    Having changed countless hundreds of gallons of oil in my 55 years as a car/truck mechanic, I can’t remember not filling the crankcase with oil immediately or as soon as possible after draining it. And especially if a garage has multiple techs as Rays has, it’s a bit unnerving to me his having to ask the other guy did he tighten the drain plug, install the oil in the motor, etc. Bottom line, the guy that starts the job should finish the job, even if it’s a fairly simple thing as an oil change. This is how vehicles are released back to the customer without oil in the motor and as a result costing the shop hundreds if not thousands of dollars!

    Sharing to answer your question about the months names not all aligning on the calendar has two main elements. The Roman ruler Numa Pompilius is credited with adding January and February to the calendar to create the 12-month year (~452 BC). What you were recalling was that the name of the 7th month of the year (which had been the 5th month in the ancient Roman calendar), was changed (~ 44 BC) from Quintilis to July in honor of Julius Caesar, and the name of the 8th month, (which had been the 6th month), was changed from Sextilis to August in honor of Augustus Caesar.

    27:35 The spool valve "filter assembly" gaskets are like 5 bucks each from Honda. They are definitely readily available, just call the Honda/Acura stealership parts counter. They do leak over time, as you noted the gasket was flat. It's a common part to replace in this era of Honda 2.4l engines - I've done it in my Honda Element. Honda p/n 15815-RAA-A02 for my Element and I know it applies across several other models with similar engines. Good to have on hand for any Honda owner, "filter assy., spool valve" and also the "Filter ass., VTC" (honda p/n 15845-RAA-A01 for my Element) which also leak and are a bit harder to get to.
    But regardless: a lot of times replacing the entire solenoid pack is unnecessary and aftermarket packs are known to be less durable than OEM, one of a couple Honda items that should get replaced with OEM. Also: If you get the CEL for an issue with this part, even without an oil leak, a lot of times replacing the filter will solve it, or running 20% MMO in your oil (drain a quart, fill a quart with MMO) will clear it.
    The oil pressure sending units are another common leak as well. The owner of this CRV shouldn't really be surprised that both of these leaks happened. It's almost guaranteed to leak as the cars get older. I found it pretty easy to remove by taking off my passenger front tire and coming from the underneath/side, personally, and it removes very quickly with a 24mm 12 point deep well socket. Nice to see a video on a job I've already done, that's for sure. Thanks for uploading this one!

    • @jubblybits6155
      @jubblybits6155 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Additionally, only 7.2 ft lbs or 86.4 inch lbs for the spool valve or it’ll flatten the gasket and leak again. He over torqued this one without a doubt.

    • @jubblybits6155
      @jubblybits6155 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Also. It was a mistake using an aftermarket spool valve. They’re all absolute garbage. All it needed was a gasket. If he just threw the perfectly good spool valve away he screwed this customer. The aftermarket won’t last long.

    • @brassmule
      @brassmule 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrRedHotChiliMan The other common Honda leak is the power steering pump, which is usually the result of two o-rings getting old. 91345-RDA-A01; 91370-SV4-000 are the part numbers, I believe. Dorman also sells a kit for it - 926-157. When you do the VTC filter, you have to remove the power steering pump, so it's easy to knock both out at the same time.
      They're great motors, easy leaks to correct - I run 20% MMO through the last 500 miles of oil changes and never had the codes pop for these filters. I think the new synthetic MMO is only 10% in an oil change and you can leave it in the whole interval, so that's even easier.
      If it's AWD, obviously change your diff fluid. Drain and fill your transmission occasionally, replace power steering and brake fluid. The thing will run forever. Elements with 500k miles exist on the original engines.

    Love the content as always. Slight correction, correct me if im wrong, but what was leaking oil was the V-tech solenoid. V-tech is different from VVT because it doesn't change the timing of the camshaft but rather engages a larger cam lobe to increase how much the valves open to let in more air. Not trying to Reeeee but im sure the honda guys will when they notice.

Watching you work by feel on that VVT-i solenoid assembly reminded me of R&R'ing one of the upstream O2 sensors on my old '98 V6 Ford Contour with the part buried deep under the firewall and my arm wedged in there up to my elbow. The Ford techs at the local dealership were both impressed and highly relieved that I did the work (without a lift) and that they didn't have to -- service writer said that the techs draw straws as to who gets that job on V6 Contours and Mercury Mystiques. 😂 Best wishes for continued success in the new year Ray. 👍

    Tip: if it is hard to pinpoint a leak, wash the engine (areas). Then blow it dry with a leaf blower. Take the vehicle out for a Spirited Drive. Then reinspect your leak area. If it is a leak, it should be obvious. On the other hand a small weap may require more driving.

    Anyone notice how close that AC compressor is to the front of the vehicle. Back in the 50's, 60's hell even the 80's there was much more room between the engine and the front of the car. Now everything's packed so tight up front. You used to be able to get in minor accidents without totalling out a vehicle. Makes you wonder if the design changes were, in part, so they could sell more cars.

    In the old Julian (Roman) calendar, as observed in Europe, the year started March 25!! (This was close to the vernal equinox.) So October was the 8th month! In 1583 the Gregorian calendar started skipping the leap day every 400 years to compensate for the true length of a year (i.e. slightlly less than 365.25 days). In 1752 England finally changed to only the Georgian Calendar making Jan. 1 the start of the year (and also added 11 days so Easter would be after the vernal equinox.)

    I can see doing the driveshaft delete if you’re driving in a climate where there’s marginal difference between FWD and AWD. I have a CRV as well, but the AWD has paid for itself many times over in winter conditions. Yes, FWD is fine in winter, but the AWD makes all the difference in the world if I have to drive in the day or two after the snow flies. (Especially where I live - way too many people do stupid things driving on fresh snow that packs and polishes it)

    • @applepoop10
