Making A Leather Pancake Sheath - Leather Craft

- In this leather craft video I make a simple leather pancake sheath. The sheath is designed to hang at a slight angle on the belt to allow for easy extraction of a pocket knife or any other tool that one would want to carry on their side. The sheath is made from two pieces of 2.3mm thick vegetable tanned leather that has been glued and hand stitched together. The design is very simple with not much tooling or dying involved, just a single stamped cross, makers mark and some initials. I hope you enjoy watching the making process of this simple leather pancake sheath.

Try a refillable marker for the edge dye. That’s what I use and it works great.

Very nice. Love the simple clean professional look. I tend to always get carried away with carving and stamping everything. What brand/size is your slot punch? I've got to break down and get one, I do em with holes and straight lines and I'm pretty good but they're a pain and never quite as clean as a punch. Care to share your pattern?
1-3/4” C.S. Osborne punch. If you make a lot of belt slots it is well worth the price. Sorry I don’t have any available patterns.
Do you find the gum trag in the inside makes knives slide out when you bend over, or is there still enough friction in the sheath to keep them from sliding?

It is possible, just experiment with some scraps first and work out a good pattern.

Maybe but I can’t think of any off the top of my head. But I’m sure they do.
Is there a video to figure out the pattern you need for your own particular knife. I'm retired and just make things for my children and grandchildren, plus close friends. I can't afford to buy patterns or templates for everything.
