  • I switched from amp and pedal board to the GX100 and here I demonstrate some of my thoughts after using it for a while.
    Hopefully this helps you decide if you want to get one or not.

    Freakin' BOSS! They very often unexpectedly just blow my mind with their continuing accomplishments and attention to Quality and even concerning the quality of the effects themselves. I think I was accustomed to overlooking and taking good 'ole affordable Boss for granted since the 80's until I understood their high level of expertise and historic significance better.

      @@TheJudy79 Having owned both for a while now, the Stomp gets points for it's small size, but for quality of sound and ease of use the Boss wins-- hands down. Another point for the Stomp is the plentiful amount of great patches other folks have made & share. Both are good units, and have their strengths/weaknesses.

    I have the same history , with Kempers and Amps. I am now very satisfied with my GX 100 and a Harley Benton 2 x 12 FRFR Box. For Home use I play it over a my Kemper Power Cabinet and for recording straight into the DAW Interface . My to go Amp Model is the Boutique Amp. It can do everything from clean to crunch. My Gain Stages are the T-Scream and the Clean Boost. The Kemper Cabinet is a special Tip I can recomment. Try it with your GX100 and I promise you will be surprised. The negative thing about that speaker , it's not very loud.

    Thanks for a great video Andy, I've had mine for 3 weeks and I'm well pleased. Love the tones, reverbs and delays but I'm a modulation guy as well and the stereo chorus', overtone and pitch shifting are a joy. So much more to discover.
    The touch screen and controls are ok but everything is much easier when you use the usb to connect to a laptop or pc to the Boss Tone Studio software. Top tip though, is to make sure you save your changes before changing to another patch or you're in a world of pain as you lose all your patch settings.
    Agree with you also about the volume pedal. I've upgraded from an old GT-10 and am used to a much more substantial and solid feel to the FV. I've had to adjust the FV settings to the slowest setting to get a smooth volume transition. I also set the volume to remain 30% on, in the fully off position, in some patches so it doesn't kill the sound if you accidentally pull off too far.
    I also picked up a good tip from Glen DeLuane; You can set the Tuner so that when the FV is in the fully off position the polyphonic tuner cuts in automatically. A handy feature...

    I know this video is old, but you can tighten the pedal on the GX-100 to offer more resistance as well as change its sensitivity to give you a different response. I think the included pedal works great but it definitely won't hold up against a standalone expression pedal.

    Thanks Andy, this is really useful. The main problem I have with programmable systems is for live use. I can program up a sound at home that's perfect, but when I get to rehearsals or gigs, what worked at home often needs to be tweaked for the outside world. With most devices I've used in the past, editing a patch just using the screen and controls on the device isn't a practical option, but I don't want to be booting up a laptop before a gig starts to use patch editor. The GX-100 looks like it's easy enough to tweak patches in the device itself without a laptop and for me that makes it worth considering for live use.

      You're right, although with the devices I've used in the past (and the Boss Katana I currently use), you'd still have to boot up a laptop to get to the global EQ settings. The attraction with the the GX-100 is that it looks like you could produce your patches just using the device, without ever having to use a laptop.

      Same here. I’ve owned many multi-effects units. Zoom G7, G3, G2, Boss ME50, ME 70, GT8, GT100, GX100, GT1000, Helix LT and PodGo. Eleven Rack and Headrush. And finally a Mooer GE300. Bought and sold all my pedals, moving between $2,000 worth of pedals on boards and the MFs…
      The thing that always was the Achilles heal of MF units for me was/is the user interface. Specifically the ability, or lack thereof, to reach down and quickly make changes. Not dramatic reprogramming, but minor tweaks like volume of a preset or the delay mix.
      I am currently very happy with my expensive pedals on a large board. Except… it’s so frickin heavy. Tweaked my 61 year old back yesterday wrestling it out the door to the back of the Pathfinder. Not again.
      My wife sez “you’re getting too old for all that” So, I ordered another GX-100.
      I got a little frustrated with it last year when I had owned it. I think I can work around it this time.
      It does have the best UI I have used so far. Most notibly you can assign the 4 knobs below the display to control many different parameters. Example, set a know on each preset as a volume, one as delay mix, the other two EQ.
      One thing to be aware of, Boss MFs have SO many ways you can change parameters/settings that its easy to get paralysis by analysis. Keep it simple. Tweak as you get more accustomed to the possibilities.

    Thnx for the vid. Was awaiting the new Mooer device, but am quit disappointed in what they made of it. Was hoping of a better (touchscreened) version of the GE300. And now this vid passes my eyes. Like others said, was a bit forgotten on Boss in al the turmoil of Fender, Headrush, etc...
    Hoever, 2 questions, and I hpe you still answers those on a year old vid ;-)
    - The icons seem very simple. Isn´t it difficult to distinguish different versions of delay or drive or reverb? 9Does it even HAVE different versions of those)
    - Is it possible to create multiple signal chains? I main like that you can by switching a patch or something like that, you get an entirely differently designed chain active?

      Hey dude! Thanks for the comment. Yeah it’s a really good unit! I’ve actually moved over to the Line 6 HX STOMP XL, so I’d encourage you to at least take a look at that if you haven’t yet.
      Yes, there’s different types of delays. I think a handful of delays and reverbs.
      There will be a lag when switching from one preset to another. The way you get around this is by using one preset in manual mode and basically use it like a normal pedal board.

    Very tempted by this unit! I have a Hotone Ampero and it has tons of potential, but it's just not intuitive or user friendly at all. I feel like it's constantly fighting me instead of helping me. The GX100 looks a lot easier to use.

    • @andydavid9

    • @UTAH100
      @UTAH100 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? I hoave the Hotone Ampero 2 and barely read the manual and I am up and running. The only main complaint thus far is that I have been unable to change guitar tones while overdubbing. Is that true? If so, it might have to go. That would be a huge oversight. That is the main point of an overdub- layer "different" tones and it is important to me.
      The cleans are nice- the crunch tones are somewhat meh. The effects so far are ok but not amazing. In fairness, I have not even used the PC editor yet. Mostly using the stock presets. I really like the form factor and touchscreen. It locks so no guitar cable will effect the screen- unlike with this Boss.
      Do you have any tips for me? Does changing the IR or Cabs make a big difference?

      I bought a Hotone Ampero new in 2019 and it turned into a brick exactly two years afterwards just when the warranty expired. It sounded really bad up until the third firmware update (18 months after release) and the latency was so bad it was impossible to record anything with it. The sounds after the 4th or 5th update were ok at best. My Nux MG30 that I paid much less for completely destroys it in every way.

    • @UTAH100
      @UTAH100 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lessthanpinochet I believe you. I bought the Ampero II. Cleans were good. Dirty- no great. Touchscreen good. Looper was great except I could not change the tone for the overdub without changing the original part- epic FAIL. DSP was light. When they release an Ampero III, it will have good potential as a backup modeler. Great form factor and low price. That said, it if bricks in 2 years the value is not really there. The Nux MG30 is pretty decent. When you want to upgrade, look at a lightly used FM3, or if you can swing it, a FM9 Turbo. You will be happy!

    • @FunkAdelik
      @FunkAdelik 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The GX100 does offer dual signal chains. As far as the blend, I think you are referencing the mixer block that comes after the divider, which you can assign to the expression pedal to change the mix between either in dual mode. If you could post a picture of your GT1000 mixer and the overall signal chain on your main patch, I could attempt to rebuild it and let you know how it works. The GT1000 has a lot more computational power, so you can have many more effects, but for dual chains and a three or four different effects, the GX100 will work great.

  • @mathumphreys

    I've been using my GX-100 for about 6mths now and I'm happy with the sounds. The biggest problem for me is that the GX-100 changes settings when my guitar lead touches the touch screen while I'm playing. The touchscreen on a floor unit is a problem for me.

    • @UTAH100
      @UTAH100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That should be an easy fix. Your are a guitar player- be creative. Run your cable under the unit or use a rubber band to tie it back and prevent it from hitting the screen. You could also very easily affix a small plastic cover over the screen with some double sided tape or velcro. Cover it with a large magnifying glass and you will see the display even better! My new Ampero II has a LOCK button. I guess that is to help prevent the issue you are having. Really like the unit- only $400 and sounds good- especially the clean tones. I am not however able to change tones when I overdub/looper. Can you do that on the Boss? Like one clean loop and a dirty overdub? I find that lack of that feature annoying and shortsighted. That is the whole point of looping- to layer different tones.

    And is this pedal board overkill if I just want to use the effects? For over 10 years now I have been using Boss GT-8 and GT-100 in my setup but I don't care for the amp simulation, I just use the effects in conjunction with the four cable method. But Boss keeps focusing more and more on amp simulation, so I'm probably paying a serious amount for something I'm not using, but I don't know what could be a better alternative, I'm so used to my Boss effects... and I need that midi functionality to switch my amp channels.

    What’s the difference between a gx and gt?

    • @andydavid9
      @andydavid9  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The differences that I’m aware of - are that the GT1000 has more foot switching capabilities because it’s physically a bigger unit. Also boss’s more expensive 500 series effects are in the GT1000 and 1000 core but not in the GX100.
      I actually bought the GT1000 core and then found out about the gx100, so I returned the GT to buy the GX and I honestly don’t notice a difference between 2 of the same patches.

    How do you set the levels so when changing patches (presets) at a live gig, the volume levels (lufs) are all the same/very close? Do you use the Master in the effects chain, or the Level on the preamp?

    • @andydavid9
      @andydavid9  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m using the master in the effects chain dude. You get a view of the overall level for each patch so you can manually adjust it on the fly.
      However, if I’m going from a clean channel amp set up, to a dirty channel, sometimes the difference can be quite a lot so it might be a case of turning the level up on the amp for cleans as they run very quiet.

    Ah crap. A knob fell off your Schecter? :( I have a GT-1000 and I have it boiled down to 5 patches. But I agree, the dynamic realism is exceptional. Also like that they don't reference actual amps. So it's more to what you like vs what you "think" you should be using. TBH, most people don't know what amps sound like anymore anyway. So were already in a post-amp world. And drunk bar punters don't care about fancy gear, or how complex your patch sounds. They care if it sounds like tune you play..and whether you can play. Other than that, they're drunk, they could care less :). Best Regards and Best Wishes!

I hooked up my Boss Looper to it but same deal until I realized I needed to go OUT to the Looper and use the headphones on the looper, not the Ampero. Seems sorted for now. BTW, the RC500 is a great looper and it has basic drum rhythm machine which sound decent- not amazing, but does the job. It's high quality audio- very high bit-rate or something. You can hear it.

      Try tweaking the IR's, Cabs, sims, output options and stuff. Not sure you'll manage to go somewhere.. I bought the ME90, which seems very close to this, and after a few days of intensive work trying all the cabs, IR and stuff, just couldn't make it sound good when OD and distortion, plugged directly in a very good tube amp (tweed style PTP glorious thing). It just sounded horrible and artificial.
      What I found out on forums after sending it back is there is a tweak (not mentioned in the manual) to disengage the IR, to have a decent sound on a tube amp.
      But man, all that bullshit AIRD and stuff just to find out you can't use it on a tube amp without cutting half of the technology off?
      I mean, these things seem to be engineered at 90% for the digital crowd that play on monitors or full range speakers, plugged on a mixing desk or sound card.
      I think it's useless to buy these devices if you plan to plug it in a vintage style tube amp
      It'll totally ruin your beautiful tone.
      I'm not at all and old schmuck who doesn't want to use modern technology.. I'm synth and electronic music geek as well, very aware of every new stuff
      But these modeling devices are made for computers, not amps (good ones)

      Hey dude, I don’t play metal so not the best at dialling in a decent tone for that genre. But I’ve recently picked up a line 6 HX stomp XL. It’s a lot better than the GX100. The high gain tones are a lot more thick and realistic and I’ve found that the delays are better too.

      Yes and they sound and feel great under the fingers, and I've been playing through valve amps for 40 plus years and mine sounds and feels just like playing through a valve amp, amazing how they do it, but you have to create your own tones ideally to get your sound including changing the cab models tweaking the mic position to your liking, which made a massive difference also changing to the 4x12 or 8x12 stack,I have created my own using the BOSS X high gain amp also tweaking the amp settings for gain and scrolling through and tweaking amp settings, adding reverb, delay, wha, and a Tube Screamer with drive and level around 1 o'clock for an 80s Hard Rock/Metal rhythm and singing lead tones.
      It's like most modellers, no one creating these tones knows what your ideal tones are, so they are just starting points as only you know what you like.
      Too many people think they'll sound brilliant for them out of the box, but rarely do as only you can create your tones.

      I'd agree for the "in the room" tone. I personally think that these units sound a lot better for recordings, and are easier to dial in. A mic'd up amp will never sound the same in a mix to how it does in the room. But at the end of the day, it is totally subjective.
