I've lost count of the number of times I've watched this film but Vatanen in a 405 coupe on Pikes Peak is God. This is one of the most amazing pieces of driving I will ever seen. His speed and car control is mind blowing.
I was always a firm believer that a racing driver can give 100%, and not one bit more. Giving 101% is called a crash. I believed that right up until I saw this video a couple of years ago. Vatanen did the entirety of Pikes Peak on gravel, and as far as I can tell he was never completely in control of the vehicle. This was basically an 11 minute controlled crash. He drove Pikes Peak- a widowmaker track if ever there was one- at 110% for the entire run. That shouldn't even be possible. It's superhuman. The man is a driving god.
I think that extra 10% is what makes him an artist, as he calls himself. Being able to give 100% means you are a professional, maybe even one of the best in the world. But the extra 10% can only come from someone who has such talent and skill that it becomes a dance. That is true artistry.

And for me, talking about rallying, modern WRC cars are the "real cars". They are so stable and fast that allows the driver to rally thru the stage like never before. True, the car-handling part isn't hard nowadays, but that easier handling is allowing and even forcing the drivers to do things that old-school drivers never did. Basically, I think that modern driver's brains work as hard as how those of old-school drivers did.

I remember watching this a while ago and the scenes where the driver has to look through the glare of the sun and the dust clouds in order to not fly off the cliff still amaze me. This has to be the greatest instances of man and machine reaching perfect symmetry. Every move precise, every correction deliberate, every push on the pedals confident. You can see and hear the absolute determination and fearlessness the driver had on the run. This is racing transcendence--absolutely incredible.

And just when you think this can't get any better, that maniac Vatanen raises his shifting hand to block the sun, driving one-handed on a gravel surface in a high revving monster rallyecar. Simply astonishing. Never tell me that a F1 driver is a better at controlling his car than a rallye driver. Not even Senna. This counts as evidence.
@@Bruh-jr2ep No they dont. You must be thinking of the rallycross versions?! Todays wrc cars lack about 100bhp. Their top speed is limited at 200km/h and they drive like a playstation. Only for the rich kids. It used to be about talent and drivers skills. New cars cannot compare to the old group B cars.
4WS, the rear wheels are turned in the same direction as the front wheels. This helps the cars swiftness in turning , from preventing the car to drift. This mainly depents on how well the computer (that controls this function,) is set and the combination of diferential front / rear - Power distribution and lock. Ari done this better than Rohrl and I think both drivers are amazing (possibly the best). Watching him control the wheel of this car with one hand is outstanding. Just an amazing driver piloting an amazing car

Vatanen didn't win Pikes Peak in 1989. American Robby Unser did win in similar Peugeot 405.
