- Asparagus is a unique vegetable in our garden, but also one of our favorites. It's different from most vegetables in that it needs a couple of years to develop from seed to harvest, but it can produce an annual yield for up to 20 years. This video shows how we started a new asparagus patch by planting seeds in containers indoors. We transplanted them in spring and then pruned them the next winter. We also noticed that the plants in full sun performed better than the ones in partial shade. Fortunately, we have a more mature asparagus patch already producing, and this video shows you how we harvest the spears.
This is literally the best asparagus video on YT. Thank you so much!
Aww, thank you so much!

You are welcome! Thank you!
This is a great share, thank you.
Working on my own asparagus from seed, building a massive raised bed area, I hope to have success like you.
You are very welcome! I'm sure you'll be successful. Asparagus is a very easy vegetable to grow.
Very helpful video!
Thank you! I'm so glad it was helpful! 😊
great video
Thank you so much!
Молодец! ❤ Садоводство удается. 💪
Спасибо! ❤️
Excellent video Dina !
Thank you so much! Does asparagus grow well in South Texas?
@@millsfamilygardening2634I have wanted to try it because it is delicious but have not tried yet.. When can it be started? Is it to ate to try now ? I have picked most of the cabbage so i will have room. And i will be making more small raised beds soon. The test with the 2 grow bags with onions, 1 trimmed and 1 not did not go well, both bags of onions are almost gone. They started to die and were like stunted so thats over with.. The rest of the onion seedlings i planted into the small raised bed and in the area where the cabbage was without trimming them. so far they look ok, I am adding fertilizer to all the new plants, And i just got some sweet banana peppers and bell peppers to sprout so i have them under the grow light. we win some and lose some, all goes to improving our chances of learning more !
@@izzysgardeninglife7948 it's not too late to start it now. You can also buy roots that will be ready to harvest next year.
@@millsfamilygardening2634Great ! I will set aside some space to try growing this year . Thank you ! 🙂
Я больше наслаждаюсь голосом чем руками😂😂😂
Спасибо большое! ❤️

I have seedlings ready to plant. Do I have to space them a foot away from each other or can I do them a little closer. I think I have too much for my area!!! lol
You can plant them a little closer. They'll be fine. 😊
Did you happen to thin these? I started a single seed per pot but wondering if I should've done several like you did here
I didn't thin them out. I think having a few seeds per pot will increase the harvest. I'm sorry I didn't mention it in the video.
👍
🙌
Will the asparagus
spread? If I plant a small patch with five plants, will the patch get larger every year?
It will be getting larger, but, in my experience, at a slow pace. In my opinion, it's a good thing because we love asparagus in my family.
Wonderful video, what zone are you in? I’m 9a Florida and am trying to find where to put our raised beds for asparagus.
Thank you! We are in North Texas zone 8a. I'd put them in full sun.
@@millsfamilygardening2634 thanks, I know Florida sun is like way more intense in some areas, and now just need the right spot. I’ve already done 240sq of raised beds and have 10 fruit trees. So my hard part, is where to I put these raised beds. lol. Really enjoyed the video, you did a great job explaining it all so well.
@@The_germinator_9a I hope you can find just the right spot for raised beds. Thank you!
Great video!! Do you have to start seeds in a tray or is it possible to direct sow them in the ground? 🤠
Thank you! They can be sown directly in the ground after the last frost passes. They need to be kept moist, obviously.
Really depends on your bugs
Great video !!! What fertilizer do you use ?
Thank you! I use organic all-purpose granular fertilizer. I believe it's by Espoma.
Thank you@@millsfamilygardening2634
You are welcome!
Does one seed produce one stalk?
It does. So, I use a few seeds per container.
But as the plant gets older, it will produce more stalks, but I still like to plant a few seeds per container.
