Singapore has been reaping the benefits of GST over many years. The revenue from GST is used to support various sectors of the country, our society in terms of healthcare costs, different types of subsidies etc. Look at our senior citizens. Their healthcare costs in structured hospitals are heavily subsidized. Regardless of their social status, they have access to very good healthcare services partly because of GST. Not only seniors, but Singaporeans of all ages have access to very good healthcare services. Recently, I was treated in structured hospital. The treatment, medication, consultant-specialist was proivded to me at affordable costs. I was surprised that subsidies were applied to me too though I am not senior citizen. Gst is a consumption tax. The more you consume the more you pay. A very wealthy person may live like a pauper and consume very little hence pay less taxes, which is actually fine by me.
Then you are an idiot. A very wealthy person living like a pauper means living in his own private house with all his bills paid and his children’s education paid in full. A poor person will have to rent, stall his bills for additional payment and his children will need to take loans. In addition to all the consumption tax.
In no advanced economy do the upper-middle income earners pay their share of the taxes. They are the people who write and administer the taxes, so naturally they are the people who have the most little squiggles and twists working in their direction. The upper middles are both the main producers and the main consumers of services. Naturally, then, we are taught that consumption taxes are regressive. They aren't. A tax on services is the only way you can get anything out of the eighth and upward deciles. Attacking a services tax? Not a plausible thing for anyone calling themselves a "Workers'" Party to do.
@Jinping Xitler They can be here because it's safe. And Singapore has transparent financial services. So even if their taxes are raised, there is robust reasons for them to remain.

Our government has proven to be capable of managing revenue properly to ensure Singaporeans ultimately benefit from it. Look at Malaysia, they are in dire straits now in not able to provide affordable healthcare services because they failed to implement GST.

Why Pap gov raises GST,the greatly unwelcome policy, because it is not a populist gov, because it is a realistic gov.If Pap gov were to have choices,it will not raise GST to agigate Singaporeans!
How does one know increasing revenue is pressing when no one knows what the base is. Doesn't pass the smell test.
WP is opposing for the sake of opposing.
Wealth tax is not to curb the wealthy from spending. It’s to make them contribute more. People need to spend money. Especially the wealthy.

"Truer Thoughts Were Never Thought Off, Shared OFF and Recommend As That Of PSP Mr Leong's", as stated below.
PSP's Mr Leong said he will recommend a minimum living wage of S$1,800 a month in take-home pay for all Singaporean workers, working out to about S$2,250 in gross monthly wage.
While Mr Leong said this figure might appear "high", it could be "easily" be reached once schemes like Workfare, GST vouchers and the Progressive Wage Credit were added.
