How to configure a Cisco switch

  • There are some recommended steps you have to take before installing a new switch in the network:
    Reset the switch to factory default
    Delete the vlan database
    Upgrade the switch
    Disable VTP
    Set STP to RSTP
    Enable portfast on all access ports by default
    Enable bpduguard and bpdufilter on all access ports
    Set the switch hostname.

    Thank you for sharing this video. However, I would like to ask why VTP Protocol is not best practice on Switches, incase I have about 700 vlans which is created and they all are need to be aware by the rest of the switches, I was of the opinion that VTP can help me with this process, but watching your video now, you made mention that VTP is not best practice, please can you further explain, thank you

      Imagine this, if you add a new switch that only has 1 vlan but with a higher revision it will propagate its vlan database information to other switches. Meaning, all the other switches will delete their vlans to have only 1 vlan.
