Couldn’t view the livestream “live”, but watched recording. No mention of thermistor resistance value- is it 1,000 Ohm or 1,000K Ohms? Reason I’m asking is because both are available and buyer might not know resistance determines temperature range, and wind up with wrong one.
You're so good! You can get fuel tank caps with a gas gauge built into it. Some fancy ones have a "Hall effect" transistor built into them to connect to a remote gauge as well. By the way, for me to get fully lit, it takes more than a minute, usually a couple of six-packs and a few shots.
As the thermister warms (due to current passing through it), the resistance decreases. While the thermistor is immersed in fuel, this cools it and the resistance increases. The current involved to make this happen is very small, there's not enough heat to ignite the fuel. I recommend the positive feed should be connected directly to the 0.085A (85ma?) lamp first, to eliminate maximum current possible to 85ma, through the tank ntc resistor dangling in the fuel. Also, a 250ma (1/4A) fuse can be used in the power feed to avoid any unwanted surprises.
My low gas indicator is, Engine stalls out, go in garage and get a Beer, come back hour later? and motor will not start, check gas and in Sling Blade Voice say It ain't got no gas in it! Light bulb in my head lights up! Ah Ha! I need! It's a very slow system, but works every time! Ha Ha Ha! Good Video Taryl You can use this circuit for several other application!🍻
I also have a TimeSleeper and yeah, the lid slides off when I am 4 feet away emptying the grass catcher. Has bothered me for 2 years. So although I like the low fuel indicator idea. You have solved a big issue with that kotter pin to stop it from sliding !! Saved the day. One thing about the Fuel light indicator is that you might only see it on a cloudy day. In bright daylight it will be hard to tell. So just strap a small person to the side of the mower to keep an eye on the fuel window and make sure he has a good set of lungs to yell when you're low. .. problem solved.
Love the idea of a low fuel light. I'm going to put one on mine. I'm not a fan of those type connectors. I've had a lot of bad luck with them. When I was wiring race cars. I soldier and heat shrink everything now.
That is pretty cool, great skit as well. I think you should add these to your online store and maybe include the link to the video to show people how to do the job. Merry Christmas 🎄 to all of you!!
I would have thought (being you tied into the presumed hour meter wiring for the ground) you could have simply used 2 male spade connectors to get the power and ground thru the plug. Other than that, it looks like a pretty clean install.
Good modification! Great info! Maybe that plug for he hour meter had a hot with key on included with the ground you used and you wouldn't have needed to tap into that hot wire you used.
Oh the scotch locks work, it’s when they get all corroded and crap is when they don’t work. You probably don’t have an issue cause you’re not driving a lawn mower through salt covered roads. Couple years of that is when they start messing up and get the green death.
@@antagonizerr Pretty much every motorcycle made has one in the fuel tank . Of course those thermistors are rated as safe to use in gasoline! Great info! Thermistor value is unclear in video- you mention 1000 Ohm but then said 1000k. Checked transcript, but still fuzzy. Would you please restate? Thx and Merry Christmas!
Small yards this isn’t a big deal but with acreage long walks back to get a fuel can this is a great upgrade. But for a generator this is a major upgrade.
Love to know how the low fuel light works out in real life. Seems like the sloshing around due to bumps in the yard and making turns would cause it to give a false 'Got Gas' indication.
Really good idea Daryl :) Only problem is that when the light comes on your out of gas and you get to walk back to the garage to grab a gas can. I have a good idea for that. Now lets make a reserve tank in the gas tank. Just put an extra fuel line about an inch up from the bottom of the gas tank and put a electronic solenoid on the old main line with a switch on your control panel. When your mower is normally running its pulling fuel from the line that is an inch up. When it runs out you have your original light telling you that you are out of gas and then a toggle switch to change gas lines and restart the mower. Then drive the mower back and fill up on gas :) How's that everyone?
Would this work on a small desal tractor? The fuel tank is close to the engine so the desal fuel can get warm. So, if the fuel is warm with the light be ON all the time.
So you had to add extra wire and you soldered it and used heat shrink on it. But if Scotch locks are so good why don't you Scotch locks on them instead. The problem with Scotch locks are they're not waterproof so They corrode the wire if it gets wet. Great idea though. Now I just need to get a rider. So I can do it for myself. Merry Christmas

I have replaced more of those wire taps than I can count. I repaired trailers at my last job and many trailer manufacturers use those. After about 5 years in the salt belt and they are all corroded to the point that all of them have to be replaced.
I just use the hour meter. If you fill the tank full before each run its usually consistent on fuel usage to determine how long it takes to empty the tank.
As always very educational if I may make a suggestion maybe you could show us how to install a fuel gauge on a piece of equipment that doesn't have one.
Someone might be able to use the LED if they run a reed switch relay to turn on/off the LED light. Reed switch relays typically consume around 50 - 80 MA of power. I think a magnetic relay might need more power though. Nothing wrong with what your showing Taryl - Yes, some JD's & a few Cub Cadet's use that method for low fuel indication. I got a JD STX-38 with gas cap gauge. I have to lift the lid frequently to see how much gas is in the tank.
