If only they still did this. The thing about this kind of music is that it was soft, easy listening dreamscape love music. It's soft to hear and not intense and harsh.
There is a posting on YT from November 1977 that has the more familiar music; I have also seen a very clean 1978 Beta transfer with the second version of the music. I believe this is the first pre-1977 footage of HBO I have ever seen. The track heard here is a variation of what I believe to be HBO's "main theme" at the time -- that version can be heard accompanying an HBO animation on a 1975 Computer Image Corp. demo reel, as well as on a 1978 Sullivan & Marks reel.
I was thinking that this "theme" could have been part of a custom package for HBO, as opposed to generic production music, thus the different variations/moods of the theme itself.
I didn’t know that this sign off had an alternate score nor did I know that it dates back to 1976. Thanks for the upload, I love discovering different versions of things like these!!!!

I would estimate that this version of the sign off had been in use since the spring of 1975 around the time HBO introduced its logo a few months before it went national via satellite on 9/30/75. It was likely gone by mid-1977 (along with the.dove slide that preceded it) and replaced by the more familiar version. And yes, that is the same music that ended up on Home Theater Network, with the music for the dove slide being used for the Travel Channel tags on HTN in the 1980s.. HBO likely ceased using that music around mid-1977, well before HTN signed on in September 1978. HTN kept that music package for its entire run until it went dark in early 1987.
I'm starting to think that this was a custom music package for HBO, rather than just library stuff. Since HTN used it later, this reminds me somewhat of a similar instance of repurposed theme music (ESPN using the old Satellite News Channel package for Sportscenter in the mid-to-late '80s).
The different sign-off music is very much reminiscent of the themes heard on the graphics demo reels for Sullivan & Marks from 1978 and Computer Image Corporation from 1975 (the latter being used to show graphics made for HBO), as well as promos/IDs for the Home Theater Network.

Back in early-mid 70s my brothers friend had a apartment with cable TV and went away for the weekend. He said we could stay there over weekend and watch his TV, first time I ever saw cable and or HBO.

By 1977, the sign-off animated sequence switched its music to a cut of "The Great Entertainment Alternative," which was HBO's slogan at the time.

Only once did I ever see a sign-off on HBO after staying up really late on a Sunday night to watch the animated "Watership Down".

The defunct 1980's movie channel HTN(Home Theater Network) used a variation of the sign off music for promos,bumpers,and feature intros.
I wasn't born yet, but this is so BEAUTIFUL! On a side note, I think they were inspired by Australia ending their TV with two kangaroos to do this.
