    Hi! Thanks for the video.
    I was wondering if I could start my asparagus seeds indoors in fall, and have them bigger to be transplanted in the garden, in spring time. I'm in zone 4b.
    Thanks!

    You should soak the seeds for one or two days before planting. Its a gardeners secret to make them sprout a lot faster. Works with most other seeds too

    To avoid transplant shock, I grow all my seedlings in the cardboard tube from a toilet roll. I plant the whole lot into the ground and the cardboard breaks down over time
    Cut each cardboard tube in half

    When do you plant the seedlings into the permanent asparagus bed? I'm starting seedlings now - I've got tons - I put like 10 seeds each into gallon pots and have like 10 pots going and they all seem to be germinating (June now). I'm wondering what the heck to do over the winter, and when to put them into their permanent beds. Also going to have to separate them from each other, at least partially. Any advice would be appreciated.

    • @YouPlantTube
      @YouPlantTube  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Watch my "Garden Tips Transplanting like a boss" where I separate asparagus seedlings into larger pots. Wait until you can see the roots growing through the draining pot hose, before you can permanently plant at final destination also it would be wise to do this before the end of the growing season to give the roots time to adjust to the new location .

    What kind of dirt that we use to grow the asparagus? Also how many month that we can eat the asparagus that grow from seeds and how much does a pack of asparagus seed in canada?

    • @YouPlantTube
      @YouPlantTube  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Asparagus will grow well in lower Canada. PH range for growing asparagus is between 6.5 to 7.0. I would avoid using clay soil to start your seeds or as a growing media and those some people say that sandy loam soil is best for growing asparagus I personally use soil that is more suited for starting seeds such as seed starting soil or perhaps fine potting soil and then when a reasonable root system has been established amend the soil with either compost or potting soil.
      Where I live I can start harvesting as early as late February right up to June of course if the plant has been growing for at least 3 years from seed.

    I planted some asparagus from seed this year. It's growing great. Right now I have 4 plants in a 3 gallon container. They're growing great and everything is fine with them. I imagine a 3 gallon pot is plenty of space for them for at least the first two years. But what about freezing in Winter? I live in a Texas. Of course we have really mild winters but we do get freezing temps. I'm just wondering if a 3 gallon pot will keep the roots from freezing during our mild winters. We might get a night or two of temps in the 20's. I'd like to wait to transplant until next spring or summer. Any thoughts?

    First year growing vegetables in general but asparagus is my favorite vegetable, so I have 4 plants growing, I see videos where people are picking spears off the ground, I am suppose to let the plant grow right? What's the process let this plant dry out every winter etc and watch it regrow the following spring and again dry out etc until spears are as thick as a pencil I can harvest? I'm confused with this veggie:) I would appreciate your help tremendously:)

    • @YouPlantTube
      @YouPlantTube  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Janice Garza First of all you need to plant at least 10 asparagus seeds to be able to have a decent amount spears available at harvest time, once planted do not cut any spears until they become at least three years of age.
      Please watch my other asparagus video "Growing asparagus What you need to know" for further tips.

    Great video. Thanks. I'm just starting to get some asparagus going from seed right now. I've got them in plastic ziplock bags. They're wrapped in damp paper towels. They're 4 days old and I'm not seeing anything yet. What kind of temperatures are you working with? I'm at about 70F under the grow light.

    • @YouPlantTube
      @YouPlantTube  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher William Hogan The ideal temperature for asparagus seeds to germinate is 70° to 80° (°F) Seeds germinate slowly, they can take 2 to 8 weeks to sprout depending on soil temperature. Also I avoid starting seeds in direct sunlight, as for indoors I have yet to try to be able to compare the difference, all the best in succeeding with a 100% germination.

    what is the advantage of planting in Styrofoam containers, and did you make holes at the bottom?

    • @YouPlantTube
      @YouPlantTube  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say one of the advantages is that it keeps the soil cooler and thus less watering, also taking into consideration that it's portable to place into direct sunlight which helps improve root development faster.
      Once the roots have grown sufficiently I had to re-transplant again to its final destination as in this case another raised bed.

    • @YouPlantTube
      @YouPlantTube  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Asparagus seedlings need plenty of full sunlight, 2 months is plenty good to establish a good root system but there's no reason to transplant them if the roots have not exceeded container space. Only when they are close to being root-bound should you transplant to another location.

      One berry may contain anywhere between 1 to 5 but typically have 4 seeds, every seed will produce one asparagus plant, so yes you can just plant one seed and I would recommend you do so unless you have expired seeds.

    I'm growing asparagus from seed, started them in September. I now have asparagus and the fern part is yellowing. Will the asparagus fern out or does the fern die and asparagus keep growing? Will you check out my latests video I plan on keeping them inside until spring.

    • @YouPlantTube
      @YouPlantTube  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheBr20042003 It's quite normal at this time of the year for asparagus to start changing color, cooler night time temperatures are one of the main contributors to this phenomena, Your asparagus seem to be very young, perhaps a month or two old, Probably lacking sufficient hours of direct sunlight or heat.
      Asparagus grows poorly in low temps and indoors.
      It would be advisable to plant seeds early in the year to give the plant time to establish a good root system and thus being able to store energy for the plant to come back in early spring or when the weather warms up.
      Even if you don't succeed try and try again as I do.
      Good luck..

    Μπορείς να γράψεις λίγες οδηγίες για την περίοδο μέχρι να φυτρώσει ο σπόρος; Τα έχεις στον ήλιο; κάθε πότε τα ποτίζεις;

    • @YouPlantTube
      @YouPlantTube  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Βασίλης Δεν είναι απαραίτητο για το σπόρο να είναι σε άμεσο ηλιακό φως για τη βλάστηση, στην πραγματικότητα θα ήταν προτιμότερο για το σπόρο να είναι στη σκιά μέχρι την βλάστηση όταν οι θερμοκρασίες είναι πάνω από 22 Κελσίου. Το πότισμα θα ήταν καλύτερα σε καθημερινή βάση τώρα ότι οι θερμοκρασίες είναι σε υψηλά επίπεδα.
      It is not necessary for the seed to be in direct sunlight for germination, in fact it would be preferable for the seed to be in the shade until germination when temperatures are over 22 centigrade. Watering would be better on a daily basis now that temperatures are in the high.

      Yes, unfortunately, it is a slow process the first year Will Be basically transplanting from one pot to another until it has established a decent root system the second year the asparagus plant should be at a permanent destination which you will just end up watching it grow and third year you can start cutting some asparagus Spears only if they have a larger diameter than a pencil.

      Every time you plant a seed, one would presume that you would be using top quality potting soil and even with those conditions every time you water your seedlings you are also washing away necessary nutrients at the root and therefore transplanting to a new nutrient-dense location is a must for best maximum root growth.

      Absolutely, asparagus is a perennial, which means it will come back every year, even stronger, asparagus produces spears best in full sun, of all the things I grow asparagus is one of my favorites because it can tolerate higher temperatures without any problems. Planting more than one asparagus plant is rewarding because every 2 to 4 days you can see another spear just pushing itself through the soil even at its first year of growing.

      Roman Nowicki I live in the central part of Canada and the asparagus does well here. We have temperatures as low as -40 in the winter and as high as +40 in the summer. The spears can get damaged by the frost in early spring if they are out of the ground but the plant will not be damaged. It grows best here when the ground has warmed up to +20.

    A simpler and more manageable method of watering is to use a small watering can and tape on a nozzle from a mastic tube as seen here:www.thegardenersalmanac.co.uk/Content/W/Water/Watering%20Cans%20(3)%20.JPG

    Nice video but it really could be edited to show how you plant/water one seed. We don't need to see you do many...just one. Great for beginners.

      +Maui Jaictin Subject: Asparagus DO NOT FAIL TO READ THIS AND SEND TO YOUR FAMILY &FRIENDS When I was in the USN, I was stationed in Key West, FL. I worked at the clinic at Naval Air Station on Big Coppitt Key just a few miles north of Key West. The hospital at Key West was for out- patients only, for retired armed forces personnel that lived in the area. If you needed to be hospitalized you were sent to Homestead AFB Florida. I had the day off and just went inside the hospital (Corpman barracks were next to hospital). There was a retired Navy man that worked in the lab and he was very interesting gentleman to talk with. He was a retired biochemist from the USN. He asked me what was going on that day, and I said I had the day off. I wish I was working, as the crew on, today was taking a sailor to Homestead as he had a very bad kidney infection. Now this elderly gent told me the man should have eaten more asparagus, and he wouldn't have that problem. I asked why? I'll never forget him saying, do you eat asparagus? and I said yes, I love them. He replied you notice how your urine stinks after eating asparagus? I said well I never thought it was what I ate but yes it does have a pungent odor. He said, It is because it is detoxifying your body of harmful chemicals!!! This was back in 1986 when I was stationed there and to read this email again I had to share this story...Eat more asparagus, my friends.
      Asparagus -- Who knew?
      My Mom had been taking the full-stalk canned style asparagus, pureed it and took 4 tablespoons in the morning and 4 tablespoons later in the day. She did this for over a month. She is on chemo pills for Stage 3 lung cancer in the pleural area and her cancer cell count went from 386 down to 125 as of this past week. Her oncologist said she will not need to see him for 3 months.
      THE ARTICLE:
      Several years ago I met a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a copy of an article, entitled "Asparagus For Cancer" printed in the Cancer News Journal, December 1979. I will share it here, just as it was shared with me: I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 50 years. Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on his project. We have accumulated a number of favorable case histories. Here are a few examples:
      Case No. 1, A man with an almost hopeless case of Hodgkin's disease (cancer of the lymph glands) who was completely incapacitated. Within 1 year of starting the asparagus therapy, his doctors were unable to detect any signs of cancer, and he was back on a schedule of strenuous exercise
      Case No. 2, A successful businessman, 68 years old, suffered from cancer of the bladder for 16 years. After years of medical treatments, including radiation without improvement, he began taking asparagus. Within 3 months, examinations revealed that his bladder tumor had disappeared and that his kidneys were normal.
      Case No. 3, On March 5th 1971, a man who had lung cancer was put on the operating table where they found lung cancer so widely spread that it was inoperable. The surgeon sewed him up and declared his case hopeless. On April 5th he heard about the Asparagus therapy and immediately started taking it. By August, x-ray pictures revealed that all signs of the cancer had disappeared. He is now back at his regular business routine.
      Case No. 4, A woman had been troubled for a number of years with skin cancer. She developed different skin cancers which were diagnosed by the acting specialist as advanced. Within 3 months after beginning asparagus therapy, the skin specialist said her skin looked fine with no more skin lesions. This woman reported that the asparagus therapy also cured her kidney disease, which had started in 1949. She had over 10 operations for kidney stones, and was receiving government disability payments for an inoperable, terminal, kidney condition. She attributes the cure of this kidney trouble entirely to the asparagus treatment.
      I was not surprised at this result as `The elements of materia medica', edited in 1854 by a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, stated that asparagus was used as a popular remedy for kidney stones. He even referred to experiments, in 1739, on the power of asparagus in dissolving stones. Note the dates! ---We would have other case histories but the medical establishment has interfered with our obtaining some of the records. I am therefore appealing to readers to spread this good news and help us to gather a large number of case histories that will overwhelm the medical skeptics about this unbelievably simple and natural remedy.
      For the treatment, asparagus should be cooked before using. Fresh or canned asparagus can be used. I have corresponded with the two leading canners of asparagus, Giant and Stokely, and I am satisfied that these brands contain no pesticides or preservatives. Place the cooked asparagus in a blender and liquefy to make a puree. Store in the refrigerator. Give the patient 4 full tablespoons twice daily, morning and evening. Patients usually show some improvement in 2-4 weeks. It can be diluted with water and used as a cold or hot drink. This suggested dosage is based on present experience, but certainly larger amounts can do no harm and may be needed in some cases.
      As a biochemist I am convinced of the old saying that `what cures can prevent.' Based on this theory, my wife and I have been using asparagus puree as a beverage with our meals. We take 2 tablespoons diluted in water to suit our taste with breakfast and with dinner. I take mine hot and my wife prefers hers cold. For years we have made it a practice to have blood surveys taken as part of our regular checkups. The last blood survey, taken by a medical doctor who specializes in the nutritional approach to health, showed substantial improvements in all categories over the last one, and we can attribute these improvements to nothing but the asparagus drink. As a biochemist, I have made an extensive study of all aspects of cancer, and all of the proposed cures. As a result, I am convinced that asparagus fits in better with the latest theories about cancer.
      Asparagus contains a good supply of protein called histones, which are believed to be active in controlling cell growth. For that reason, I believe asparagus can be said to contain a substance that I call cell growth normalizer. That accounts for its action on cancer and in acting as a general body tonic. In any event, regardless of theory, asparagus used as we suggest, is a harmless substance. The FDA cannot prevent you from using it and it may do you much good. It has been reported by the US National Cancer Institute, that asparagus is the highest tested food containing glutathione, which is considered one of the body's most potent anticarcinogens and antioxidants.
      Just a side note... In case you are wondering why this has not been made public, there is no profit in curing cancer.
