Talisay Silay Bago and Murcia....
Iloilo is small but have bigger bank diposits compared to to super city bacolod
Keep dreaming. Fix your garbage first and your esplanade 😅😂
Bill.... You had me a BBQ... LOL!! 😁
LOL! Gio, is the Bacolod City Tourism Office giving you any front money for all the free publicity?😂😂😂
Hahahahaha! Bacolod is really a hard sell. Your guest looks not so convinced about Bacolod and was just forced to "like" it. Because his GF lives there.
Have u been to Bacolod?
I"m quite content here living just north of Bacolod. Of course, I'm 71 so I don't need a wild nightlife.
@@LosPeregrinosdeCamino yes. I have relatives there and I'm a frequent visitor.
a hard sell for "you"... Others just like it, to each his own
@@matdaibang1215 hipos nlng da to ah, kng iloilo imu dra ka eh.
Bacolod is no where near as nice as Iloilo City....much dirtier.....no bike trails while Iloilo City has the most of any city in PH....I ride along the river on the Esplanade and there is no trash in the river or on the Esplanade....none...some of the outlying areas you will see some trash but that is the stark difference between the two cities. Iloilo has much less traffic....fewer jeepney's and trikes and big streets with multiple lanes....Bacolod is dirty and heavy traffic....it takes almost a half hour to get out of Bacolod and into the countryside.....Iloilo is more expensive so that's probably why Gio and this guy are in Bacolod. No comparison whatsoever...plenty of mountains and waterfalls within 30 minutes from the city here.....Guimaras Island is awesome for snorkeling and beaches....I have been here in Iloilo for 14 months....only 4 brownouts to date that I can remember though I do travel a lot so there might have been more but all new construction here the infrastructure is underground.
haha...Gio, your influence is gonna possibly result in MORE white people (males) choosing to retire here, I'll bet. I've lived here for nearly 10 years and for someone over 60 it's a pretty laidback lifestyle. Not much nightlife; socializing means breaking in to the social fabric locally here which is...challenging even for people who come here from other parts of the Philippines. I know a lady who's lived here for 50 years and is definitely a part of the society but still...even 50 years later she's viewed by local society as an outsider. Imagine being a white guy! Not that you can't make inroads and enjoy a life here--obviously you, Gio, are managing it.
I honestly think most expats are happier in other places. Many aren't a fan here.
@@GiointhePhilippines it's all kinda relative. Of the myriad expats I'm familiar with, many married to Filipinas, of course, these guys are in their 60s or 70s and Bacolod suits their needs more than adequately. All that being said, I fantasize about living in Thailand--Chiang Mai or elsewhere, but I satisfy myself with regular/irregular visits for up to 3 weeks over there. I'm a strong proponent of accepting diversity of preference. If, however, most expats are happier in other places, it begs the question why YOU chose this place???
Iloilo is safer than bacolod and it has more infrastructure
No Doubt Iloilo is way better than B……
35 is usually (biblically) married with children. Good luck 🙄
Unfortunately, it seems most guys make the same mistakes :
1/ End up in the Philippines because someone else told them it was good. In reality Thailand is far better in every respect and cheaper. So no proper research.
2/ Then chasing a woman and ending up where she is. Wrong way around, should find a good location first and then find a woman there.
3/ His friend is building a house. Another huge mistake as he can never sell it or even own it . Fine until the relationship fails.
In any case he can now live with his sub-optimal decisions and will likely go crazy with all the problems in the Philippines. It’s only a matter of time lol
nice inerview
I didnt like Bacolod, to dirty and noisy, but maby better in the province...?
BGC allows you an oasis from all the negative aspects of the PH. So that you can take trips to enjoy the good parts but not have to live there full time. It’s like going back to the west but only fraction of the price.
Simple answer Bacolod is a bigger city and not a low sea level situated in a rice field like Iloilo City
Bacolod famous for Piayays, Chiken insal and Maskara
Iloilo i think is more modern and progressive compared to to bacolod honestly speaking
A lot of CEBUANOS / CEBUANAS from Cebu, Negros and even from Mindanao are always obsessed, hateful and envious towards Iloilo.
