Growing Asparagus from Seed

  • My family and I really enjoy our asparagus, so we are working on establishing another raised bed to expand them into. We've done some crown splitting, but it's a lot of hassle and there is always a chance that you might damage the existing crowns or reduce the next year's harvest, so this year we are planting seeds that our original bed produced. The planting footage I took for this video is from the beginning of December last year before the ground froze, and the germination footage is from the middle of March this year.

I’m impressed to see how well these came up planting directly in the bed. I definitely want to try this! 👍🏼👍🏼🌱

Thanks for the video. I've seen people very meticulously collect the "berries" then dry them, split them, collect seeds, plant in starter trays, germinate, transplant to larger pots, then transplant to the garden... a big process. Am I seeing right that you got the berries from existing asparagus and just tossed those in the trench?

Yeah, you saw that right! You may have a better success rate with a more meticulous method, or maybe those methods would be better for sharing or selling plants to others, but we just wanted to expand our planting. I'll take my time over that work any day!

From what I can tell you just harvested the berries that had the seeds right into the ground without taking them out of their casing or doing any drying. Is that correct? I'd hate to waste time going through all that if it's not necessary. And you did this in the fall/winter?

Correct, I just put the berries straight in the ground in the fall when the plants are going dormant. We get so many berries from what's growing that I'm not too concerned with maximizing germination rates or anything like that. I'm sure there could be other methods yield more plants, but this took almost no time at all, and it was a success!
