  • Marshall DSL vs Peavey 5150.
Guitar is a Kramer Night Swan with a JB Pickup. Leo is playing guitar while I switch amps on a Radial Amp Switcher. Both amps are going through a Mesa 2x12 V30 cab.
Recording quality is not great but its true in the room with an iphone. I will be doing high quality recordings in the future.

At first I liked the Peavey more, then the more I listened I realized how well the Marshall sits. It would absolutely sit beautifully with a live band or in a mix. The Peavey has all this "loose" low end that I could see interfering with the bass and kick and get mushy. I love both sounds, but Marshall would be my choice.

@Nicholas Turner The JB is also kind of loose on the low end, which is more apparent on 5150's.

Marshall is louder here. The ear will always pick the loudest. And peavey would sound fuller if louder. All in all through the same cab most amps are more similar than you think.

I own both these heads and they're both rather loose amps in the low end. My theory is that looser amps are easier to play though. I just use a boost pedal to dial in a tighter tone. I use an SD-1 on the Marshall and a Maxon 808 on the 5150.

Great to hear powerchords all the way...too many other channels just like to show abbilities of the player, one lead after the other...your test really shows the difference...thanx, nice job done !!

I watched this video again and I need to redo it. The settings on the 5150 were how my friend set it who is doing the playing while I switch. I need to set it how I usually set the amp. Ill make another soon.

The problem is you can't one for one different amps unless you try to EQ them the same, which is impossible because the preamp and tone shaping circuits are going to be different on each. You would have to do multiple comparisons, switching between channels, gain and preamp settings etc.

That 5150 tone would never in a million years cut through in a band setting holy shit.

I clicked on the video 100% biased that the Marshall was going to kick ass, but the 5150 was just too good.

5150's can sound much better than that.
You set the 5150's Gain on 8. You can get saturated face melting tones with a 5150's Gain on 3 or 4. Setting it to 8 makes the amp into unplayable mush. Set it to 5 or maybe 6 at the absolute max. 8 is insane. Also, turn the Presence up. Current setting is WAY too dark. A 5150's Presence doesn't really even start to do anything until around 6 or 7. Set it somewhere between 7 and 9 for clarity. No wonder the Marshall kills it here.

Correct. The 5150 doesn’t shine with the gain maxed. I set mine at 4 and there is plenty of gain and the bottom end stays focused. This is not good 5150 tone here.

Put them together as 2 rigs stereo or wet dry rigs. I have that set up and they play beautifully together

JCM 2000 blows the 5150 out of the water in this particular video.

@@Chugg.Norris yeah people need to understand how their amp settings work before making a video like this

  • @gab.lab.martins

The gain is too high on both amps, the lows are too high on the Peavey and its mids are too low. The voicing on the JCM2000 is better overall, but you can get the 5150 to sound A LOT better.
