Convicted rapist Steven van de Velde has been allowed to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Andy Anson, chief executive of the British olympic association, gives #TimesRadio his reaction.

As a reminder Steven Van de Velde was 6 days from 20 and she was 12 years old when he did this.
Meanwhile in Japan they banned a 19 year old amazing gymnast for having a cigarette and a drink.

I used to be a big fan of the Olympics, but with each passing games it becomes clearer that there is a big gap between the Olympic ideals and the reality. This is just more proof of the facade.

Its sickening that the BBC presenter is being criticised rather than the Dutch Olympic committee. This is insane. How was she supposed to know one of them could have such convictions.

@Ron-yd3fn wow I couldn't believe it would be possible. I stand corrected. I had assumed she just wished him good luck spontaneously but it was during an interview in which she clearly knew his history. But it still stands why the Dutch are allowing this. They deserve most criticism.

the olympic games survived a PLO terrorist attack, financial issues, the cold war and World War Two. It has survived boycots by the USA and Russia (USSR)- I think it has quite a bright future. as it makes a lot of money and it remains very popular.

I'm not so sure about that, I did heard that this olympic only 2 cities applied to host it compared to the previous ones, leading to the Olympic committee to pick Paris for 2024 and the other one for 2028 (I forgot which city was it). Sure, it may survive as a tradition, but not much incentives to host it anymore in this economy....

Actually it was more of a case that his Olympic committee (the people who select athletes from his country) thought he had paid sufficient for his crime and was eligible. It’s the committee of his country that let him in. If there’s anyone to point fingers at in that specific situation it’s them.

He has received the just punishment for his crime, which he admitted. He has grown up and changed. He is married with a child. He is a top class sportsman. Of course he should be competing at the Olympics. He is not staying at the Olympic Village.

If this person has completed his sentence then, unless there are continuing restrictions, he should be allowed to compete.
