BookswithEmilyFox I’ve been reading The Dead Zone by Stephen King and omg so far so good although thriller and horror is not my genre, I decided to take my reading game to the next level and I have to say you inspired me to read bigger books

My reading has really slowed down because I got into World of Warcraft again so I have to force myself to take breaks, and then I try to read :,D I have just finished "Old Man's War" and it was really fun! I think you'll enjoy it once you get to it.

About “The Glass Castle”: I think you’re right that the author tries to “romanticise” things and make them sound magical, but in my view that’s just because she wrote from the perspective of herself as a child. Back then, she didn’t know of another kind of life, and she didn’t know it wasn’t a normal upbringing; she just loved her parents and wanted to follow her family everywhere. Later, when she grows up, is when she (and her siblings) realises that things are CRAZY in that family and that they have to break free as soon as possible - hence, the first chapter where Jeannette feels embarrassed about her mother. I really loved this book because it was raw and gives such an alternative but honest view on upbringing - but I can see your point as well :)

When rating memoirs I generally go by the way it is written rather than the content because it's obviously hard to rate someone's real life.

Kristin Fields why did it bother you? Do you feel it glorified her father? Did it just make you uncomfortable? I loved this memoir, but I’m starting to realize it may be because I related since I also had a dysfunctional childhood.

I just made my first Book Outlet order thanks to you! Can't wait to start diving into those. Just finished Wolves of Calla from Stephen King today. It was great, except for the fact that you know what the climax will be within the first 50 pages, and then it doesn't happen until the last 30 pages of the 700+ page book. That was frustrating, but worth it.

the glass castle is my favorite book. for me it's not a happy story through the eyes of a child. it's more about the struggles and hard challenges she had to overcome. all the empty promises and the neglect that her and her siblings faced. it's about triumph and being able to be successful even though you didn't grow up wealthy or with opportunities handed to you. it's about hard work, being yourself, and forging your own path!

I didn’t *enjoy* The Glass Castle but I felt it was impactful and an important look into her life - I cried at a lot of it, looking at my kids and thinking how I couldn’t fathom how anyone could do what her parents did, and I thought she did a good job of showing how kids think their parents are always right, but her views became more realistic and jaded, yet still she found it hard to cut ties with a toxic family, because she still loves them, which is a hard thing for victims. I thought that insight was useful. Like when you’re thinking “how did no adult step in” and you actually see how situations played out with CPS trying to get involved

Have you ever tried the Scribd service? Besides having e-books, they also have many audiobooks! Personally, I am able to find pretty much any book I want to read. The best part is that the price is very affordable, 9 dollars per month and they offer a 30-day free trial, as usual. In my humble opinion, it's way better than Kindle Unlimited or Audible.

I finished Strange Weather by Joe Hill last weekend, it was really good. I started Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill, which has a really interesting premise about a world where not only have robots taken over the human race, but now they are the inferior species to mainframes. I've just been so tired this week, I haven't made good progress in it yet.

I just finished the Wayward Pines trilogy, and while I enjoyed the pace (love a good page turner), a lot of the dialogue and writing was pretty amateur and painful, I felt, so I can only imagine how awful Run was... I'm going to read Dark Matter, though, since I've heard good things about it.

I am currently reading Conan the cimerian and Outlander although I like it a lot I feel that it's hard to read because the writing is so small (I got the one with the blue cover) maybe it's because I'm used to read in french..? I don't know but I hope it won't stop me from finishing the book!

Honestly I didn't see what the hype was about for "The Glass Castle" either. I expected to love it but just thought it was messed up and not a read I had to make myself finish because I wanted to see what happened to everyone. I liked and understood the brother more than anyone including the main character whose POV the book is based on.

Hey Emily! It’s not been the best month for my reading. I’ve picked up Thunderhead and halfway through the book I’m thinking to start over because maybe I started with too much excitement but it’s a slow read after every chapter. I don’t know if that is normal but my eyes just like give up or I’m like I’ll take a nap. I have 6 more books I picked up to read and to speed up my reading like you but I don’t know if that will happen anytime soon.

BookswithEmilyFox I thought the same thing! Some of the ideas were ones I'd heard before (from a political science/economics professor who recommended the book), but it was cool to have real data and the step by step thought processes to go along with it! I really wish it had been longer. That kind of stuff is so up my alley. :P

I had a feeling you wouldn’t enjoy Strange the Dreamer as much. I loved it because I have a soft spot for kind and besotted male characters, so the instalove didn’t bother me as it would have if he had been awful. Im reading a Patrick Ness Trilogy, book 1 - The Knife of Never Letting Go. Its a middlegrade i believe but im.really enjoying it. Have u read that "Chaos Walking" trilogy? So far it sounds like some space pioneers left the angst of planet earth, settled on "New Earth" and are already having problems like they did on earth. You know they say .... you can take em out of the earth but you cant take the earth outta them. Lmao.

The glass castle is messed up - its a compelling read for sure I finished it in like 2 days but man that is fucked up parenting. Insta love also makes me cringe I am not as romance averse as you but ffs sometimes it ruins a good book for sure! You got some exciting ones coming up! I am currently reading ms marvel volume 1 and the changeling. I suspect I will be done the graphic novel quickly and the other one is so fascinating already. I was in a serious slump so glad I am now on a roll. Also curious about the locked in your body book - can't wait to here what you think! I will tear through only human once I get it - my library has it available just placed a hold I blame you for my obsession with that series!

Oh strange the dreamer! I was actually mad at the book! It was so trophy and Lazlo was gay, the only chemistry there was in that book was between him and the alchemist. Overhyped! I loved the glass castle, I think that the fact that the reader is turned is good because it’s clear that the author can’t be objective because they are were her parents and she loves them and they loved her. It makes sense that she realized that they did terrible things, but also she fiercely loves them. That was the beauty of the book, the gray and the sense of hope.

I am in the middle of Michio Kaku's new book The Future of Humanity. Its a popular science book about....the future of humanity. Mostly just theories about how/ and where space travel is going to happen. Fun, and would make a great documentary, but I was expecting a bit more science. But it is super accessible!!
