It is not uncommon for this to occur. It is possibly an asymmetry in the bone, but more likely a static malposition of the atlas. Whether it matters functionally would have to be determined on a case by case basis.

I do not believe that I can answer that question. That would be a call that would have to be made by a surgeon. But I would wonder if it is necessary. If there is a pain pattern, perhaps it is due to this osteophyte, but it might also be blamed on the osteophyte because that is seen on X-ray, when perhaps it is due to soft tissue dysfunction. You should consult with a therapist who is experienced with clinical orthopedic soft tissue therapy. Good luck.

Hi Doctor, please answer my question, I have something called C7 transverse process elongated, and have horrible sharp pain in my neck and shoulders, the doctors told me there is no treatment for it except the medication I am taking, but the medication does not help me anything , they said there are no operation for it???

Hello. Let me start by saying that it is impossible to say anything with certainty without directly examining someone. So, having said this. First, just because there is the presence of an elongated transverse process does not necessary prove causation that it is what is causing your pain, or contributing to it. But, an elongated C7 transverse process, like a cervical rib, does have the potential to compress the brachial plexus of nerves. I am not an expert in surgery, but I would think that it is possible to resect it surgically. I would recommend consulting an orthopedic surgeon. But again, it is also possible that there are other reasons for your pain, so I would be sure to work with an excellent manual therapist / physician who might rule out other causes... I wish you well.

This is quite possibly a manifestation of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Get in touch with Kjetil Larsen of MSK Neurology, have a consult with him and read his TOS article. Hope this helps somewhat!

How big is the transverse process of C1? Can it be 3 cm?

Do you mean how “wide” is it? It can easily be more than 3 cm.

Hello Sir, It is not safe to diagnose from a distance. You need to find a therapist or physician that can assess this. Perhaps it is nothing serious, but perhaps it is an ossification that might signal something more serious. I cannot judge from a description from a client/patient. Please find a physician that can examine you. I wish you well.
