Brilliant video again. You missed off Hennighan's Top Shop. Best chippy I've ever been to. I live in Coventry but my dad lived in Tywyn. Used to go to that chippy after a round of golf at Mach golf course. Unfortunately my dad passed away two years ago. I love that part of Wales, so beautiful.

Congrats Miss Hubnut, another fab video. You should be paid by the Welsh Tourist Board for presenting North Wales in such an beautiful light. I spent lots of my younger years riding motorbikes in the area around Llangollen where some of my friends lived. One of my friend's mum owned Lloyd George's 'Log Cabin' on the outskirts of Betws-y-coed. We all camped in the grounds and parked our bikes on the tennis court 😁. North Wales will always have a special place in my heart 💖

Our family moved to Upper Corris in 1971 and I had two years at Corris primary school, then went to Tywyn Secondary. Left school in 1978 and joined British Rail at Machynlleth, my fsather working as a postman based at Machynlleth, as well as my sister working in a clothing factory there for a while.
Very sad that the marvelous Welsh tradition of milk bars is over, because Machynleth always had a great atmosphere and great food.

I used to work for Powys County Council and my patch therefore included Machynlleth in the north and Ystradgynlais in the south. It used to take at least two and a half hours to get from one end of the county to the other. A couple of short stretches of dual carriageway and the rest were twisty A and B roads. Summer meant being delayed by dawdling tourists and winter by often terrible weather!
Powys is massive by UK standards. The North/South transport link through Wales is terrible, even up the A487 West coast, but through the middle and East it is atrocious. It is faster to drive from London to Rhyl than from New Quay to Rhyl, although the roads, inefficient as they may be, are at least a bit more interesting than the M6. But when you want to just get from A to B, it can be a bit of a challenge. For those that are unfamiliar with the geography, Machynlleth is not far from the West coast about 20 miles North of Aberystwyth and on the main coast road route, while Ystradgynlais is just North of Swansea in the South. Just a few miles up from the M4

Another fascinating tour from Miss Hubnut. Ian is wrong about the train, it does not go through Llanfair PG - that is the line to Holyhead. Still well worth the scenic ride to Pwllheli!

The only way it would be possible along that line, would be to change at Minffordd onto the Ffestiniog, take a train to Blaenau then change for a train to Llandudno Junction and finally pick up a Holyhead train from there.

@@huwdavies6650 There's always the idea floating round of reconnecting at Porthmadog, using what is now the Welsh Highland Railway, but since the WHR is now part of the Ffestiniog Railway organisation, I suspect this is even less likely.
I do find your presentation much more interesting and enthusiastic than many a so called star of T.V, long may you continue to bring us these gems!

My grandparents ran the Red Lion in the 1960s - so I spent large swathes of time in the town. I remember going to the cinema that was behind the hotel - and I recall it was run by a gentleman called Arthur. They, or rather he - as it was very much a one-man-band, used to show double features - it was amazing. I also used to tag along with Gordon who was the town's streetsweeper ; I adored this gentleman - and have some recollections of him having a cup of tea in certain ladies' househiolds, but telling me it was time for me to go home - in retrospect, defintely nefarious! Thank you for the sweet video!
I think his name was Arthur Prince maybe, he was the projectionist and then some ladies ran the kiosk and one was the usherette!
Yes, Gordon was the street cleaner, a broom and a green bin on wheels with two lids!!! 🤣, if I recall correctly, I'm not sure of his surname as we used to know him as Gordon Arker or Harker maybe, don't know if this was a surname or possibly a nickname!!
Thanks so much for the information. Yes! It was Arthur. I never knew the family names - but spent much time with them as a 7-8 year old. The town was a quiet but lovely place. I would share that some freaky things happened in the Red Lion - I don't believe in ghosts, but I witnessed some unsettling things there. Best wishes from Hangzhou! @@jmevans2727
By any chance, did you ever hear of any oddities seen in the red lion? As a child I spent much time in and around the hotel, and saw a couple of freaky things.

Such an amazing and interesting video. The nature of Wales is very similar to ours (I live in Russia) but our old architecture is mostly destroyed by wars and neglection.

Many a happy holiday in Machynlleth as a child. My grandparents had a caravan on the Garth caravan park.
Excellent video (I know I'm late to the party ... I have no excuse save time to watch!)
It was easy to tell the Welsh train guards from the English train guards on the Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth train (which I think went to Birmingham New Street, I joined at Shrewsbury from Manchester Piccadilly, probably changing at Crewe too, it was 30 years ago so I can't recall!)
One English guard opted for 'Mac' after trying a few times (back in the days the list of destinations was read out by the guard rather than a recording).
From memory the train split but both halves stopped at Dovey Junction (a station that really is in the middle of nowhere!) and occasionally someone sheepishly changed trains ...
As the line was single track the train waited at Borth so the train from Aberystwyth could pass the train to Aberystwyth ... In daylight it is well worth a ride

Once again. A fantastic video! tour of Machynlleth ! To mention the impromptu flyby!! The Airbus A400M "Atlas" does have a very distinctive drone from its four turbo prop engines. From what I saw it defo looked like a C-130! I experience both on a regularly basis living down the road from Lyneham, Wilts!!

Machynlleth is a funny place. Full of Gogs [People with Northern Welsh accents and dialect] who call an ebol [foal in English] a ‘ciw’ [which is actually a chick] and everyone is referred to as ‘tâd’ [father, as in “odw tâd” which is ‘yes father’] for some obscure reason.

So I attacked Google translate and found that 'IECHYD DA' is supposedly the correct spelling!

Excellent video. I’m ashamed to say it took me a few days to get round to watching it, but it was well worth it in the end. Wales clearly is overloaded with picturesque, charming places. I was disappointed to see that Mr HubNut didn’t like an onion bhaji. He’s definitely missing out.
